1.0 INTRODUCTION

Acceptance tes t i ng o f the High Pressure Water Jet System, wi thout a sk id mounted feed pump. was performed e a r l i e r i n the year under a separate acceptance t e s t procedure (WHC-SD-SNF-ATP/ATR-010, Rev. 0 ) . For t h i s e a r l i e r t e s t i n g the HPWJS conf igurat ion consisted o f a sk id supporting a Butterworth high pressure water pump, surge tank. e l e c t r i c a l disconnect and c o n t r o l l e r , pressure adjustment contro ls , and associated hoses.

The HPWJS supplies water a t high pressure (15.000 ps i @ 15 gpm) t o nozzles spec ia l l y designed t o clean the surfaces o f empty fue l storage canis ters . The nozzles are p a r t o f a Canister Cleaning Stat ion consist ing o f metal g i rder framework, foo t pedal manifold t o d i rec t water, associated hoses, operating contro ls , and an underwater support tab le designed t o ho ld empty fuel storage canisters during cleaning. The sk id and i t ' s attached equipment w i l l be remotely located and connected t o the canister cleaning s ta t i on by a high pressure water supply hose.

Acceptance tes t i ng o f the High Pressure Water Jet System (HPWJS) Feed Pump was performed i n the 305 Bui ld ing Cold Test F a c i l i t y on the 20th and 22nd of December, 1995. Testing was conducted f o r the Spent Nuclear Fuel group per WHC-SD-SNF-ATP-016, Rev. 0 . The fo l lowing personnel were involved i n the t e s t :

This t e s t was performed t o v e r i f y t h a t the model TE-7.5K-MD "Orb i ta l " Magnetic Dr ive Pump complied w i th acceptance c r i t e r i a defined i n Section 2.3 o f WHC-SD-SNF-ATP-016, Rev. 0. pressure i n the sk id mounted surge tank a t greater than 30 ps i f o r the durat ion o f the t e s t . whi le (2) having no visual signs o f leakage f o r the durat ion o f the t e s t .

The pump was required t o : (1) maintain

3.0 TEST METHOD AND TEST EQUIPMENT

The acceptance t e s t consisted o f s t a r t i n g up the HPWJS and ve r i f y ing proper system response p r i o r t o entering i n t o the tes t ing . E lec t r i ca l ind icat ions were as expected on the pump's con t ro l l e r . The white "Power On" l i g h t was l i t w i th power t o the con t ro l l e r . S ta r t i ng the feed pump caused the green "Run" l i g h t t o i l luminated. and shut t ing down the pump caused the l i g h t t o ext inguish.

With the i n i t i a l system operation as expected the tes t i ng began. The HPWJS was brought u t o pressure (12,000-15.000 p s i ) and each foot pedal was

3 minute increments. was observed and recorded. During t h i s time the p ip ing and feed pump were monitored f o r leaks.

Surge tank pressure was monitored using the surge tank pressure gage. P I - 100 (Standard's Lab Cal ibrat ion s t i cke r number 752-31-04-084). The l i g h t s i n question were mounted on the feed pump control s ta t ion .

4.0 TEST RESULTS

The pump's con t ro l l e r displayed the proper e l e c t r i c a l ind icat ions. Power appl ied t o the con t ro l l e r l it the white "Power On" l i g h t . When the s t a r t but ton was de ressed. the green "Run" l i g h t i l luminated. and when the pump

For a l l three nozzles operating w i th a Butterworth pump discharge pressure o f 15,000 psig. the surge tank pressure (PI-100) was 38 ps ig. This pressure remained constant throughout the t e s t .

The feed pump and i t ' s p ip ing were inspected a t the s t a r t o f the t e s t and each t ime the technician sh i f ted nozzles. A t the end o f the three minute operation o f t he hand lance (step 6.5 o f the acceptance t e s t t rave le r ) the l a s t o f t he nozzles t o be operated, a small leak, o r "weep", was noted on the union on the discharge side o f the feed pump.

Having already completed step 6.5 and recorded the data f o r step 6.6, t he Test Engineer decided t o proceed t o step 6.7. shut down the HPWJS and the feed pump and repai r the leak, then re tes t the pump f o r leaks as an "Exception".

Conduct a "pre-job briefing" of operations and procedures required to complete the test. Verify completion of Attachment A, Safety Checklist for the HPWJS. Verify nozzle, hose, and fitting configurations are established similar to the configuration that will be'delivered to the basin. Verify the March TE-7.5K-MD feed pump is mounted to the HPWJS skid with all connections, electrical and mechanical, made.

Tesl Instruction

Calibration Checks: Verify that the surge tank pressure gauge, PI-100, has valid calibration data. Start up the HPWJS per standard operating procedure and raise pressure to greater than 13,000 psi. Maintain pressure between 13,000 - 15,000 psi throughout the test.

Conduct a quick visual check of the system and indicate the appropriate responses to the questions in the NOTES column.

Run the HPWJS per the following seauence. Depress the foot pedal for the interior cleaning nozzle. Hold in this position for 3 minutes.
