Youth learn HIV/AIDS & drug abuse and how to preven

Some 75 Rotaractors and Interactors attended the seminar on HIV/AIDS and Drug AbusePrevention held at the Quezon City Red Cross Building last Sunday, September 25, 2011.

Ms Janice Melody Adolfo, RN, Head of the QCRC Community Health, spoke before Rota-ractors on HIV/AIDS prevention. In a concurrent session, the Interactors listened to Mes-dames Lilybeth Selda and Maria Carmen Chua of the Quezon City Anti-Drug Council speakon Drug Abuse and its consequences. As President Ped Condeno mentioned in his wel-

come remarks, the seminar is very timely since recent data showed that for the past eightyears, while most countries reported a steady decrease in HIV/AIDS infection, the Philip-pines and six other countries have reported an upward trend, increasing by more than800% in less than a decade.

In her closing remarks, Ms Annie D Torres, RN, Administrator of the QC Red Cross urged the young participants to share what they learned during the seminar with their relativesand friends.

The inter-city meeting was organized by RC Holy Spirit in cooperation with the Quezon CityRed Cross. Co-hosting the event were RC Biak na Bato, RC Commonwealth, RC Green-meadows, RC Metro Diliman, RC New Manila East, RC Pag-asa QC, RC San Francisco delMonte and RC Timog. It was made possible through the efforts of the officers and mem-

bers of the Interact and Rotaract Clubs of Holy Spirit, under the guidance of Sec JR DelgraChair of RCHS New Generations Committee.

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,

We have a color for the 2011-12 Rotary year, and that color is green. Why green? Because green is thecolor of spring, of new life, of bright leaves bursting forth from spreading branches. And there is nodoubt that it is time to green Rotary to lift our

deepening pallor of gray and replace it with brighter shades of green.

Overall, in Rotary, only 11 percent of our members are under theage of 40, while 68 percent are over 50 and 39 percent are over60. Its not too hard to see where this will lead us in 10, 20, and30 years down the line, if we dont do something about it now. Its not enough to simply bring in new members. We need to bring n younger members, who will breathe new life and new vigor into

our organization.

How can we be more attractive to younger members, who are sodifferent in so many ways from the young professionals of a gen-

eration or two ago? We have to come to them where they are and for most young people, where they are is on the Internet, onFacebook, on Twitter and e-mail, and on their smartphones. Aclub that doesnt have a presence on the Internet simply doesntexist as far as they are concerned. A clubs website is its publicace and it has to be a good one.

More than anything, I believe we need to bring back the idea of he family of Rotary. We need to look at all of Rotary as one fam-ly: Rotarians, their families, and also Rotaractors, Interactors,

Youth Exchange students and alumni, Foundation alumni, and soon. And we need to consider retention as an idea that applies notust to Rotarians, but to the entire family of Rotary.

Too often, we look outward to find new members, and we do notsee our own young generation, waiting to be called upon. Wemust look to them to find the capable and enthusiastic new mem-bers who will be the club presidents, the district governors, andhe RI senior leaders of tomorrow.

We owe it to our Rotary family past, present, and future tomake sure that our generation of Rotarians is not the last. Wemust, in a very real sense, reach within to embrace our Rotaryamily, so that we can better embrace all of humanity.
