First Reading: Jeremiah 20:10-13

Because the prophet Jeremiah foretold disaster for Jerusalem, he was denounced. But Jeremiah trusted in the Lord and overcame his persecutors.

Second Reading: Romans 5:12-15

Paul explains to the Romans that Adam’s sin brought death to all, but Christ’s gift of himself brought grace and life.

Gospel: Matthew 10:26-33

In authoritative and encouraging words, Jesus urges the apostles to fear nothing — only him who can destroy the soul. Telling them “every hair of your head has been counted,” he promises that “Whoever acknowledges me before men I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.”

JUNE 25, 2017: TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 25, 2017 “But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one, many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.”… “For to you I have entrusted my cause. Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord for he has rescued the life of the poor.” We receive many gifts, and in our own day use the word ‘regift’ to pass on to someone else a gift we have received because we do not need it or like it. Some of our greatest gifts we take for granted. Consider for a moment the gift of life, of health, of family, of friends. All are important and treasured and are not for giving away. St. Paul told the Romans of the gift of Jesus, rescuing us with the gift of grace which overflows, the gift of life in abundance. Remember the floods which hit the rivers in California and Texas last winter. Remember the devastation of hurricane Matthew in Haiti last fall. The overflow was devastating. The grace of God, offering us the abundant life, has been poured out into our hearts. He sends and we receive, but like any gift we have to reach out, open our hands and hearts to receive it. Yes, Lord, to you I have entrusted my cause.

NAMING OF OUR PARISH

In “Making All Things New”, the parishioners of St. Matthew & Our Lady of Perpetual Help selected the name Holy Trinity Church. Cardinal Dolan did not accept the name due to overlap, providing three alternatives. Let the Holy Spirit inspire us to select a name reflecting the spirit of the Roman Catholic community in Ardsley and Hastings, and our vision of its future. Helpful background on each:

• St. Matthew was working as a tax collector, when Christ asked him to “Follow me”. By knowing Jesus, he was converted, leading him to use his talents on behalf of God. The Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was first venerated at the Roman church St. Matthew the

Apostle. The name St. Matthew and Our Lady of Perpetual Help recognizes that, like Matthew, we are all sinners needing the perpetual help of Our Mother.

• St. John XXIII was born into poverty in Italy, was a World War I Chaplain and, from 1935 on, as a Bishop, saved 1000s of Jews. At Vatican II's opening, on meeting with other Christian leaders, he said “We did not debate but loved one another.” As he listened and learned; his big heart grew ever bigger, as ours must do. He was the living embodiment of love toward all, benign, patient, full of goodness and mercy.

• St. John Paul II reflects the original 3 parishes. He was from Poland, representing the Polish spirit of St. Stanislaus. He had a great devotion to Our Blessed Lady, trusting in her to help him in all things, physical and spiritual. Like St. Matthew, he used his talents to follow Our Lord in a most humble and dignified way. His spirit is one of encouragement, perseverance and strength. This one Great Saint can unite the three parishes in a special way, serving as a true example of making all things new.

FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION

On July 13, 1917, Our Blessed Mother

appeared a third time to Lucia, Francisco,

and Jacinta. Lucia asked Our Lady to tell her

who she is and to perform a miracle so that

all the people would believe that she really

appears. Our Lady answered that in

October she would say who she is and what she wants and she would perform a miracle which all the

people would see so they would believe.

During this apparition, the Blessed Mother showed the children Hell, She said, “This is where the souls of

poor sinners go. To save them God wants to establish throughout the world devotion to my Immaculate

Heart. If people will do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. Sacrifice

yourselves for sinners, and say often, especially when you make some sacrifice, “O, my Jesus, it is for love of

Thee, for the conversion of sinners and in reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of

Mary that I offer this sacrifice to Thee.” “But if people will not stop offending God, He will punish the world

by means of war, hunger, persecution of the Church and of the Holy Father, to forestall this, I shall come to

ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of Reparation on the First

Saturdays.”

July 1st is the next First Saturday. Join fellow parishioners for the 8:00am Mass, followed by the Rosary, at

Our Lady of Perpetual Help in reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
