Over the last three decades, engi-neers in utilities and industry aroundthe world have specified of millionsRaychem cable terminations atdistribution voltages up to 36 kV.Raychem terminations have be-come identified with reliability be-cause of their unparalleled long-term performance where it reallycounts in the field. Today there aremany changes influencing the distrib-ution of power at medium voltages. For example, the transition to newtypes of polymeric cable, distributionat higher voltages, and the wide-spread usage of compact switchgear.
Anticipating these industry changes,we have continued to extend andimprove the product range, based onthe extensive experiece both in thefield and at our outdoor test sites incoastal, polluted and desert environ-ments. Now these developments areincorporated in a new generation ofRaychem heat-shrinkable cable termi-nations, that are even easier to selectand install, without compromisingthe reliability of proven materialstechnology. The improved system issimpler to use, because the basic ter-mination components and installationsteps are the same even if your net-work operates with voltages of 7.2 to36 kV; if you use 12 kV belted papercable and 24 kV water-blocked singlecore polymeric cable; whether youmake equipment connections in acable box or in compact switchgear.Lets review the main advantages ofthe improved system:
Universal Selection Procedure Simplifield selection table allows
quick selection based on conductorcross section and voltage class foreither polymeric or MIND paperinsulated cables (For MI draining oilcables, contact your local represen-tative)
Simple modification codes permiteasy specification of optional accessory kits
Enhanced range-taking abilitymeans that one kit fits more con-ductor sizes, reducing stockingrequirements
Unlimited shelf life allows stockingof economic quantities withoutproduct spoilage
Simplifield Cable Preparation Improved treatment of screen cut
back is compatible with all modernscreen removal techniques
No tapering of insulation required No polishing of polymeric insulation
surface No special preparation of sectored,
or eccentric conductors, or of cablethat is curved after unreeling fromthe cable drum
Cable preparation steps are similarto those for Raychem joints
Simplified Installation Components are lightweight and
non-shattering Clear instruction sheets Common installation procedure for
polymeric and MIND paper cables Factory engineered kit permits rapid
on-site installation No mechanical stress at insulation
screen cutback Termination accommodates same
bending radius as cable Visual confirmation of correct
assembly sequence possible afterinstallation
Rain skirts can be installed to alloweither top or bottom feed
No soldering of earthing accessoriesrequired
Outstanding Long-Term Reliability Fully sealed against water ingress
from the environment or from withinthe conductor strands
Polymeric materials load cycle withthe cable without mechanically stressing termination components and sealants
Unsurpassed performance in polluted environments, proven over three decades.
Raychem Cuxhaven, West Germany,long-term test site. Raychem termina-tions have been on test at this NorthSea coast location for over twodecades.

All our indoor terminations for poly-meric or paper insulated cables can be used with RICS (RaychemInsulated Connection System). The RICS, fully insulated, right-angleand straight adaptors make it easy toconnect any type of cable to moderncompact electrical equipment. A special RICS, accommodating aZnO Surge Arrester is now availableas well as a low profile, one piececable termination (IXSU), designedspecifically for applications with verylimited clearances between phases.
We have the universal jointing system for all types of paper andpolymeric cable up to 36 kV. Thesame system allows transition jointsbetween different tree-core papercable and transitions from paper topolymeric cables. Trifurcations withany combination of cables are alsoeasy with the Raychem jointing system.
