PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This will be my last message to you the membership. Some of us will meet up in Ohio, a fun filled Puli focused weekend. Patty Anspach, Specialty Coordinator, took the job back on when the club needed her and led a great group of members who have worked hard to put this Celebration weekend toether. I hope to see some of you there. With sadness in my heart we need to reflect on the loss of two members. Linn Hiett and Irma Fertl, both long term members of the PCA. Both ladies have given a tremendous amount of their time to the breed they loved and also the PCA. A huge loss to the club. As I look back at the last two years, my thoughts go immediately to the many times this board had to respond to things they had no control over. We did stumble on occasion but through it all we all stayed committed to the club and finding the best solution for the club. In closing, I want to say that many of the problems our breed club has are not unlike other clubs across the country. We are an aging group and young people do not seem to get in-volved. It is exciting to see new people stepping up and taking on jobs. Do not be afraid to offer your skills to the club. We need you. From the bottom of my heart, I thank my board for your commitment and help. When I was asked by the nominating committee if I wanted to stay on another term, you were not the reason I said no. I have enjoyed working with you and know those staying on will do a great job.

Committee Job Descriptions

Dave Johnson has collected a number of differ-ent job descriptions and will be sending them to the person doing that particular job to see what changes need to be made to the description. After receiving the corrected descriptions, they will be uploaded to the PCA website so that members will be able to see what a certain job entails if they are interested in volunteering for a particular job. Anna Quigley requested that committee heads get their job descriptions to Dave as soon as possible.

Email Address Changes

Julie Schuh reported that she has talked to Jim Moen about changing PCA's email address for board members to a consistent format (example: [email protected]). Jim has indicated to Julie that he will be able to make these changes. At this time, we are only wait-ing for Jim to set up the new email addresses. Maggie Witwer will follow up with Jim on this matter.

Website Changes

It has been pointed out to members of the Board that information on the club's webpage has gotten rather stale and is not being updated

on a regular basis. Maggie will also discuss this matter with Jim to see how to better facilitate updates in a timely fashion.

Financial Records Audit

Jane Exum reported that the audit committee is waiting for financial information from Marla Williams so that they can begin the audit of our financial records and accounts. Marla stated that she is finishing up updating the records prior to sending them to the committee. Ted Lawson suggested that we set a date that all audit materials must be turned over to the com-mittee.

Motion: I, Ted Lawson, move that all finan-cial records shall be forwarded to Barbe Pessina or Jane Exum no later than May 11, 2015. Second: Bette Tannen

Puli News

The cost of printing Puli News appears to be an unsustainable endeavor for PCA. The cost of printing and mailing out copies of PN to the membership exceed the cost of yearly dues. With this issue in mind, Bette Tannen had pro-posed a motion to charge an additional $40 per year for members who wish to receive a hard copy of Puli News. At some point, the Board added a category of “needs more discussion” as an option when voting on a Board motion. In this instance, “needs more discussion” was the top vote getter on Bette's motion.

Dave Johnson pointed out that Puli News is the one tangible benefit that all members of the club receive. Jackie Beaudoin feels that the

club should grandfather in old members and give them a hard copy of Puli News if they de-sire to receive one. It was pointed out that when Linore Cleveland took over as the Puli News editor, one of the stipulations was that Puli News would go to an online edition. For over a year now, hard copies have been mailed to the entire membership. Kathy Allen pointed out that this issue is too important to the mem-bership not to be discussed with them and re-ceiving feedback from the membership prior to the Board making a final decision on this issue. Jane Exum proposed that the Board add an article to the next edition of Puli News and all issues prior to the National Specialty asking for feedback from the membership and letting the members know that the Board will vote on this issue at the annual meeting.

Motion:

I, Bette Tannen, move to table my motion re-garding an additional cost for Puli News until after the Board has heard from the membership.

Motion Approved

Membership Renewal

Marla Williams reported that 38 members did not renew their membership by the deadline. PCA has over 300 members at this time. Marla recommended sending the lapsed members a note on how to reinstate their membership to PCA.

Meet The Breed Banners

Maggie Witwer and Linda Hall have been re-searching the purchasing of retractable screens which could be used in Meet the Breed displays. These screens are retractable and are relatively light weight, so they could be easily transported from location to location. Maggie and Linda have found a vendor who manufactures this type of screens. The total cost would be ap-proximately $300-350. The banners are printed in color.

Motion:

I, Ann Bowley, move that Maggie Witwer and Linda Hall proceed with the purchase of the screens for PCA's Meet the Breeds display.

Second: Julie Schuh

Motion Approved

Annual Board Meeting

Patty Anspach needs to know which day the Board wishes to hold the annual Board Meeting. The options are to hold it on Wednesday eve-ning or on Thursday between the agility trial and the welcome party.

Motion:

I, Bette Tannen, move that the annual Board Meeting be held one hour after the agility trial ends on Thursday, October 15, 2015.

Second: Maggie Witwer

Motion Approved

Prize for Raffle At Annual Dinner

Julie Schuh reported that Patty Anspach wishes to purchase a cage dryer as a raffle prize at the Annual Dinner. Patty estimates the cost would not be more than $300.

Motion:

I, Julie Schuh, move that $300 be approved for Patty Anspach to purchase a cage dryer for the raffle at the annual dinner.

Second: Ann Bowley

Motion Approved

Sweepstakes Judge Selection

Jackie Beaudoin inquired about the procedure for the selection of the sweepstakes judge at the national specialty. In recent years the club has had many foreign judges as our sweepstakes judges. Jackie pointed out that there are many local judges that are provisional in the breed who would love the opportunity to judge a sweepstakes class to garner additional experi-ence. Julie Schuh pointed out that the show chairman chooses the sweepstakes judges and that they are not paid for their assignment.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30pm.

Motions voted on by the Board

Motion:

I, Julie Schuh, move that the trophy budget for the 2015 diamond jubilee specialty be increased to $4000, including the donations already given.

Second: Dagmar Fertl

Requirements needed for dogs to enter the State of Ohio

All dogs over the age of 12 weeks are required to have been vaccinated against rabies and to have proof of that vaccination.

All dogs must have a “ Certificate of Veterinary Inspection “ . [ a health certificate ]

Your Veterinarian can issue this Certificate. This ensures all required vaccinations are up to date and the dog is fit to travel. This certificate is only good for 30 days after your Veterinarian signs it.

You must have the original Certificate that has been signed. Photo copies are not good unless they have an original signa-ture of your Veterinarian.

All states have their own requirements , however this meets most of them.

PCA Health Committee

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM YOUR HEALTH COMMITTEE There have been recent incidents where the USDA has attended Dog Events and checked the CVI for each dog(certificate of veterinary inspection). Apparently this is becoming more common. We all know that airlines require a CVI when transporting a dog via air. But what apparently a lot of people don’t know is that these certificates are re-quired by many states no matter the mode of travel. They generally are not asked for as we all know we have taken our dogs to many, many states without ever having one of these. BUT they can ask for them in certain states. The Health Committee feels that this is important for our members to be aware of as this can be in effect in some states even for a vacation or to “visit grandma.” This is the link to the USDA APHIS web page that has links to the state pages. People can click on a state to see what the requirements are for that particular state. USDA APHIS | Animal Health

Important Information for ALL Members of the Puli Club of America

REGARDING PULI NEWS

In the last issue of Puli News, your PCA Board requested that you offer suggestions about how to handle the distribution of Puli News. Printing and mailing costs (mailing costs have really risen in the last few years) for mailing a hard copy of Puli News con-tinue to increase Currently, the yearly cost to mail 6 issues of Puli News to a US Member of PCA is $40. This does not include the costs to print and mail the Specialty flyer or the Membership list. These items do increase the total postal costs slightly but, since additional ounces are not nearly as expensive as the initial ounces, it saves PCA money to include them with a mailed issue of Puli News. Your editor tries to segregate the costs for purposes of calculating what it costs to print and mail Puli News to each mem-ber. So the Board asked for suggestions that would allow PCA to continue to mail a hard copy to each member while continuing to in-clude material in Puli News of interest to ALL MEMBERS and also containing costs. Thank you to those of you who took the time to offer suggestions. The Board will be considering this issue at the BOARD MEETING to be held at the National Specialty in Oc-tober. Listed below are some of the suggestions from members regarding the mailing of Puli News. If you’d like to contribute your thoughts on this issue, PLEASE send your suggestions to PCA’s Corresponding Secretary, Julie Schuh ([email protected]) before the October 15th meeting of the Board. These are the options that people indicated in their response to us. We welcome more ideas… 1. Offer the hard copy to those members who want to purchase it at the cost to PCA (approximately $40/yr for members in the

US). Other breed clubs, such as the Airedale club, are making this offer to their members. This option has no effect on yearly dues and the cost of the hard copy of PN is only borne by the person receiving the hard copy. Puli News would continue to be available online, in COLOR, for free.

2. Reduce the number of issues from 6 per year to 4 per year and continue to mail a hard copy to every US member. This option will have an impact on communication with our members (fewer issues per year). However, this option will save on printing and postage costs. Augment the 4 issues of Puli News with e-mails keeping members up to date on what is going on with the club: for example—officer and committee reports could be included in the e-mails rather than being printed in Puli News. There are certainly areas in Puli News that are also on our website or could easily go in an e-mail so that the 4 issues that are printed would not need to be limited in pages.

3. Reduce the page count of the issues — this saves printing and mailing costs but would mean less information in each issue — possibly not posting pictures of our top 10 dogs in all disciplines (conformation, agility, obedience, and herding) It would also mean fewer articles that are useful, interesting, or educational material—many directed to our members who do not actively participate in organized activities (like conformation, agility, etc)..

4. Print Puli News on a cheaper and lighter paper. If we used the type of paper found in magazines it would probably reduce the mailing cost significantly.

5. Raise yearly dues for all members. According to our Constitution and By-laws the dues cannot be raised more than $10 in any given year. This will probably necessitate a raise in dues next year to defray costs and maybe continuing raises in following years. The disadvantage with this choice is that everyone will pay more when there are members who prefer to read PN online and don’t want a hard copy. Dues have not been raised in over 15+ years.

Please send the Board your comments and ideas to our corresponding secretary Julie Schuh, [email protected] or 1616 E Calumet Street, Appleton WI 54915. And, if you are attending the National Specialty, plan to attend the Board Meeting on Thursday afternoon to provide your thoughts. Puli News will continue to be available online to ALL members.

OPEN COMMITTEE POSITION(S):

The position of Specialty Advisor is open. PCA NEEDS someone to step-up and volunteer to fill this position. The position of Specialty advisor should be spread around the PCA membership. In case of emergencies or the dreaded burn-out , there will always be someone to pick up the reins and continue to insure we will always have our Specialties. If someone will volunteer, Patty Anspach, our current Specialty Advisor, would be overjoyed to have him/her shadow her this year. Don’t be afraid of the big sounding title [ Specialty Advisor ], There are many to answer questions, including AKC, and also to point you in the right direction. Please consider giving of your time and effort so our club , PCA, can continue to enjoy Specialties.

Web Page Committee looking for volunteers If you would like to help update and improve PCA’s website, please let us know. We are looking both for technical skills, to add and change web pages, and for creative skills in building new content. Technical: We are beginning our transition to using the well-known WordPress tool for many of PCA’s web pages. No special PC tools are needed, just your own web browser and a certain amount of computer literacy. BUT, you don’t need to be a web pro-grammer. We can work with you to learn WordPress, which is kind of like using a word processor. Content creation: The most important things are knowledge of the Puli breed and the Club, along with good visual design skills. Graphical layout and photo processing skills are a plus. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, please contact the Chair of the Web Page Committee, Jim Moen at [email protected]

Herding Chair The herding chair for PCA serves as statistician to determine those Pulik who should be recognized in the Herding Top 10 each year. The chair also organizes or finds a chair to organize a herding test(s) and/or trial(s) for each Specialty where it is possible to have a herding event. Herding instinct is still strong in the Puli and it is important that the club recognize herding accomplishments by our dogs and support events that determine or demonstrate the strength of this instinct. Public Education Coordinator The public education coordinator oversees and provides assistance for the hosting of “Meet the Breed” events. In addition, the public

education coordinator develops and distributes materials to publicize the activities of the Puli Club of America

Legislative Liaison

The legislative liaison keeps abreast of legislation that applys to the owning, breeding, and selling of dogs and shares that information

with the club via articles in Puli News and alerts to our members when action is required to have our members voice their objections

to said legislation. Given the “no pets” agenda of various organizations, it is important for PCA to stay aware of what is being pro-

posed and how it affects our members.

MORE IMPORTANT NEWS FOR PULI CLUB OF AMERICA MEMBERS

Currently, there are several open Committee positions . The PCA Board asks that you consider each of these positions and think seri-ously about whether you can lend us your talents and volunteer to either chair or help with any of the following committee positions. If you feel that you cannot do the entire job but are willing to do a portion of the job, please let us know — in many instances, the activities can be split between several people.

PCA is only as strong as its member participants. In most instances, you do not have to participate with your dog in organized activities to be involved in our committees. And if you’d like to get your “feet wet” by helping with any of PCA’s committees and, especially, those that have open positions, PLEASE VOLUNTEER.

GCH Bowmaker Red, White & Blue - "Blu".

2015 is becoming a great year for Blu. Recently winning both Best in Shows for Regular Variety and Owner Handler at Bloomington IL, under Judge Larry Mackai, on the same day. We think this is a first for AKC. The following weekend Blu takes a Reserve Best in Show at Woodstock VA, under Judge Judith Ann Smith.

Our focus this year has been on the 2015 National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS), with 14 Best in Shows and 41 Group 1s and 38 other group placements, making Blu the #1 NOHS dog of all breeds. Our aim for 2015 is for a Puli to remain as the #1 NOHS of all breeds and to break all previous NOHS ranking records. Both are currently achieved and remain in sight for the year end. I would like to thank everyone for their con-tinued support in our goals, in particular Linda and Michael Pitts, Jackie Beaudoin and our Breeder Sherry Gibson for their guidance, help and support.

In MEMORY of IRMA FERTL (11 May 1942—29 June 2015)

After being diagnosed with gastric cancer in May 2014, and nearly a year of chemotherapy treatments, Irma chose to take control on how she was living her life, by choosing to stop accepting chemotherapy treatments that she felt were not enhancing the quality of her life. Irma’s last days were spent at home in Magnolia, Texas, with her daughters Dagmar and Tania Fertl. Irma was also attended closely by her heart dog Lexi (one of her Pulik).

Irma was Austrian by birth, with a Hungarian father. But, by choice, she was a proud American and Texan, when she and husband Walter H. Fertl arrived in the U.S. in 1965. Irma began her love affair with dog shows in the early 1970s, while living in Ponca City, Oklahoma. The Piroska breeding program began with Old English Sheepdogs in Oklahoma, moved to Houston, Texas, and later, the breeding program’s focus then transitioned in 1988 to Irma’s real passion - Pulik. Irma owned 28 OES over the course of approxi-mately 20 years of being active in breeding and showing OES. Irma’s start in Pulik was with a female Puli (“Feather”) whom she ob-tained in 1986. She bred 40 Puli champions including a Best in Show winner in both the U.S. and Europe, and the first female Puli bronze grand champion in Texas. Irma’s happiest moments truly were spent whelping and raising Puli pups.

Irma’s Puli-related accomplishments/involvements included (but were not limited to) two Top Ten Puli, including a Number 1 Puli ; and owner-handling Pulik to multiple foreign titles in Hungary, Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, and Bermuda. Irma was very proud of her wins at PCA National Specialties that included a Best of Opposite Sex in Jr Sweepstakes in 1986; followed with a Best in Sweepstakes in 1987; a Best in Sweepstakes in 1988 with a puppy from her first Puli litter; and Best of Breed in 1992. Irma served PCA as head of the Book of Tiitleholders committee up until her death; served on the Board during 1989-1990; and acted as Chairperson for the Reg-ister of Merit Formulating Committee during xx. Irma took the lead in bringing the PCA National Specialty to Houston, Texas dur-ing 1998 and spearheaded PCA-supported entries in conjunction with the large Houston dog show cluster for many years, including the most recent one in July.

In addition to being an active breeder and exhibitor, Irma was a licensed AKC and UKC judge, and also judged at international dog shows. Irma was thrilled to be able to promote Pulik when she was judging, and it made her so happy when she was able to award a Puli – Best in Show. Irma judged the 2004 Puli Specialty in Ft Wayne IN. Irma was so proud that PCA had voted for her to judge the 2016 National Specialty, and it was one of her biggest regrets that she would not get the opportunity to judge that event.

Irma was a generous and tireless mentor and enthusiast of canine activities. Irma always felt that every dog should be balanced, with titles in the front and back, and a number of Piroska Puli earned Versatile Puli titles awarded by PCA. Irma even earned two nose-work titles with one of her Pulk, just a few weeks before her passing, Active in conformation, herding, obedience, tracking, and nose-work, Irma also was very supportive of her daughter Dagmar who headed down the agility path with their Pulik – and, who along with Joe Lapine – helped Irma demonstrate the performance capabilities of her breeding program, by adding agility champion-titled dogs to her credit.

An avid competitor, Irma was always willing to offer support and direction to anyone new to the sport. Irma led judges’ education programs on the Puli; served as a mentor to many judges; and she never tired of sharing her love and knowledge of the breed. Train-ing and grooming sessions often ended with a home-cooked meal and lively conversation on breed history and standards. There are

many in the sport today that benefited from Irma’s friendship and guidance. A few months ago, before her passing, PCA awarded Irma a lifetime membership with the club, recognizing her con-tributions to the club and the breed as a whole.

In MEMORY of LINN HIETT

A member of the Puli Club of America since 1978, Linn and her husband, Bill, worked in many ways to champion, pro-tect, and just plain love our special breed. They hosted national specialties, ran Ways & Means, and over the years quietly did countless other things, including rescue. Their dogs were their kids. They bred infrequently, but their Mt. Hood ken-nel produced lovely dogs which exemplified the breed. Deepest condolences go out to Bill during this very difficult time for him.

Linn and Bill bred or co-bred a national specialty winner, a regional specialty winner, a dog that finished at a national, a top producing dam, at least two top 10 Pulis... The list goes on, despite the fact that they did not breed often.

It was Linn’s Dad, John (Jack) Travis (Devon Hills Puli) that got the Hietts involved with Pulis. As Linn herself wrote on their Mt Hood (kennel name) website: we've been caring for, feeding, and satisfying every emotional whim of our Pulik for as long as I can remember. We've bred, trained and shown Pulik which have competed in all the myriad areas they ex-cel in; herding, conformation showing, convalescent home visiting, and so on. Our dogs go back to Am/Can Champion Csanyteleki Cigany, the all-time Top Producing Puli Sire, and to Wallbanger, Windswept, and Hunnia lines. We've shown many different Pulik to group placements, specialty wins, group firsts, Ch. Mt. Hood Tordor's Last Word ( Zinger) with his IAKC Best In Show, and Mt. Hood's Gomboc of Tordor with his Best in Specialty Show. Bill has enjoyed traveling to Mexico to put Mexican and FCI International titles on the dogs, and several of them have also become Triple Champions, with titles in Canada as well.

Linn and Bill hosted 4 National Specialties in the Portland Area

Besides all she did in the Puli world, Linn was involved with other causes and several years back received the Governor's Award for Volunteer of the Year. She was a person that quietly did much.

Calculating the Top 10 Herding Pulik Submitted by the 1995-1997 Herding Committee comprised of Susan McConnell, Patty Anspach, Gary Hall and Marie Joyner. Effective 1/1 1996, the Herding Statistician will tabulate points for the Top Ten Herding Pulik in the following man-ner: Points for New titles Earned: 5 points For each AKC herding title completed exclude ing test level HT and PT 25 points Herding Champion title (HCh) Points for Each Qualifying Score: 1 point 60-69 2 points 70-79 3 points 80-89 4 points 90-99 5 points 100 Points for Each Class Placement: 5 points 1st place 4 points 2nd place 3 points 3rd place 2 points 4th place 1 point 5th place Points for High in Trial and Reserve High in Trial 10 points High in Trial 5 points Reserve High in Trial The herding committee has voted unanimously in favor of this proposed scoring system. Rational for the Scoring System: Of course the first question to address is, why change the scoring system at all? Why not simply count the number of dogs defeated, as in obedience and conformation? There are several reasons, most of which pertain to the scarcity of tri-als and the small number of dogs competing in the advanced levels. Let me (Susan McConnell) address the later issue first: clearly, simply counting the number of dogs defeated presents a problem if there are marked disparities in the number of dogs entered at different levels. At a typical

herding trial, there may be only two or four Advanced dogs, vs a dozen or more in Started. Second, while it is the case in herding that Advanced dogs can continue to compete indefi-nitely at this level, they cannot go back and compete at the Intermediate level—obedience dogs can continue to com-pete in both Open B and Utility and really rack up points in two sets of classes. Third, there are very few herding trials offered — while many dogs competing in conformation and obedience could compete nearly every weekend if they wanted to, few regions offer more than four or five week-ends of herding trials a year. Thus there is less opportunity to accumulate points by beating other dogs. Fourth, there is the unpredictable nature of the sheep to take into considera-tion. A Started dog can be walked around the course close to his handler, which allows the handler to intervene fairly di-rectly to troublesome situations, often resulting in high scores. An Advanced dog has to use his instinct, his intui-tion, his stock sense because his handler is prevented from leaving a post in the middle of the arena—when the sheep do something unpredictable (which sheep always do!), dog and handler must communicate over a long distance with split second accuracy. The proposed system is a compromise that gives value to three separate measures of success: titles earned (a measure of overall achievement), scores earned (which grade each dog relative to an absolute standard of a perfect run), and points for placements, High in Trial and Reserve High in Trial (in recognition that this is a competitive event). We think that this will level the playing field but still allow the top dogs to rise to the top. As before, this system awards points only to dogs competing at the trial level in AKC events, since the herding tests are pass/fail and are not scored.

PRESENTING THE NOMINATED BOARD FOR 2015-2017

President : JANE SLADE-EXUM

I have been involved with pulik for many years. I try to always have well rounded dogs with titles in the front and back. I have enjoyed serving on the board as Vice President for the past sev-eral years and I am also involved with Puli Rescue. Dealing with Rescue has given me a wider view of our dogs and their temperaments. As President, I want to work harder to educate the public and the membership about how to select a dog/puppy. I have run all of my dogs in agility and hope to increase the number of pulik we see entering trials. Our dogs are so athletic and they perform amazingly in agility. Herding is another area in which I'd like to see increased participation. To see our dogs doing what comes instintively is a great joy. Lastly, I'd like to encourage all members to look through Puli News and consider helping in one or more of the areas listed.

Vice President Brian Brubaker

Brian Brubaker has has had a lifelong obses-sion with dogs for as long as he can remem-ber. (The library books on dogs at the

Rouses Point elementary school with his name written all over the check out cards can attest to this.). He first became in-volved with dog training and showing through his local 4-H club and its leaders who breed and show Alaskan Mala-mutes. Through 4-H Brian did extensive work training his family dog through a CDX equivalent and in junior showman-ship. Brian's relentless pursuit of pulik began by stalking Ann Bowley and Kermit at dog shows around the northeast circa 1989. He finally acquired his first puli, Mac, along with his wife, Alece, in 1997 from Dr. Mary Wakeman. Since that time Brian has owned/co-owned 5 pulik finish-ing their American and Canadian champi-onships and participating in herding testing and agility training. In his professional life Brian works in in-ternational education managing custom-ized international education projects as an Asst Vice President for IES Abroad in Chi-cago. In this role he manages a national sales team and client relations for his divi-sion yielding about $6.5M in annual reve-nue. Brian is interested in serving on the board of the PCA since he's been a member for nearly 20 years and has never contributed to the club in this way. He has served as the Chair of Ways and Means since 2006. He is also a member of the Elgin Kennel Club (IL), Harrisburg Kennel Club (PA), and Morris and Essex Kennel Club (NJ). When he's not working, doing puli stuff, or serving as a practice goalie for his hockey-fanatic nephew, Brian loves traveling, gar-dening with Alece, riding his bike, and enjoying good food with friends and family.

Recording Secretary Kathy Allen

It's gratifying to have been selected by the Nominating Committee to serve a second term as Recording Secretary. I acquired my first puli in 1988 and have had at least one in our home ever since. We currently have a household of 8 pulis ranging in age from a little over 1 year to a nearly 13 year old. I have been a member of PCA since 1989. In my professional career I work as a land use planner for a local city.

I have been involved in showing in confor-mation since we acquired our very first puli. For about the past 10 years we have dabbled in also competing in both obedi-ence and rally. Our pulis have earned vari-ous titles over the years but I am most proud of our two pulis who have earned PCA's Versatile Puli award.

These are hard times for breeders and owners of purebred dogs. The "Adopt Don't Shop" movement has gained momen-tum and for many in the general public owning a non-rescue or purebred dog is no longer considered politically correct. I wholeheartedly support breed rescue and especially the efforts of our own rescue group but think it is critical in these times to try to get out a positive message about the importance of preserving our purebred dogs for future generations to enjoy!

Corresponding Secretary Julie Schuh

I am honored to have been nominated as Corresponding Secretary for the Puli Club for another term. As a matter of introduc-tion to those who do not know me person-ally, I am the person behind sending out those emails you find in your inbox regard-ing special events and announcements for

Page 19: PULI NEWS - Puli Club of America, Inc. · Puli News - 2015, Page 4 club should grandfather in old members and give them a hard copy of Puli News if they de-sire to receive one. It

the Puli Club! (By the way, if you are not receiving my emails or do not wish to re-ceive the emails, please let me know.) My current “day job” is as a Project Man-ager for a Regional Electrical Contractor specializing in airports, highways, and local roads. And as some of you are aware I have been diligently working on my PhD in Phy-schology Counseling, specializing in End-of-Life care. I have been working on my PhD part-time for what seems like forever but am so happy to report that my disserta-tion has been accepted for publication and I am officially a PhD! I have been owned by Pulis for about 13 years now. Echo, my first Puli is no longer with us but she paved the way for our sec-ond Puli to keep her compny, who we named Capt. BlackJack Sparrow. Then a couple of years ago, I got my third Puli, Parker. Those of you on social media are aware that Parker is an overachiever, or I suppose it is quite possible that I have be-come a “helicopter Puli mom”. My eve-nings are filled with everything Puli, as we compete in conformation, obedience, rally, agility, barn hunting, nosework and now herding. I teach classes at my local club; take classes at my local club, and have learned to steward as well in all events. Being a Board member of the Puli Club of America is a wonderful opportunity and I very much look forward to working with and working for all of its members for an-other two years. Treasurer: Linore Cleveland I am looking forward to serving as the PCA Treasurer again — I was treasurer from 2007 to 2011. I hope to keep all our mem-bers in the loop in terms of how PCA is handling its funds, I am also excited to serve with the fabulous board that your nominating committee has put together.

I have been the editor of Puli News for several years now and also serve as Treas-urer of Puli Rescue and as the Herding Committee chair—although I’d love to find someone else with a love of herding that could take over that position for me. I also have my own dog training business—exclusively doing ‘clicker training”. And, as you may have noticed from reading Puli News, I also have a Puli (“Kerge”) with whom I compete in obedience, rally, and dance. We were competing in agility and herding until a year ago when I broke my hip—I can’t keep up with him anymore in agility nor be in a pasture with sheep. So we’re trying something new to utilize his herding skills—Treibball. We may also continue the scent work we did several years ago, Pulis seem to excel in most ven-ues! Since I still have a few available hours each week, I am also Trial Secretary for my obedience club’s annual rally and obedi-ence trials. I have a wonderful husband (of 50 years now) who supports me in all that I do! Board Member : Ann Bowley

I have been a member of P.C.A. for over 40 years. I have been involved with pulik showing in conformation, obedience, herd-ing and breeding our fantastic breed. I have been involved with health issues hav-ing had my pulik used for the pioneering of the Penn Hip program. I started doing eye exams on my pulik since the 1970’s back when I was involved with my collies and eye testing. I have bred over 75 champions, had top 10 and #1 Pulik on several levels. Wallbanger pulik have won several BB at nationals as well as WD-WB wins, and as producers have been influential to the breed. The Wallbanger pulik have won numerous BIS for me as well as for their

owner/handlers. Ch Wallbanger Kemit J. Bounce HT was the first GROUP 1 puli at Westminster and also was SHOW DOG OF THE YEAR Kennel Review Tourna-ment of Chs. As a board member I hope to continue to listen and act upon what is im-portant to our membership and to our fan-tastic breed.

Board Member: Jackie Beaudoin

I am honored to be considered for another term on the board. It is a commitment I take very seriously and I will continue to do my best.

Board Member: Glen Van Der Hart

It is an honor to have been asked to be a nominee, in filling an upcoming Board po-sition. Over the years past, I have been on many Boards, holding a range of positions. It is my endeavor to hold this position with continued grace and dignity.

Both Les and I have been the daddies of Pulik for the past 9 years. Simply put, we have had an absolute blast of a time, with my only regret of not having a Puli sooner. Like the unique and rareness of our dogs, so are the lifetime friends we have made through our Pulik.

Page 20: PULI NEWS - Puli Club of America, Inc. · Puli News - 2015, Page 4 club should grandfather in old members and give them a hard copy of Puli News if they de-sire to receive one. It

Board Member: Nancy Kelly

I have had Pulik since the early 1980s. It wasn’t until the mid- 1990s that they became more than just pets and com-panions. I have been active in Obedi-ence with my Puli since that time. As time has gone on, I have also involved them in Conformation, Herding and Agility. I find the breed to be ex-tremely smart and versatile. I have also done limited breeding. That is proba-bly the most challenging thing I have done with the breed. It is not an easy task to find the right mates and beyond the basics of health concerns, whelping a litter, raising them with appropriate stimulation and then finding the right homes for each one has been scary and rewarding. I am now retired and have enjoyed being able to spend more time with Pulik and getting involved in even more with them. They have thrived on activity and challenges and I cannot imagine my life without a Puli. As a Board Member, I hope to see the club be involved in all aspects of our breed and continue to have a breed that is “one of a kind” as the Dr. Pepper ad said. It is important to educate mem-bers and the public about not only dog ownership but also Puli ownership.

Board Member: Stacy Gail Czekaj

Stacy Gail Czekaj loves animals. Born and raised on a farm in Tawas City, Michigan, much of Stacy’s early life was spent raising and caring for llamas, sheep, livestock, dogs, horses and more. Her passion for horses led her to compete successfully in major Midwest equestrian and rodeo events and exhibitions over the years, including dressage and barrel riding. Today however, Stacy is most passionate about dogs, par-ticularly the Puli.

Stacy has been a member of the American and Canadian National Puli Clubs for over 10 years. However, her fondness for the breed began years earlier as she would drive 200 miles each way to see and talk to Puli owners at the Detroit Kennel Club show in downtown Detroit each year. As an AKC owner/handler, she has success-fully competed and earned awards at every level with her dogs, Marley and now Gyula. Stacy represented the American Puli Club at the National Canine Health Convention in St. Louis a short time back. Her report on health related issues, break-throughs and future concerns was reported in the Puli News. Since becoming a mem-ber, Stacy has learned a great deal and has developed many new friendships with Puli owners across North America and the world. She is very proud of her appoint-ment to the group’s board of directors.

Outside the ring, Stacy currently works in the “people” healthcare industry, Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. She is a surgical technician and has successfully served in many professional capacities at major hospitals over the past 25 years. Cur-rently at Beaumont, Stacy is a respected member of the hospital’s nationally recog-nized heart, thoracic and vascular operating team. She has been there since 2002.

Stacy is married to her husband, Mark, and resides in Dearborn, Michigan. Beyond caring for and showing her dogs, Stacy likes to garden, raise butterflies and frequently volunteers her time and resources to the local animal shelter.

Board Member: Jim Moen

We first brought (rescued) Pulik into our home in 1974, and Pulik have run the place ever since. We subscribed to Puli News for years, but in 1993 we got Pulik from PCA breeders, joined the club and got completely hooked on Conformation, Agility, Obedience and Herding. I enjoy the training sessions, and I still love that feeling of moving around the ring with my Puli. I previously served in various posi-tions on the PCA Board for eight years.

Professionally, I worked over 31 years in Information Technology, initially as a de-veloper and later as Software Engineering Manager in the IT department of a major corporation. My career helped me to work with others, often with divergent opinions, to get complicated things done. Since re-tirement in 1999, I did IT Consulting for another 10 years. I've managed the PCA website, that of my son's Language School business in Germany, and several websites of my own.

As successful as PCA has been, I think we need to improve our efforts to bring in and mentor new Puli owners, with hopes some will want to learn to become serious breed-ers. We are a small breed, and it's impor-tant that we continue and improve the best qualities in our lines.

AKC Delegate: Maggie Witwer

I have been owned by Pulik since 1969 and started showing them in the mid-1970’s, about the same time I became a member of PCA. I am a retired librarian and live on a working Hereford ranch east of Greeley, Colorado. My Pulis enjoy the wide-open spaces and I spend a fair amount of time

picking large and small bits of tumbleweed out of my dogs.

I have served 2 terms as AKC Delegate for PCA. Additionally, I have served on the board and as recording secretary in the last 25 years as well as chairing the ethics com-mittee that wrote the current Guidelines that appear in the back of Puli News and brought to completion with Linda Hall the official AKC Puli Breed Club Flier. I have served in every capacity on the board and

show committee for the Greeley Kennel Club and am currently secretary and liaison to specialty clubs.

The American Kennel Club faces many challenges today including declining regis-trations, anti-dog and anti-breeding legisla-tion as well as the aging of dog fanciers and drawing younger people into the sport. To support the dog fancy and purebred dogs, AKC must:

Improve its image and public visibility and become a more inclusive organization.

Create a pro-active strategy and be a leader in combating anti-dog and anti-breeding legislation cur-rently being introduced across the nation by animal rights groups.

Be the champion of purebred dogs and present the cause of purebred dogs and purebred breeders to the public.

Provide incentives to encourage the registration of all eligible AKC dogs.

Help and support the welfare of its clubs.

Support youth participation and Junior Showmanship.

Eliminate bureaucracy and use current technology to speed up Events operations.

Do not cut positions that provide direct communication with clubs such as Field Representatives at events and staff at Delegate com-mittee meetings.

AKC is the key organization in defending the sport of dogs and the cause of purebred dogs. As AKC delegate, I communicate to the PCA board and club members AKC’s plans and proposals and present PCA’s re-sponses to AKC on these matters. I would be honored to continue to support and rep-resent PCA and our unique and beloved breed in this capacity.

AKC Gazette Pulik Breed Column

June 2015 by Dagmar Fertl

What Does “Medium Size” Mean?

The terms medium and moderate are used often to describe the Puli. What does me-dium mean with regard to a Puli’s size? In the late 1800s, the Puli’s size was refer-enced as “lower than the highest point of the shepherd’s boots”. As with many other breeds, individual Pulik were used for dif-ferent purposes, and different sizes re-sulted—or was it actually the different sizes of Pulik that drove the variety of jobs assigned of them? More than 70 years ago, the Hungaian studbook reorded standards for the follow-ing classes: the police Puli (19 inches plus); the working ormedium Puli (19.7 to 15.7 inches), the small Puli (15.7 to 11.8 inches); and the dwarf, miniature, or toy-Puli (11 inches and under). When standardization of the breed began, it was decided that the medium-sized dogs

were most representative of the traditional herding Puli—they wre established as the desired size—and during the past 50-60 years, Pulik have become more uniform in appearance. The ideal Puli male measures 17 inches from the withers (Peak of the houlders) to the ground, while bitches are 16 inches. An inch over or under these measurements is acceptable, according to the breed stan-dard. Size deviating from the limits men-tioned in the standard is not a disqualifica-tion in the United States. The weight of the Puli depends on his height, bone, and the amount of coat. A 15-inch female with a short haircut may weigh 23 to 25 pounds, while a 17-inch male in full show coat may weigh about 37 pounds (the coat will weigh about 5 to 7 pounds on the dog). While size is one factor, one must also remember that the proportions of the Puli are the most important. The Puli is a square breed with slightly more leg and body. The distance from the top of withers to elbow is slightly less than the distance from elbow to ground, the proportion be-ing 45 percent body depth to 55 percent

leg length. (That proportion is not speci-fied in the American standard but can be found in the original Hungarian standard and appears in the official Illustrated Guide to the Pili, published by the Puli Club of America, puliclub.org/jeCIllusGuide.pdf.) Bottom line, one must always consider the original purpose for thwich the Puli was bred: sheepherding. Only a medium-sized, very agile, sound Puli could move a herd of sheep, leaping over the terrain and bouncing off the sheep to get them moving in the right direction, and do that all day. Remember also, there is more to a Puli than his coat. A short-legged Puli with a heavy coat would not be very effective in his job. Too big or too heavy, a Puli wouldn’t last the day. I always like to think of a Puli as being a big dog in a “medium” package.

RESCUE Featuring Napoleon

Meet Napoleon! We adopted Napoleon as a re-home through the Puli Club Rescue Trust about a year ago. Napoleon's previous owners took great care of him for the first 7 years of his life, but unfortunately had to move out of the country and couldn't bring him with them. The Rescue Trust stepped in and contacted us, since we lived nearby in San Francisco.

Napoleon is the first Puli we've owned, and he's proved to be a fantastic introduction to the life of being a Puli owner. Since we adopted him, he's shown himself to be one of the smartest, calmest dogs I've ever met. Unlike many Pulik, Napoleon rarely barks; only when he's very excited because we're about to play his favorite game - fetch. He also loves people, rubbing his face on the leg of almost every new person he meets as a greeting. And he has a beautiful coat, with long, thin cords. Like most Pulik, he turns a lot of heads walking down the street.

Aside from fetch, he knows dozens of tricks. He's got the basics down: sit, shake, high five, turn around, and roll over. But he also knows some advanced tricks. For example, when it's time for a walk, he'll go and fetch his own leash and bring it to us. Similarly, if the mail is sitting on the bench near the front door and we are at the table, we can ask him to bring it to us and he will, only getting a minimal amount of slobber on it in the process. Also, when he's done eating or drinking water, he'll go fetch a nearby towel and bring it to us so that we can wipe the extra food and water off his face. Even more impressively, he understands what "shoes" are, so if we tell him to go and fetch a shoe, he will bring one of the shoes sitting near the front door. (We are still working on getting him to bring the matching pair). The original owners taught him most of these tricks, although we've added a few of our own in the past year. Recently I started teaching him to put his toys back in the toy box at the end of the day.

While we were a bit nervous about adopting our first Puli, the Rescue Trust made everything as smooth as possible. After the initial meeting with the previous owners and Napoleon, it was only a few weeks before he was in his new forever home. Jim Moen and Cathy Prozini helped facilitate the meeting, and then, once we had settled in, came over to our house with their (now Hollywood famous!) dog Kesz to give us a hands on grooming lesson.

We're really happy we were able to add Napoleon to our family. We're grateful to the previous owners for doing such a great job raising him and the Rescue Trust for making it all happen. By Chad Hancock

THE PULI CLUB OF AMERICA'S

GUIDELINES FOR OWNERS/BREEDERS/EXHIBITORS

The Puli Club of America, Inc. in accordance with the objectives of its Constitution, expects its members to use these guidelines in establishing a standard of conduct for themselves as owners, breeders, sellers and exhibitors of Pulik. Every person who owns a Puli has an inherent responsibility to protect our breed. A. A PULI OWNER WILL PROVIDE ALL DOGS WITHIN THEIR KEEPING WITH:

· Appropriate food, water, health care and shelter. · Emotional requirements of attention, affection and appropriate training.

B. A PULI BREEDER WILL: · Be well-informed about the Standard of our breed. · Be aware that the purpose of breeding is to maintain or improve the quality of

the breed in accordance with the standard. · Use all available means such as knowledge of ancestors, and CHIC testing to

determine that breeding stock is free of inheritable disease. PCA required CHIC testing includes:

1. OFA or Penn Hip for hips 2. OFA for patella 3. OFA Degenerative Myelopathy (DNA test) 4. CERF (Canine Eye Registry)/OFA Eye Registry to be updated

every 3 years Additional tests that can be performed but are not required include:

· Obtain radiologically normal OFA/Penn Hip evaluation on all breeding stock before breeding.

· Use only stock which is itself sound in body and temperament. · Breed only when in a position to properly care for the bitch and litter,

recognizing that offspring might need housing for a considerable length of time.

· Not breed a bitch at her first season, before the age of 2, nor breed her more than 2 out of 3 consecutive heat periods, taking the health of the bitch into consideration at all times.

· Enter into all breeding arrangements with written contracts. · Keep accurate and thorough breeding records in full accordance with AKC

requirements. · Prevent all breedings that are not carefully planned and provide adequate

kenneling to prevent accidental or unplanned matings. · Insist that a visiting bitch be in the stud owner’s care and/or supervision

before, through and until completion of estrus, so that accidental mating to another stud not occur.

· Not substitute one stud for another without the knowledge and agreement of all parties.

· Pay careful attention to physical and emotional needs of puppies produced.

· Keep all puppies in the litter until they are a minimum of eight (8) weeks of age.

· Be aware at all times that producing puppies is a commitment and they remain responsible for puppies they produce throughout the lifetime of those dogs.

· Breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home.

C: PERSON SELLING A PULI WILL:

· Maintain a reasonable price within one’s locale, which price should also be compatible with national prices.

· Intelligently and honestly classify stock as show prospect, breeding prospect or pet.

· Provide AKC papers with limited registration if the dog is a potential detriment to the breed.

· Ascertain that the prospective owner has the knowledge, ability and facilities to properly care for a Puli.

· Give the buyer an honest appraisal of coat management, physical, mental and nutritional needs peculiar to the breed.

· Provide a pedigree of at least 3 generations, typed or written legibly. · Supply records to the buyer regarding immunization, feeding and instructions

for future care. · Release only puppies which are in good health and guarantee the health of the

puppy for a reasonable length of time. · Only release puppies after 8 weeks of age which is in keeping with most

animal welfare laws. · Provide written contractual proof of sale and guarantees. If registration

papers are not yet available, a bill of sale, giving names and registration numbers of sire and dam and date of birth are required.

only those professional handlers whose behavior is exemplary. · Help the novice exhibitor and breeder. Use kind, constructive and honest

criticism. · Display good sportsmanship and conduct themselves, whether at home,

traveling, at shows, or in hotels, in such a manner as to reflect credit upon the Puli Club of America, themselves and the Puli as a breed.

LITTER LISTINGS

Breeder Litter listings are accepted from Puli Club of America members in good standing. Litter listings here will also be listed on PCA's web site at www.Puliclub.org/pcabreeders.htm. “In order for a Litter to be listed on the Breeders page in Puli News and Puliclub.org, a breeder must be a general member of PCA in good standing. They must also pay whatever the current fee is for the listing. Proof of the required CHIC health tests for hips, patellas, DM and CERF/OFA Eye Reg-istry for sire and dam must be provided. CERF/OFA Eye Registry testing on sire and dam must have occurred within the last 3 years”

Zeal to produce champions or perpetuate a bloodline must never compromise a breeder's sensitivity to the quality of life that every Puli bred will experience. Breeders must consider the welfare of the Puli above personal gain or profit. Breeders have the responsibility to insure the welfare of all puppies they produce and remain responsible for those Pulik throughout their entire lifetime. Should the situation arise, breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home.

This wording has been added to insure that breeder's own the ultimate responsibility for the dogs they produce throughout their lifetime. The Puli Club of America Rescue Trust is not responsible for placing dogs bred by known people in the breed, and the Board felt that clear lines need to be established to advise everyone of their responsibility in the future. Should Rescue be advised of a Puli in need of re-homing their first obligation is to try to determine who the breeder is, and then contact that person in order that they can make the necessary

arrangements for their dog.

BREEDERS LIST

All obligations are those created by the buyer and seller, and PCA has no obligations to either buyer or seller. The Puli Club of America makes no assertions, claims or guarantees as to the breeders listed and each prospective buyer should talk to the breeder and ask the appropriate questions to their satisfaction. Key to Codes: P—Puppies offered for sale D—Adult Pulik are offered for sale S—Male Pulik at Stud A—Kennel visits by appointment I—Free general information The Puli Club of America just recently re-introduced the Breeders List. Not all our breeders have yet listed themselves on the List. The most current list can be found on the Puli Club of America web-site (http://puliclub.org) under the “Puppies/Rescue” tab. To be listed, a Breeder must have been a general member of the Puli Club of America for three years and be in good standing. They must sign the guidelines (see the prior page) and do pay an annual fee for listing.

Note: If the kennel name of the breeder is underlined, it indicates they have a website. Go to puliclub.org and then to the breeder listing. The kennel name is a link to the web-site.
