First Reading: 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14

A king tortured a Jewish family, and tried to make them violate the laws. They all refused to give in and violate the laws. All of the family members told the king they would rather die at his hands than surrender their hope of being resurrected by God.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 2:16—3:5

Paul prays that the Thessalonians will be strengthened by God. He also asks them to pray that God's word will continue to spread, despite the persecution of Christians that was occurring at that time.

Gospel: Luke 20:27-38

Jesus encountered some Sadducees who did not believe in resurrection. Jesus refuted them by quoting Moses, who called the Lord the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jesus then said. "God is not the God of the dead but of the living. All are alive for him."

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS - HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time - November 6, 2016 “May the Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.” How many greeting cards we have sent, how many more have we received. All have some kind of a wish, a message of comfort and sorrow when sickness or death occurs, or congratulations on a birth, birthday or graduation. The card means a lot, and sometimes the message is overlooked. As always we say ‘it’s the thought that counts.’ Paul’s message to his friends contains so much, we might glide past it and miss the point of the sacred scriptures. He reminds us we are loved by God, our Father, and Jesus our Brother, who offer us encouragement and hope through grace, God’s very life. The fruit of that love is found in the gift of encouragement and the strength that comes from His grace, reflected in the good we say and do. Wow! In the ‘Joy of Love’ Pope Francis inspires us to live that grace, first in our family. Where it is absent, introduce it. Where it is real celebrate it and strengthen it. Where we know it is needed bring it to others.

Dear fellow members of our parish:

Pope Francis has stated that “every person living on this planet” should become involved in discussing how we shape the future of the Earth. The Pope’s Encyclical on climate change “On Care for Our Common Home (Laudato Si’)” calls the situation urgent and invites us to join him with hope and resolve.

This Wednesday, November 9, 2016, you can accept the Pope’s invitation and lend your voice. Please join us at 7:00 PM in the OLPH School gymnasium to view a short video on the Encyclical and to participate as a panel of parishioners poses questions and issues and leads us in this discussion. We will finish by 8:30 PM.

We all are aware of our climate and its impact upon us. Climate changes are affecting all of us, regardless of whether or not we agree on the reasons for the changes.

Do we, as Catholics, have any particular responsibility to address this issue? Pope Francis thinks we do. Shouldn’t we, in St. Matthew’s - Our Lady of Perpetual Help, join him on this new path? There are simple things each of us can do.

A Letter from the Pastor

My Dear Parishioners,

On the holy day for All Saints, I did not have an evening mass scheduled for either Church. This was an enormous mistake. It was completely my fault. I am truly sorry that it happened.

Back when I was scheduling masses for that day, I looked quickly at last year’s schedule, which did not have masses scheduled for All Saints evening. What I did not see was that it was on a Sunday; so all the weekend masses covered the obligation to attend mass for the holy day.

In some of my previous parishes I cancelled the evening mass for “All Saints”. Seniors did not want to come out in the dark, and most people stayed home out of concern for damage done during mis-chief night. The result was there were so few people coming to the evening mass that it was not necessary to have it.

This is not an excuse but rather an explanation of where I was coming from.

Due to this mistake, all parishioners who missed mass as a result of the cancelled evening mass are dispensed from the obligation.

I assure you this will not happen again.

Thanksgiving Food Donations

This year in Ardsley, Our Lady of Perpetual Help will have a Mass the night before Thanksgiving, November 23 at 7:30 PM. The Little Sisters of the Poor will be there to thank parishioners for the food donations for Thanksgiving. The Little Sisters of the Poor are asking for fixings for Thanksgiving dinners (Canned Vegetables & Fruit, Canned Yams/Sweet Potatoes, Instant Mashed Potatoes, Boxed Stuffing Mix, Gravy, etc.) and also for Cereal for elders (Special K, Raisin Bran, and Non-Instant Oatmeal). Food donations may be left in the back of the Church between now and that day.

St. Mathew’s Church in Hastings On Hudson, will be collecting food donations for Thanksgiving for St. Peter’s Parish in Yonkers. Donations can be left in the back of the church and must be left by the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 20. If you wish to make a monetary donation, you may make out a check to: “St. Peter’s and St. Denis Food Pantry”, and enclose it in an envelope marked St. Peter’s. You can drop the envelope into any collection basket by November 20th.

Sometime after the holidays, Catholic Charities will sponsor a food drive to replenish our local food pantries whose shelves have been depleted as a result of the holiday demands.
