Bimini Twist Break Anaylsis Actual breaking strength test results Aug 3, 2007

I consider the Bimini fundamental because it gives you a double line to work with. Clearly the strength of whatever knot you then tie increases considerably, thanks to two strands. Therefore, a great deal — often, everything — is riding on your Bimini twist. Past testing has shown that a well-tied Bimini should be just about as strong as the line itself for mono and may come close for braided lines. I wanted to see how true that is for all brands of line — and found some surprises.

Braids for which Biminis broke at more than 95 percent of the line's actual strength

• Cortland Spectron (104 percent)• Berkley FireLine (99)• PowerPro Superline (98)• Western Filament TUF-Line (98)

DiscussionThis is where I must quote The Who: I can't explain. For a number of monofilaments, it almost seemed as if somehow tying a Bimini twist had strengthened the line! The first time I saw a Bimini break at several pounds above the mean strength of the line — in Ande Premium — for example, I thought it had to be a mistake, an anomaly. But on the proverbial Bible stack, I can assure you that this happened repeatedly — not only over the five tests from knots I'd tied for this test, but subsequently. That is, still shaking my head, I quickly tied up another batch of identical Bimini twists in the Ande and tested these. The average was almost the same as the five I'd just tested. Then I did another round of three straight line-break tests to be sure I had that right. And there it was: The line alone was breaking consistently lower than the line-and-Bimini-knot sections. Ditto with several other brands.

If anyone has a reasonable explanation, I am, as they say, all ears. Meanwhile, the test did prove that a good Bimini twist should nearly always retain more than 90 percent of the monofilament's strength. And nearly half the monos offered 100 percent strength. (Recall that these are 12-turn knots; 20- or 25-turn Biminis would differ, though previous testing showed more turns to be weaker in most cases. Now, limited testing has shown a mere eight turns to be stronger still. Note also that in all but a few knots, standard deviation was very low — less than 1 percent — suggesting further that well-tied Biminis should be exceptionally reliable knots.

Bristol Knot Break Analysis Actual breaking strength test results Aug 3, 2007

The Bristol should be strong since it connects a heavy mono leader with a doubled piece of the main line. In any case, keep in mind that the Bristol only needs to be as strong as your Bimini to do its job. In that respect, testing showed that most lines perform more than adequately in providing a secure line-to-leader connection, with all but just a few coming in 100 percent or (often, considerably) more.

DiscussionThe results certainly suggest that most lines are fine for tying a Bristol knot, but a few would seem to be a poor choice for those who tie Bristol knots regularly. In fact, there may be a correlation, with some knots that performed poorly in Bristol strength also not faring well when tied with other knots. But hard/fast rules would be risky. Yet again, line testing seems to raise as many questions as answers. As noted, these tests measured seven-turn Bristol knots. Carefully read the sidebar, "Fine-Tuning the Bristol" (page 81), since it shows how things can change with more or fewer turns.

Using only four turns in monofilaments made for slightly or significantly stronger Bristol knots. For example, Spiderwire Super Mono XXX went from a mean break of 23.4 to 47.0 at the Bristol — that is, from just 82 percent of the line strength to more than 200 percent! The ranking of braided lines for Bristol knots would also change — generally increasing — for more turns. Unfortunately due to limited time, I could test only a few more monos for Bristols tied with more and fewer turns; I'd have liked to have tested all lines that way to determine the optimal number of turns, but that will have to wait for a future test.

I can point out, at least, that some lines seem to "like" the Bristol knot, and some don't. That is, some lines cinched right down when pulled as snug as possible into neat, tight loops, while with other lines, the leader loops seemed unwilling to slide together. The result was a ragged-looking knot. But how much does this matter? I had figured the tightly cinched Bristols would prove strongest, but in fact, most of the ragged-looking knots gradually pulled together into a tight package as the pressure increased, and generally broke as strongly as those that had easily cinched by hand into a compact knot. (It's certainly possible that the neat, tight Bristols might have the advantage in a situation of sudden "snapping" pressure versus a gradual pull, however.)

Keep in mind that very strong Bristol knots — such as those testing in the 130 percent range for braids and in the 170s for monofilaments — may not matter. That is, your rig will always be only as strong as its weakest knot. So, for example, while Daiwa's Saltiga Surf in 20-pound should give you a seven-turn Bristol (tied to 50-pound mono) of about 130 percent that breaks around 30 pounds, the Bimini twist just above the Bristol offers a knot of 81 percent strength that will break around 17 1/2 pounds. In this example, it doesn't matter much if the Bristol breaks at 130 percent or 90 percent. For all lines, Bristol-knot strength must also take into account the strength of the Bimini knot above it.

Palomar Knot Break Analysis Actual breaking strength test results Aug 3, 2007

Not everyone chooses to use a Bimini twist. Some anglers, for various reasons, prefer to tie their main line either directly to a hook or lure (no leader) or tie their main line to a swivel and attach a leader thereto. The palomar knot is reputed to be one of the best choices for braids (and a good mono knot) by many experts, including some of those who manufacture braided lines. But the most significant conclusion I came away with is that, for braids particularly, I'll keep using a Bimini-and-Bristol system — and that if I should need to connect my main line to a swivel, I'll first create a double line with a Bimini: That double line should make any knot I tie at the swivel far stronger.

DiscussionIn braided lines, the results for a palomar proved uniformly mediocre, breaking from the mid 40s to the low 70s. Simply put, no braid tested well with a palomar, at least for me; for you, maybe it would test differently. However, the palomar is a pretty straightforward knot. (In fact, that is reflected in the very low standard deviation among most monofilaments tied with the palomar.) On the other hand, in monofilament, the palomar showed a great range of strength, from 43 to 108 percent. If tying palomar knots is a regular part of your fishing, these results may be worth keeping in mind when you purchase line.

1) Begin by making a loop and twist the line at least 20 times.Depending on the length you wish to make the double, two people may be required.

2) Alternately, you may attach the double to something (use a cleat or a rod in a holder and place the line over the rod butt) if another pair of hands is not available. In this case stand inside the loop facing away from the rod, and towards the knot. Be careful of line damage at the end of the double if you do use this method.

This example shows a short double being made. The double end can be placed around the knee or your foot for a double a bit longer. Apply steady tension so the twists come together. Ensure that tension is maintained at all times.3) Keeping tension on the standing end (line to the reel), relax slightly the tag end and let it run down over the original twist. This process can be assisted by placing a finger in the "v" at the bottom of the twist.

4) When the twists are completely wrapped, make a half-hitch around the right leg of the loop and pull tight. This will prevent the knot unraveling temporarily and allow you to proceed to the next step.

  5) Complete the knot with a four turn locking hitch around both strands of the loop. Moisten the line with saliva and pull the tag end slowly. Use you thumb and forefinger to draw back the turns as you tighten them. Trim the tag end but leave enough line so the knot doesn't unravel, which may (unlikely if tied correctly) happen if it is constantly moving in and out of rod guides. The unraveling can

be prevented by applying super glue to the knot. A rubber type glue such as Aquaseal or Pliobond is also very useful.

Always remember to test all knots before fishing

The No-Name or Bristol Knot

as it's known to some, is a very easy and strong knot to tie when you need to join a doubled line to a single line such as in the diagram above where we show a Bimini Twist and it's resulting double line loop being joined to a heavier duty shock leader. When properly tied, this combination as well as a

Double Uni Knot to a Bimini make for a 100% strength knot combination that's as strong or stronger than the main running line.

1. Run the shock leader up through the Bimini loop about 10". 2. With your index finger and thumb, pinch the leader and the end of the loop and then wrap

the leader five to seven times around the doubled line. 3. Run the tag of the leader back between the leader and the double lines leaving about 4-5"

of leader tag extending from the loop. In our variation please note the leader does not pass back through the doubled line loop itself but instead passes under the leader and above the double lines of the loop. We have found this to be a much better way to finish off this fine

knot. 4. Cinch the knot down tight by moistening and pulling both the leader and the single line

portion of the running line. Do not pull on the tag end! When properly tied, the leader tag will protrude at a perfect 90 angle to the knot as shown and both lines of the loop will be

the exact same length. Trim the tag end close.

NOTE: unlike the Double Uni/Bimini, when using the No-Name/Bristol to connect leader to running line, you must tie the Bimini to the finished length you want the double line loop to be at the time you tie the Bimini. Most prefer that length to be less than one full wrap around the spool of your reel so the two knots don't get caught on each other. With the Double Uni, if you tie the leader around the double line first, you can adjust the length of the doubled line by sliding that first Uni back up to the Bimini and then tying the double line Uni around the

leader.
