Holy Spirit inducts two returning Rotarians as

new members during fellowship night

This issue of THE DOVE, an electronic bulletin, consists of 11 on-screen pages.

SEPTEMBER is Youth

Service Month

August 26, 2014 was a special night for RC Holy Spirit. It was not one of those once-a-month fellowship nights. A break in the fellowship event featured the induction rites for two (2) new members, namely Caro-line “Carol” Barcinal and Armelia “Ammie” Bagain. Carol is Branch Manager of Security Bank & Trust Company Don Antonio Heights Branch, and was sponsored by Treasurer Percy Zabala. Sponsored by PP Linda Palattao, Ammie is a licensed Electrical Engineer and had served as Hands On President be-fore she resigned from Rotary. The new members were “charged” by DGN Dwight Ramos who exhorted them, being former Rotarians, to commit their time, talent and treas-ure to service above self. They were then inducted as new mem-bers of RCHS by IPDG Francis Rivera.

The fellowship night was made dou-bly special because of the presence of our youth partners-in-service, the Rotaractors and Interactors, who showed their talent in singing, along-side with Rotarians CP Nides, PP Chin Chin, Percy and JR. The fun continued well into the night, with overflowing food and drinks.

RC Loyola Heights and RC Holy Spirit jointly host successful 2014

Club Administration and Secretaries & Treasurers Training Seminars

Just a few days before the CATS and SATTS 2014, the organ-izers were having frayed nerves, wondering whether the twin seminars could muster the target of 150 attendees. To their delight, the venue at Celebrity Sports Club was filled to the brim on the day of the CATS and SATTS on August 30, 2014. About 160 Rotarians from 60 Rotary clubs attended the district-mandated Club Administration Training Seminar (CATS) and Secretaries and Treasurers Training Seminar (SATTS), organ-ized by the District Club Administration Committee with support from The Rotary Academy. The big turn-out of attendees was largely due to personal campaigns made by BCP Marites Ne-pomuceno, PP Marcia Salvador, and BCP Paul Galang of RC Loyola Heights, host of CATS. SATTS was hosted by RC Holy Spirit.

The difficult job of manning the registration desk was handled by Holy Spirit Rotarians with the assistance of Rotaractors. As early as 12 noon, PP Marcia Salvador, SATTS Chair, was at the venue with Rotaractors Kevin Laragan, Alyssa Lincuna and Alvin Giray. Soon after, BCP Marites Nepomuceno came, as did PP Beth Sy and Rtn Jerry Sy. Holy Spirit Rotarians and Rotaractors then grappled with the hordes of attendees that came almost all at the same time. PE Angel Castro also came to assist before joining the training sessions. Treasurer Percy Zabala also attended the sessions. IPP Dr Bong was also on hand. Meanwhile, Admin Chair Ric Salvador was a speaker and resource person during the CATS break-out session speaking on Club Bulletin as Medium of Communication and as Club Archive.

Keynote speaker PDG Jimmy Cura of RID 3830 spoke on “Being the BEST Club” and cited best practices on club admini-stration mainly from his own club, the Rotary Club of Rizal West.

PDG Penny Policarpio, Dean of Rotary Academy, gave an overview of the CATS and SATTS and what the attendees could expect during the sessions. He finished his talk with this challenge: “If we are going to be the best, it‟s up to me.”

DICO CP Winston Sia expounded on On-line Resources and Tools available for Rotarians. He urged everyone to take ad-vantage of the wealth of information readily available in the Dis-trict 3780 website and the RI website. He reminded all that Member Access is now known as MY ROTARY.

Break-out sessions followed. For CATS, the following topics were taken up: Basic Protocol & Sergeant-at-Arms Duties by PP Ed Ferriols; Club Bulletin as Medium of Communication and as Club Archive by DGR-PRM Ric Salvador; Effective Club Ad-ministration by DGN Dwight Ramos. Over at the SATTS, the following were discussed: Roles & Responsibilities, Account-ability by DDG Chito Borromeo; Fund Sourcing, Financial Stew-ardship by PDG Danny Fausto; District/RI Reporting Require-ments, District Awards by DCOS Jesse Tanchanco.

Thanks to our Rotaractors who ably assisted not only in the registration desk but also as technical support to speakers dur-ing the break-out sessions!

Four Rotaractors of Holy Spirit attend Rotaract District Training As-

sembly to enhance their leadership skills

RC Holy Spirit sponsored the participation of four (4) officers of the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit to the Rotaract District Assembly held on August 30, 2014 at the Silver Hall of the Rotary Center. The full-day assembly had for its theme “Light Up Towards 30”. Attended by eighteen (18) Rota-ract clubs in the district, it was hosted by the Ro-taract Club of Cubao. Guest speaker was Ms Amelia “Amy” Pagdan-gan, President of STI Colleges, who spoke on Leadership and Personality. Break-out sessions had the following interesting topics: Leadership: Decision-making; Youths From All Walks of Life; Life-changing Projects. A new experience for the attending Rotaractors was the boodle fight for lunch where everybody enjoyed eating with their bare hands. Representing the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit were President Harold Kim Maggay, Vice Presi-dent Kier Berce, Treasurer Renziel Candelario and Public Relations Chair Mikhaela Palmiano. They thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience and bonding with fellow Rotaractors.

One of the great privileges of being president of Rotary International is hav-ing the chance to visit so many parts of the Rotary world. Usually I travel to par-ticipate in Rotary events; speak at Ro-tary clubs, conferences, and institutes; and encourage Rotarians in their ser-vice. But as president, I am responsible for all branches of the Rotary family.

This means that it is also my privilege to support the service of Rotary's youngest generations: our Rotaractors, Interactors, Rotary Youth Exchange students, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards participants.

When I see the work Rotarians do, I am always impressed, always excited, and always inspired. When I see the work of our New Generations, I am all of this – and frequently I am surprised as well. Not by the quality of their work – for I have learned to expect great things from them – but by the creativity and ingenuity of their thinking. I look at what they have done and think not just "What a great job!" but "What a great idea!" Because every generation sees the world in a unique way, and every individual has a unique point of view. Faced with the same problems, we arrive at different solutions. This is why, in Rotary, our diversity – of culture, language, expertise, gender, and age – is our strength.

In Rotary, we try to take the long view in our service. We aspire to serve in ways that will make a lasting difference, that will continue to have an impact after our participation ends. Our younger generations, in my experience, share this sentiment, and apply it globally, by focusing on envi-ronmental issues in new and innovative ways. When I be-came a Rotarian, environmental issues were barely on our radar. To young people today, these concerns are front and center. Their perspective is a valuable contribution to the world of Rotary service, and it is one that we should all encourage and support. Just as they are learning from us, so should we be learning from them.

The young people who are serving in Rotaract and Inter-act, and participating in Youth Exchange and RYLA today, are the Rotarians of tomorrow. When we support them, we are supporting the future of our entire organization. We are helping to train the men and women who will be the club presidents, district governors, RI directors, and RI presi-dents of tomorrow.

RI President’s September Message Foundation Chairman’s September Message

Help us reach our goal.

Rotarians are generous people. They give to many good, charitable causes in their communities but in many instances do not support their own charity: The Rotary Foundation. This Rotary year, I would like to see every Rotary club make a contribution to our Rotary Foundation.

Remember that the good we do in the world is limited only by the contributions we receive. And when we give to our Foundation, we are not sending cash to Evanston – we are helping a blind man to see, a polio victim to walk, a child to grow to adulthood healthily, a student to become better educated, and a family to have food to eat.

Each year, the trustees of The Rotary Foundation set a goal for the Annual Fund – the fund that feeds the World Fund. This year, the goal is US$123 million, with each Rotarian being asked to contribute a minimum of $100. I am conscious that this figure would mean more in some countries than others. But Rotarians should give accord-ing to their means.

The slogan Every Rotarian, Every Year means exactly that. Every Rotarian should make a contribution to our Foundation every year. Make it a priority this year to im-press on your club the importance of every club support-ing our Foundation in some way.

As I said at the outset, Rotarians are generous people. I am sure you will translate that generosity into giving to our Rotary Foundation.

It is up to each and every one of us to do so.

John Kenny

Foundation Trustee Chair

Messages from Rotary International

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to ad-vance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improve-

ment of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

The Rotary Foundation helps fund our hu-manitarian activities, from local service pro-jects to global initiatives. Your club or district can apply for grants from the Foundation to invest in projects and provide scholarships. The Foundation also leads the charge on worldwide Rotary campaigns such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Rotarians and friends of Rotary support the Foundation’s work through volun-

tary contributions.

The Object of Rotary First formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and

foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in par-

ticular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for ser-

vice;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the

recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the digni-

fying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's per-

sonal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,

and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional

persons united in the ideal of service.

5 Avenues of Service Based on Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotary‟s phi-losophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the

effective functioning of the club.

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their

vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club under-

takes to improve life in its community.

International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s

humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world under-

standing & peace.

Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth

and young adults through leadership development activities, service

projects, and exchange programs.

The Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Principles that Guide Rotary

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my

community

7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

3. A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Ahmal.” The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiv-ing the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes that she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They‟re twins! If you‟ve seen Juan, you‟ve seen Ahmal.”

4. A dyslexic man walks into a bra.

5. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm and says: “A beer please and one for the road.”

7. “Doc, I can‟t stop singing „The Green, Green Grass of Home.‟” “That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome.” “Is it common?” Well, “Its Not Unusual.”

8. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, “I was arti-ficially inseminated this morning.” “I don‟t believe you,” says Dolly. “Its true, no bull!” exclaims Daisy.

9. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at ei-ther.

10. Deja Moo: The feeling that you‟ve heard this bull before.

11. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn‟t find any.

12. A man woke up in a hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, “Doctor, doctor I can‟t feel my legs!” The doctor replied, “I know you can‟t I‟ve cut off your arms!”

14. What do you call a fish without eyes? A fsh.

15.Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says, Dam.

16. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit up a fire in the craft. Unsur-prisingly it sank, proving once again that you can‟t have your kayak and heat it too.

17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. “But why,” they asked, as they moved on. “Because,” he said, “I can‟t stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer.”

18. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was salted.

19. And finally, there was the person who sent twenty different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least ten of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did!!!!!!
