Teaching reading:

- phonics (letters and sounds, differentiated groups each day);- shared reading (during all lessons);- guided reading (once a week);- additional 1:1 reads whenever possible;- 1 discrete SPAG lesson each week + throughout all lessons.

At Home

What you can do to support your child at home:- focus on letter sounds and names;- focus on high frequency words;- ask lots of questions when reading with your child to develop comprehension skills;- choose books that are interesting to your child (a range of genres e.g. non-fiction, fiction, poetry etc.);- set a routine for reading - for them to read to you and for you to read to them;- reading games - matching words, finding words, pairs game;- library visits

REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader.

Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to:

- sound out- re-read to check it makes sense- use pictures for clues- ask questions about the book- and most importantly ENJOY READING!
