Identity & Access Management

Identity management, also known as identity and access

management, is a framework of policies and technologies for

ensuring that the proper people in an enterprise have the

appropriate access to technology resources. IdM / IAM systems

fall under the overarching umbrellas of IT security and data

management. Identity and access management systems not

only identify, authenticate, and authorize individuals who will be

utilizing IT resources, but also the hardware and applications

employees need to access.

DESCRIPTION: RAYCHEM Pipeline Supervisor (RPS)

incorporates Identity & Access Management (IAM) to ensure

that the right individuals access the right resources at the right

times for the right reasons.

DTS System Overview

RAYCHEM Pipeline Supervisor (RPS) relies on detailed temperature measurements along the entire length of the pipeline in order to perform

pipeline condition assessment. The temperature measurements are provided by a Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system, which uses a

specialty optical fiber as the transducer. The optical fiber is installed in contact with the pipeline for the entire monitored length and provides

temperature measurements better than 1 C precision for every meter of the pipeline.

The DTS instrument sends light pulses down the fiber and measures temperature by analyzing the scattering pattern of the pulses.

DTS provides a temperature profile within 1°C for every meter

of the pipeline asset

Dashboards

RAYCHEM Pipeline Supervisor provides several

dashboards, each designed to provide the most useful and

relevant information for a particular task. The Dashboards

are accessed using the Dashboard menu at the left end of

menu bar. The Dashboards available are:

• Operator Dashboard

• Analyst Dashboard

• Pipeline Summary View

Page 6: RAYCHEM Pipeline Supervisor V1

6

Pipeline Summary View

RAYCHEM Pipeline Supervisor provides monitoring of multiple

pipelines within a single software solution¹. The Pipeline

Summary View provides an enlarged overview of the current

condition of all configured pipelines. Each of the pipelines

includes a Risk gauge to its left, which indicates the overall risk

assessment for that pipeline.

¹ Each pipeline asset will require a separate license and

commissioning process to view.

7

Overall Pipeline Risk Assessment

The Pipeline Risk Gauge is a composite indication of the current overall risk of the pipeline. This gauge takes into account all of the alarms

present along the pipeline, applying weighting factors for each different type of alarm, the number of alarms of each type, and the magnitude of

the alarm condition for each alarm.

The Risk Gauge algorithm uses a point system to determine overall risk. The points are then mapped onto a risk scale from low to high, where

high risk means the pipeline has substantial issues that are affecting its functionality or safety. The ranges in the Risk Gauge are:

• LOW (green) – Your pipeline is mostly healthy

• MEDIUM (yellow) - Your pipeline needs attention

• HIGH (red) – Your pipeline is at some risk

The scale is configurable by someone with the Commissioner role to adjust weightings per your operating philosophy. See the example below.

Analyst Dashboard

In the Analyst Dashboard, spatial graphs of

the parameters for the entire pipeline are

shown, along with time trends for a

selected location along the pipeline. The

graphs can be zoomed and panned in

order to see details for specific pipeline

sections or times.

Any of the available monitoring parameters

in RPS can be viewed in the Analyst

Dashboard, including the Fiber Attenuation.

Alarm Management

Progression of Pipeline StateOver time, the state of the pipeline will change in response to flow, ambient conditions, heater performance and

thermal insulation health. As the state changes, various alarm conditions may occur. RAYCHEM Pipeline

Supervisor provides detection and alarming of the following conditions:

• Temperature above high alarm setpoint (hot spot)

• Temperature below low alarm setpoint (cold spot)

• Time To Freeze prediction

• Freezing Imminent

• Frozen

Alarm AggregationAlarm events are triggered on a meter-by-meter basis whenever the state of the pipeline changes. For some

periods of pipeline operation, this could result in thousands of alarms being generated, overwhelming plant

operators. To avoid this, when pipe adjacent to an existing alarm also enters the same alarm condition, its alarm

is merged with the existing alarm, in order to reduce the total number of alarms that may be generated in certain

conditions.

For example, if the pipeline cools below the low temperature alarm setpoint at 100m, an alarm will be triggered at

100m. If meter 101 then cools below the alarm setpoint, rather than triggering a 2nd alarm event at 101m,

RAYCHEM Pipeline Supervisor merges the new alarm with the adjacent one at 100m, updating the existing alarm

event.

14

Alarm ManagementThe details of all alarms that have occurred on the RPS system can be

viewed in the Alarms list, accessible using the Manage Alarms menu in

the menu bar. The Alarms list allows filtering by plant, pipeline, alarm

category (Warning, Alarm or Emergency), alarm type (hot spot, cold spot,

or any of the other alarm types), or alarm status (Raised, Acknowledged

or Addressed). The list can also be sorted by either time or alarm priority.

When an alarm is Acknowledged, it remains active until it is Addressed. If

the condition that caused the alarm still exists, or occurs again, after it is

Addressed, a new alarm event will be created.

Alarm Types (v1.0 Basic license)

❖Hot Spot (temperature is above high alarm setpoint)

❖Cold Spot (temperature is below low alarm setpoint)

❖Fiber Health (DTS or sensor fiber system problems)

❖Bad Data (indicates a potential configuration problem

with the DTS or RPS)
