Weekly learning-feeding program to motivate interest to learn and consequently raise liteacy of young Payataschildren continues in earnest

PP Linda Palattao and PP Beth Sy of RC Holy Spirit observed young children from poor families in the Payatas area as they learn re

ing and arts skills last Saturday, August 4. The kids sing and play games and are served food, too, as part of the weekly learnin

feeding sessions sponsored by PP Linda. The activities are held at the campus of Elite Business, Science and Technology Sch

owned by the Palattao family. There are up to forty beneficiary children in most sessions. The kids are tutored by volunteer stude

from the school and from the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit.

RC Holy Spirit and partner schools re-affirm their already on-going cooperation durin

literacy summit organized by the district

President Marcia Salvador re-affirmed to continue the clubs

long-standing cooperation with Holy Spirit National High

School through school principal Mrs Zaida Padullo, and Dona

Juana Elementary School through principal Dr EmelyPelobello, during the literacy summit event last Aug 4, 2012.

At the same event, President Marcia and the principal of Holy

Spirit Elementary School also agreed to begin cooperative

    relationship with a 120-day milk-feeding program for 100

malnourished first graders of the school.

At the club meeting last Aug 9th, it was clarified that the

adoption agreements with the schools shall not be consid-

ered as mutually exclusive. The schools shall continue receiv-

ing assistance from other organizations and even from other

clubs for the schools maximum benefit, while RCHS may also

continue to help other schools as its resources permit.

On August 10, 2012, RC Holy Spirit turned over bundles of assort

clothes, blankets, noodles and biscuits to Caritas Novaliches for d

tribution by the Holy Trinity Parish Church which still counted 3,5

evacuees being served as of that day.

The Caritas organization is the social services arm of the Diocese

Novaliches where Holy Spirit Rtn Engr. Angel Castro (at center in t

photo) is an active leader. Received by Mr Ernesto Taeza Jr ofCtas Novaliches, the donations came from Holy Spirit PE Dr Bong,

Linda Palattao, PP Beth Sy, Treasurer Peth Rivera, and Rtn Da

    Kim.

    Dear fellow Rotarians,

    What is Rotary?

    When I ask Rotarians

    this question, they

    often give vague an-

    swers. And when I

    asked myself this

    question, I had to

    think about it. August

    is Membership and

    Extension Month in

    Rotary, and I want all

Rotarians to be able to send a unifiedmessage about what Rotary is and why

    they joined.

The key to increasing membership is for

every Rotarian to be convinced that its

good to be a Rotarian, and to convey that

passion to others. In Rotary, we have a

tendency to be humble and keep our

achievements to ourselves. But we must

share them with those around us and with

    the world.

Every Rotarian has a specific moment that

stands out and has a special meaning.

Some people refer to this as their Rotary

Moment. I believe it is very important to

share this moment with others. Facts and

numbers can only go so far, but sharing a

personal experience can open doors and

    build friendships.

Thats why I decided to create some sam-

ple messages that I call Rotary Mo-

ments. You can use these one-minute

and three-minute messages to answer the

question What is Rotary? in a way that is

most personal to you. They will help you

talk about the projects youve been in-

volved in, how theyve helped your com-

munity, and whats been most meaningful

    to you.

To strengthen Rotary, we need more mem-

bers. But unless those members are con-

vinced of the benefits of the organization

and can share that passion with others,

    expanding Rotary wont be meaningful.

If every Rotarian is happy about being a

Rotarian and spreads the word with a

clear, unified message if every Rotaria

around the world can be his or her own P

    department the combined, collectiv

effect will be enormous. These samp

messages will help us all clearly commun

cate our enthusiasm to others. This w

lead to an increase in new membersh

    and in member retention.

The messages are available for fre

    download at www.rotary.org, and Rota

ans can buy other membership materia

    at shop.rotary.org.

I believe that the purpose of every life is t

help others and contribute to societ

Once Rotarians begin using these sam

ples, the world will become more aware o

how Rotary is helping people live that wa

I encourage you to share your Rotary M

ment with other Rotarians as well as no

    Rotarians.

The Object of RotaryFirst formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and

foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in par-

    ticular, to encourage and foster:

. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for ser-

    vice;

. High ethical standards in business and professions, the

recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the digni-

    fying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's per-

    sonal, business, and community life;

. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,

and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional

persons united in the ideal of service.

5 Avenues of ServiceBased on the Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotarysphilosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity isbased:

focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the

    effective functioning of the club.

encourages Rotarians to serve others through their

vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

covers the projects and activities the club under-

takes to improve life in its community.

encompasses actions taken to expand Rotarys

humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world under-

    standing & peace.

    recognizes the positive change imple-

mented by youth and young adults through leadership development

activities, service projects, and exchange programs.

The Four-Way TestOf the things we think, say or do

    I am a Rotarian

I will always uphold the TRUTH.

    I am a Rotarian

I will always strive to be FAIR

in all of my dealings with my fellowmen.

I will always seek to promote

    the greatest good

for the greatest number of people

in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE.

    I am a Rotarian

    I will always uphold

    the Rotary International Motto,

    SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

    Principles that Guide Rotary

    As a Rotarian, I will

    1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

    2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

    3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to othe

    4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

    5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

    6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the q

ity of life in my community

    7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rota

    ans

    8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship
