A team of scientists at the University of Maryland has discovered an unusual phenomenon with carbon nanotubes. When electric current is run through the tubes, objects nearby heat up while the nanotubes themselves stay cool, like a toaster that burns bread without getting hot. The team believes that understanding this phenomenon could lead to new ways of building computer processors that can run at higher speeds without overheating.

According to Kamal Baloch, one of the scientists in this research, the phenomenon has been observed at the nanoscale and is completely contrary to our intuition and knowledge of “Joule heating” at larger scales – for example, in things like a toaster. “Joule heating” dictates that an electrical current will cause travelling electrons to bounce off the atoms of a metal wire, making them vibrate in place. These vibrations create heat, and any conducting wire should show the effect.

Carbon nanotubes are known to conduct electricity like nanoscale metallic wires and so the scientists expected to see the same effect when they passed current through a carbon nanotube. However, the nanotube’s electrons are bouncing off of something, but not its atoms. Somehow, the atoms of the neighboring materials – the silicon nitride substrate – are vibrating and getting hot instead.

The scientists have developed a technique in the lab called electron thermal microscopy, which maps where heat is generated in nanoscale electrical devices, to observe the effect of the current on a nanotube. They expected to see heat traveling along the length of the nanotube to metal contacts attached to it. Instead, the heat seemed to jump directly to the silicon nitride substrate beneath, heating it up while leaving the nanotube relatively cold. They believe that the nanotube’s electrons are creating electrical fields due to the current, and the substrate’s atoms are directly responding to those fields.

The remote Joule heating effect could have far reaching implications for computing technology. What currently limits the performance of a computer’s processor is the speed at which it can run, and what limits the speed is the fact that it gets too hot. If the waste heat can be eliminated more effectively, then the processor will run faster.

Automobile development and design today tends to take environmental concern into greater account. Apparently, top automakers have been seeking to bring fuel-efficient and eco friendly vehicles, such as ECO-car with a light-weigth stucture or idling stop system. So-called hybrid cars even run on gasoline in combination with alternative fuel like electric cells. Further, electric cars have been innovated in order to reduce air and noise pollution in heavy traffic areas. Despite green qualities, electric cars cannot compete with conventional cars in terms of performance, partly due to slow power supply of the electric battery and corresponding low speed.

To solve the problem, researchers at North Carolina State University, USA, have studied how to turn a capacitor into a new power source capable of releasing large amount of energy rapidly. As general capacitors have a very low energy storage capacity, the researchers have combined polymer polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) with chlorotrifluorethylene (CTFE) as the capacitor’s core material. This enables it to store up to 7 times more energy than those currently in use. Like batteries, a capacitor can store and release energy, in this case electric energy. Its structure comprises a pair of conductive plates coupled with dielectric materials, such as plastic, paper or rubber. The capacitor is charged when there is an induced potential difference between a conductive plate and a dielectric plate, resulting in its polarized state. Once discharged, the capacitor will return to an unpolarized state, which in turn induces a potential difference and thus electric energy. Such reactions in the process are synchronized, thereby enabling the capacitor to releasing large volume of electricity in a flash. This makes it overcome a slower-performance battery that is generally charged and discharged by a chemical reaction between electrodes and solution.

The research makes a major breakthrough in the utilization of alternative energy. With it, electric cars can be further developed and become on par with petrol-based cars, or even with F1s. Moreover, whenever high-performance electric cars are in mass production, we will live a happier life with less-polluted urban air and cleaner cities.

Many people might think of Facebook as a social network for communication among friends and a platform to access a variety of entertainment only. But with its increasing popularity, Facebook has become a new marketing channel for many

businesses, which have enjoyed a large number of fans following their movement and news about new products and services. As the number of Facebook users grows more and more, smart marketers need to know how to utilize this popular social network to their advantage.

A market research team at Chadwick Martin Bailey, supported by Constant Contact, has conducted a study on the behavior of consumers who are Facebook users. Data were collected from 1,491 consumers, age 18 and above, in the United States, and have shown that most consumers will buy a product of a brand and recommend their friends to follow that brand after they become a fan. The percentage of users who interact with their favorite brands on Face book is 34%, far more than other social networks. And these are the 10 facts about consumer behavior on Facebook that today’s marketers need to know: 1. People interact with their favorite brands on Facebook far more

than other social networks. 2. 56% of fans say they are more likely to recommend a brand to a

friend after becoming a fan. 3. 51% of consumers say they are more likely to buy a product since

becoming a fan. 4. 52% of online users spend at least one hour a week on Facebook. 5. 76% of people have never “un-liked” a brand. 6. 77% of consumers interact with brands through reading brands’

posts and newsfeeds. 7. 78% of people who “like” brands on Facebook like fewer than 10

brands. 8. 58% of users “like” a brand because they are a customer. 9. 45% of Facebook users’ time is spent in the newsfeed.10. 69% of Facebook users want to hear from some brands more than

others.

As Facebook is easy to use and available twenty-four seven and can be accessed from different devices, it is no surprise that this social network is far more popular than its rivals and has become today’s main portal for connecting brands with consumers. What happens is when consumers become fans on Facebook, more than half of them become customers as they develop good relations with these brands.

For businesses who own these brands, knowing the consumer behavior on social networks will help them market their products better and enable them to develop and improve their products that can better suit their customers’ needs. Petroleum Review and OutlookThe WTI price continuously rose from the end of Q2 to the middle of Q3 of 2012, after dropping below US$90 per barrel in June. The price eventually bounced back to be above US$90 per barrel in August, mainly due to the supply concern from EU’s oil embargo on Iran fully coming into effect on July 1. Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, thus thwarting the export through the strait. In addition, there was a protest by workers at an oil rig in Norway that continued for over two weeks and a fire and an explosion in August at a Chevron refinery in Richmond, which has a production capacity of 245,000 barrels per day, or about one-eighth of California’s total production capacity. In late August, there was another fire at the Amuay refinery in Paraguana Refining Complex in Venezuela, the largest oil producer of South Africa with a production capacity of 645,000 barrels per day. The fire affected the reserves – Gasoline/Naphtha at 147,000 barrels per day, Jet at 170,000 barrels per day and fuel oil at 133,000 barrels per day. The refinery is expected to close down for maintenance for one to two months. Moreover, the WTI price strengthened as a result of natural disasters – floods in China and storms in the Gulf of Mexico. A supply of 1.31 million barrels per day from the Gulf of Mexico was wiped away. However, the price did not rise much as production in the Gulf of Mexico resumed in September after Hurricane Isaac was gone and as

the Norwegian oil rig could settle a wage agreement with the protesters. Meanwhile, the demand also shrank because of a fragile global economy, starting with Europe. The EU’s PMI dropped to 45.1 in June and then to 44.1 in July, the lowest in three years. The unemployment rate hit a newrecordat11.21%andtheEurozone’sindustrial production shrank for the 11th consecutive month in July while production output and new orders decreased. Moody’s Investor Service has cut credit ratings of Italy’s two largest banks, Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit, from A3 to Baa2, further signaling an economic shrinkage as indicated by the PMI announced by HSBC. China’s manufacturing dropped continuously from 49.3 in July to 47.6 in August, the lowest since March 2009. Although the US’s PMI slightly picked up from 51.4 in July to 51.9 in August and growthrateinQ2roseby1.7%–higherthanpreviouslyexpectedat1.5%,overallthe US economy growth is still slow until a new presidential election is held in November, judging from the Fed’s announcement that it might issue new economic stimulus plans, if necessary, to lower the unemployment rate, which is at8.3%atpresent.Fromaforementionedfactors, the crude oil prices in Q3 will slightly rise, with the WTI price moving in the range of US$90-100 per barrel. Still, there are important factors to watch closely in September. These include the Fed’s Q3 meeting and the issue of new measures to boost trust before having an election in November; the European Central Bank’s meeting and details about buying Spain’s and Italy’s government bonds; the US’ plan to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve; and the visit by debt inspectors from EC, ECB and IMF to Greece. The Naphtha price in Asia rose continuously after a sharp drop at the end of Q2 as a result of weakened crude oil prices, the thin demand from the downstream market that made sev-eral crackers lower their production and the supply from the Middle East that continued to enter the market. Then, the price rose continuously around US$100 per ton each month thanks to rising crude oil prices, an increased supply from crackers in Asia that resumed their

operations after maintenance shutdown and rising demand for gasoline as the driving season began. The Naphtha price at the closing of Q3 is expected to slightly increase due to high crude oil prices, but a more relaxed supply after the maintenance season is over needs to be considered.

Ethylene and Propylene prices in Asia declined at the closing of Q2, pressured by the downward trend of feedstock prices, both for crude oil and Naphtha, that made converters and traders slow down new orders in order to observe the price direction. Meanwhile, the global economy continued to be sluggish, particularly due to the debt crisis in Europe, which is the main export market for China, leading to thin demand. However, the price bounced back in Q3 thanks to increased feedstock prices for both crude oil and Naphtha. Also, part of the supply disappeared from the market due to natural disasters in various countries, including a typhoon in Northeast Asia. For example, Formosa had to pause its production abruptly for over ten days because of an electrical outage, resulting in a price hike, even though the global economy was sluggish. The Ethylene price is expected to swing in the range of US$1,100-1,200 per ton and the Propylene price to move in the range of US$1,200-1,300 per ton at the closing of Q3. Prices of all kinds of Polymers in Asia increased thanks to Ethylene and Propylene price hikes. Also, demand grew as factor ies increased their inventories for the production season in Q3, particularly the demand for LLDPE to support the production season of agricultural film in China. Meanwhile, the supply was indirectly affected by natural disasters that hindered plastic granule production and transport routes in many countries. the end of Q2 and the price bounced back in the middle of Q3. However, the global economic crisis was an important factor that kept prices from rising too much. The demand at the downstream market remained thin, partly because of the fasting season of the Muslims, who const i tute a major i ty of the Asian market. Also, the purchasing behavior has changed to buying just enough for production instead of stocking to avoid price fluctuations. Prices of all plastic granules are expected to rise slightly, with those of HDPE, LLDPE and LDPE Film SEA moving in the range of US$1,300-1,400 per ton and that of PP moving in the range of US$1,420-1,500 per ton at the closing of Q3. Even though this is the production season for the New Year holiday season, which is when there is high demand for plastic products, and the time to increase inventories before the Chinese national day in early October, the fragile global e c o n o m y w i l l b e t h e f a c t o r t h a t continuously pressures the market until the closing of Q3.

The PS price in South-east Asia picked up

continuously in the same way as Polymer prices, due to increased demand for the production season in China and for the manufacturing of products particularly for the New Year celebrations at the end of the year. New orders were made to increase inventories in the middle of Q3 – slightly later than last year. Also, the PS price benefited from increased feedstock prices, for Benzene, Styrene and Ethylene. It is expected to rise slightly at the closing of Q3 thanks to the rising feedstock prices. However, the price might not increase too much as there are worries about the global economic crisis, particularly the debt crisis in Europe, which will affect downstream orders. This problem may ease up after the implementation of ECB’s bond-buying program to help keep down borrowing costs of crisis-hit countries. The price of GPPS CFR SEA is expected to swing in the range of US$1,550-1,600 per ton at the end of Q3.

Sharing Together at Ban Rajawadee The Petrochemical Business Department, the EPS Plant and domestic agents of IRPC together organized a CSR activity called “Sharing Together” at Ban Rajawadee, a home for mentally handicapped boys in Nonthaburi province. Mr. Supachoke Liamkaeo, President of PTT Polymer Marketing Company Limited, and Mr. Boontuck Wangcharoen, President of TMB Bank, together signed an agreement to continue their financial cooperation of the past two years: the “TMB Supply Chain Solutions” program. Under this program, which aims at strengthening PTTPM’s business by reinforcing its agents, TMB will give PTTPM financial benefits that include the ability to issue a Clean Letter of Guarantee on OD for Buyer and factoring.Mr. Supachoke says PTTPM expects to generate not less than 70 billion baht in income from selling plastic resins in 2013, increasing from 63 billion baht in 2011. This financial cooperation will enhance the company’s agents and lead to sustainable business

PTTPM & Thai KK join hands for development of 100% degradable PBS-coated paper Mr. Supachoke Liamkaeo, President of PTT Polymer Marketing Company Limited, and Mr. Chawaeng Uvimolchai, President of Thai KK Industry Company Limited, together signed an MOU for the commercial

developmentof100%degradablePBS-coatedpaper.Thecooperationmarksanimportantstepfor the development of bioplastic products by PTT and local producers, both enhancing Thailand’s production capability of goods made of PBS (polybutylene succinate) plastic and promoting Thai KK and PTT’s leadership in the bioplastic industry. Mr. Supachoke notes that the cooperation will bring forth not only excellent products, but also a great beginning for both companies to share knowledge and establish good relations, which will benefit PTT’s bioplastic business on an international level. The MOU signing ceremony was held on September 4, 2012, at the Vimarnthong Room, Montien Riverside Hotel.

Building youth leaders’ awareness: Rak Thai Rak Talay On July 27-29, 2012, IRPC Public Company Limited in cooperation with the 1st Naval Area Command launched the “Rak Thai Rak Talay” youth leadership camp at Signal Battalion, Marine Division in Chonburi to celebrate the 60th Birthday Anniversary of HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. The “Rak Thai Rak Talay” youth camp, an integrated project has been organized for the 3rd consecutive year, aiming to help the society for the conservation and restoration of the marine environment. About 160 students studying in Mattayom 3 from schools in Rayong and Sattaheep District of Chonburi participated in this camp which they have gained knowledge and understanding of ecosystems, and awareness of the participation in the conservation of marine resources through both lectures and field work demonstration by experts in each field. In addition, Vice Admiral Chumpon Wongwekin, commander of the 1st Naval Area Command, and Khun Atikom Terbsiri, President of IRPC Public Company Limited jointly chaired the certification ceremony and closed the project. The organizer expected the youth will bring the obtained knowledge and experience to further build conservation network in the school and their community.

IRPC, GE join hand to develop capability of CHP and EBSM plant Khun Atikom Terbsiri, President of IRPC Public Company Limited and Khun Nat Hutanuwatr, Country Executive of GE Energy jointly signed a Contractual Service Agreement for Gas Turbine maintenance of the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) to ensure IRPC’s stability in the production of heat and power, to reduce the risk from operation of maintenance, and to reduce environmental pollution to the

surrounding community as well. On the same occasion, Khun Sahaschai Panichapong, Senior Executive Vice President Petrochemical & Refinery Business Unit, and Mr. Mark Tiew, Regional Director of GE Water jointly signed a MoU for Collaborative Work and Business Development on Styrex Green Technologies, as a result of the success of the development of substance that prevents chemical reaction or Inhibitor in EBSM Plant which the two parties formed the collaboration since 2009. The signing of MoU will lead to the collaboration of business development in the future. The ceremony was held at Grand Hyatt Erawan on July 17, 2012.
