Great BritainLast year, District 1120 (England) launched a purple crocusfundraiser, selling 25,000 fabric flowers and raisingUS$40,000 for PolioPlus. This year, Rotary clubs in the

United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Nigeria aim toraise $250,000. As of March, they had already sold160,000 flowers. In the style of Remembrance Day poppies,the fabric flowers are designed to be worn on the lapel as asymbol of support for the fight against polio; crocuses werechosen because their purple color matches the dye used tomark the pinkie fingers of immunized children.

GuyanaEvery year, the Rotary Club of Georgetown hosts a dinner inhonor of World Understanding Month. In February, formerprime minister of Jamaica Percival James Patterson spokeabout the future of the Caribbean economic integrationmovement and the importance of the Caribbean Community(CARICOM) in promoting world understanding. CARICOM,headquartered in the Guyanese capital, promotes economiccoordination and cooperation among member states.GhanaMembers of the Rotaract Club of Ho spent time with resi-dents of a village for people with Hansens disease, alsoknown as leprosy, in the Volta region in February. Althoughthe disease is treatable today, those who have been curedstill face a stigma in many places. The Rotaractors broughtrice, cooking oil, frozen foods, toiletries, and used clothing

worth more than US$1,500 to the 80 villagers and theirfamilies. The club also plans to raise funds for improve-ments including painting, door lock and hinge repairs, mos-quito net replacement, and septic tank maintenance.

KoreaRotarians from District 3630 hosted a walkathon in Febru-ary, raising about US$18,000 for PolioPlus. Koreans arealso fighting polio in the digital realm: As of press time, theyhad uploaded 1,338 photos of people making the ThisClose gesture to the End Polio Now Worlds Biggest Com-mercial project, second only to the United States and out-

pacing third-place Brazil.

Timor-LesteFor more than a decade, the Rotary clubs of Dili the club in the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Real, Portugal, have worked together to foster the devement of Timorese youth through vocational and educaprograms. The clubs have funded repairs for local primschools, sponsored scholarships, and supported Movimede Adolescentes e Crianas, a nonprofit that runs a centDili offering after-school programs. Today, the Dili club vides funding for the center through District 9550, walso covers parts of Australia.

RC Holy Spirit has completed numerous service projects such as medical-dental relief missions, dis

aster-relief & hunger alleviation projects, literacy projects, youth development initiatives, program

and parties to bring cheers to less fortunate children, water sanitation and disease prevention, an

other projects that have already touched lives of well over 5.000 since July 2012.

Eleven (11) medical/dental/oriental health care missions between July 18, 2012 and March 24, 2013that have served almost 2,900 patients from less fortunate families. These include the large-scale 1400-patients mission held in partnership with SM Foundation last February 9, 2013 in observance by Rotarians,

Last October 9 RCHS cooperated with Korean International Food for the Hungry International in distrib-uting food & household packs for 500 indigent families in Payatas with Bgy Chair Rose Dadulo and

barangaycouncil providing the venue. Each pack was worth about P500.

Water and sanitation project for 4,500 students Supported by TRF through District Simplified Grant RCHoly Spirit rehabilitated and improved the heretofore non-operational washing facility intended to insurecleanliness and protect health of 4,500 students of Holy Spirit National High School. Project started on Nov

7 and completed on Nov 12.

RC Holy Spirit and the Rotaract and Interact Clubs of Holy Spirit organized the 2nd Youth Forum on AntiDrug Abuse and HIV/AIDS Prevention to achieve ZERO new incidence , attended by 70 Rotaractors andInteractors and 17 Rotarians. Co-host clubs who shared with us the goal of ZERO new incidence were Ro-

tary Clubs of Camp Aguinaldo, Loyola Heights, New Manila East, Pag-asa QC, SFDM and Timog.

Nine (9) events for spreading goodwill & joy such as gift-giving & parties, including July 1 new Rotary yearparty for kids and 8 Christmas related initiatives which reached about 1,000 beneficiaries.

To help build peace and international understanding , RC Holy Spirit and PE Dr Bong hosted the educa-tional-cultural visit of eleven (11) Korean college students last July 16-20, 2012. Club also served as voca-

tional day host to inbound Group Study Exchange team from Northern England & Isle of Man in March.

Alternative Learning System being implemented by Sec JR Delgra and ALS of QC sponsored byRCHS and club members. Purpose is to help out-of-school persons to obtain high-school certifica-tion from the Department of Education. Sessions are held for 3 hours every Saturday over a 10-month period in three locations. Last May 19, 2013, seventeen graduated from the ALS and re-ceived their diplomas after passing the certification examinations of the Department of Educa-

tion. This was the 2nd batch of graduates for the ALS program of Holy Spirit.

Weekly reading & arts program with feeding for 40 pre-school youths in Payatas, sponsored by PP LindaPalattao with support from Rotarians. The kids are tutored by volunteer students from the Elite School.

Weekly mentoring by Interactors for their schoolmates who are having difficulty in certain school subjectslike math and science; objective is to help them improve their school performance and grades.

Milk-feeding & nutrition program. Sixty severely malnourished Grade I pupils gained 354.8 kgs, or aver-age of 5.9 kgs each child, after 80-day milk-feeding & nutrition program of RC Holy Spirit from November

2012 to March 2013, at Dona Juana Elementary School.

Holy Spirit SMILES Project launched last August 14, 2012 for 16-month old baby who was given freecleft lip operation, medicines and hospital services. The second beneficiary is currently in the process of

medical assessment for readiness to undergo the procedure.

Holy Spirit WHEELS OF HOPE Projectrolled out last September 25, 2012 with the turn-over of wheelchairto a paralyzed breadwinner. The second new wheelchair was turned over to another stroke victim lastOctober 16. In both cases, the Project spread hope and happiness among the beneficiaries and their

families.
