Features and benefits

Reliable, field-proven performanceIndependent testing and field experience have repeatedly proven the long-termstability, durability, and reliability of the Tyco Electronics’ Raychem HVT system, even in highly polluted environments. The nontracking, insulating outer jacket canwithstand the rigors of long-term electrical stress and surface pollution without lossof performance. The nontracking material offers the additional benefit of beingmaintenance free, with no need for periodic cleaning. Extensive load cycle testingverifies the long-term thermomechanical compatibility between the terminationsystem and the cable.

Ease of installationHVT kits can be installed on all cable types without special adapters or accessories. No special tooling or connectors are required since HVT kits accept all commoncompression or terminal lugs. The HVT installation method also provides generouscable cutback and component positioning tolerances, further reducing installationvariability. Heat-shrinking allows the kits to be easily inspected, either visually or by simple touch, to help ensure proper installation.

Always ready for the job– even in emergenciesHVT kits have an unlimited shelf life. They remain ready to use on short notice, soyou have no worries about scrapping aged inventory or being caught with uselessproducts during an emergency or on a time-critical project.

Flexible and versatileAn HVT system may be installed upright or inverted and canbend to the same bending radius as the cable. Slim and light-weight, the system can also be mounted directly to fusecutouts or other devices, eliminating the cost of additionalsupporting brackets and cross arms.

46 and 69 kVAt voltages as high as 69 kV the need for proven stress con-trol is even more important. The materials used in our 46 and69 kV terminations (as with all lower voltages) are suitablefor severely polluted areas—and for all installation conditions, including top feed installation.

The material is designed to be resistant to impact damage from transportation orvandalism, a typical problem for heavy, inflexible porcelain products. TycoElectronics’ Raychem 46/69 kV terminations also require no compound filling whichcan leak over time.

Cold-applied termination systemTFT terminations are designed for customers who want Tyco Electronics materialtechnology in a cold-applied system. The cold-applied terminations also providepositive positioning of the stress control patch.

Tyco Electronics’ Raychem 69 kV termina-tions require no special or expensive toolsfor installation, and no soldering (see page108).

Tyco Electronics’ RaychemHVT system features a non-tracking, insulating surfacethat can withstand long-termelectrical stress and surfacepollution.

Tyco Electronics’ proven oil-sealingtechnology has been used for more than 18years in medium-voltage transition joints. This technology is now put to work in ourPILC termination kits (see page 111).

HVT testing dataTyco Electronics’ Raychem high-voltage terminations are fully qualified per IEEE-48as Class I terminations to provide a long, trouble-free service life. Independent test-ing and field experience have repeatedly proven the long-term durability, reliability, and stability of the HVT system, even in highly polluted environments. TycoElectronics’ proven nontracking, insulating jacket can withstand the rigors of long-term electrical stress and surface pollution without loss of performance. The non-tracking material is maintenance free and does not require periodic cleaning.Extensive load-cycle testing verifies the thermomechanical compatibility betweenthe termination system and cable.

Recommended guide specifications Please feel free to use one or all of the following in your design specifications:

Medium-voltage terminations (through 69 kV)Shielded power cable termination kits shall be factory engineered for theapplication. The kits shall consist of high-permittivity, high-resistivity, heat-shrinkablestress control tubing, and outer insulation tubing and skirts (outdoor applications)made from UV-stable, nontracking (per ASTM D 2303) materials. Heat-activatedsealant materials to help prevent moisture ingress and contamination should also beincluded. Termination kits shall meet or exceed all rating requirements of IEEE-48 forClass I terminations and the test sequence prescribed by IEEE-404, including 130°Cload cycling and 130°C impulse withstand.

Electrical stress control Shielded power cables require electrical stress control when terminated. When theinsulation shield is removed from a cable, the electrical field is concentrated at thecutback point, causing high electrical stress. If the stress is great enough, it can causethe air to break down, resulting in corona. High-stress areas also cause internal dis-charges. Corona or internal discharges will ultimately destroy the cable insulation, causing premature failure.

Cable termination without stress controlThe diagram below shows an energized cable termination without stress control. Theelectric field intensity is greatest where the equipotential lines (line of constant volt-age) are concentrated. Note the concentration near the edge of the semi-con shield.Stress control is required here to reduce the electrical stress below levels at whichthe air would break down or discharges would occur in the insulation.

Cable termination with Tyco Electronics’ unique stress control systemWith Tyco Electronics’ stress control tube installed, the equipotential lines are spreadout, distributing the electrical field and reducing the electrical stress to the cableinsulation’s operating level, as shown in the diagram below. This is achieved by theunique resistive and capacitive properties of the heat-shrinkable material. Note thatno diameter buildup is required as in a conventional stress cone that utilizes itsgeometry to reduce stress.

Recommended air clearance (Heat-shrink and cold-applied products)Phase/phase and phase/ground The stress control system provides a linear voltage distribution from the lug at highvoltage to the shield termination at ground potential. If the termination is installedtoo close to another phase termination or grounded metal, the electric stress in theair gap will rise to a level where discharge or flashover may occur. The table and dia-grams below indicate the minimum clearances needed between various terminationconfigurations. These clearances are based on IEEE Basic Impulse Levels (BIL).

Unlike the HVT product line, which includes a non-tracking tube anda separate stress control tube, the HVT-Ztermination consists of the same provennon-tracking tube together with a co-extruded, built-in stress control gradinglayer. This stress control layer is

based on ceramic semi-conductor tech-nology (ZnO) and provides superior dis-charge and impulse performance. Whenthe tubing is shrunk down, the coatingsoftens and sticks to irregular surfaces, providing moisture seals as well as elec-trical stress control. 3/C cable terminatingMOD-3X-HVT and MOD-3Y-HVT are for jacketing of phases and ground conductors.MOD-3A-HVT and MOD-3B-HVT provide jacketing, plus an environmental crotchsealing boot. Tubing provided does not have sealant coating on the inner wall. Thismakes it easy to remove, like any cable jacket. Each kit includes three four-foot-longsleeves for the phases and three four-foot-long smaller sleeves for any ground con-ductors. (Tubing can be field-cut to appropriate length.) A unique six-legged cablebreakout boot, provided in -3A and -3B kits, has an internal coating of a special adhe-sive to provide total environmental sealing of the cable crotch (breakout) area. It hasthree large legs for the phases and three smaller legs for ground conductors. Plugsare included for insertion into any unused ground legs to maintain the environmentalseal integrity.

Ordering information1. Standard package: 1 kit/box.2. Kit contents:

Unsealed (-3X and -3Y) kits contain rejacketing tubes for phase and ground conductors, and sealant for indoor terminations that don’t require environmental sealing.Sealed (-3A and -3B) kits contain rejacketing tubes, sealant, a cable breakout, and plugs for both outdoor and indoor terminations.

3. Kit components can be purchased in bulk quantities (see table below).

High voltage (69 kV) termination

Tyco Electronics’ Raychem EHVT serieshigh-voltage terminations utilize a stresscontrol system that has been field-proven for more than 20 years.

Reduced installation costsBecause the 46 and 69 kV HVT kits usestandard heat-shrink components, guidetubes are not needed for alignment, elas-tomer compression, computed venting,or field compound filling. Only standardcable support systems are needed, reducing steel structure or poletopsupport requirements.

Available in gray colorFor applications where gray appearanceis preferred, GHVT 69 kV terminationsare now available. These terminationsmeet the same criteria as TycoElectronics’ EHVT kits. GHVT kits havegray outer tubes and skirts.

Superior high-contaminationwithstand and non-tracking.The unique high-voltage insulatingsleeve is a field-proven, nontracking, anderosion-resistant material that does not

require periodic cleaning. The materialproperties have been formulated to bethermally stable and highly resistant toUV degradation, weathering, and envi-ronmental pollution.

Positive environmental sealThe cable, along with external ground, issealed from moisture ingress using TycoElectronics’ proven high-voltage, heat-activated scaling system. No field engi-neering or additional accessory kits arerequired.

Rated to IEEE-48, class 1, for outdoor (weather-exposed) use.For use on wire shield, wire/metallic-tape shield, lead sheath, and jacketedconcentric neutral cables. Both kitscontain a limited number of lightweightcomponents with unlimited shelf lifeunder normal storage conditions.
