29 Years of Excellence

Frederick Irwin Anglican School is one of the oldest Independent schools in the Peel Region. The School opened in February 1991 with 175 students and in 2019 has over 1600 students cross two campuses.

The School is a co-educational, Kindergarten to Year 12 day school, serving Mandurah, Rockingham, Pinjarra, Waroona and surrounding districts. The original Meadow Springs Campus is located on a 17 hectare site bounded by Oakmont Avenue and Gordon Road, Mandurah. Our new Kindergarten to Year 6 Halls Head Campus, which opened Term 1 2018, is a 4.2 hectare site situated in Seascapes and bordered by Karon Vista and Waxflower Vista. The School Council, comprising representatives of the Anglican Church, parents and the community, set the strategic direction of the School and is responsible for its overall development and management. The Principal is responsible for the operations of the School and reports regularly to School Council. The Business Manager is the Secretary to the School Council. Frederick Irwin is one of fourteen schools of the Anglican Schools Commission (Inc).

The School’s grounds and facilities have been developed considerably since foundation, with the most recent additions of the Primary Nature Playground (on both campuses), Year 7 Transition Centre and the Rush Chapel.

The School continually aims to provide excellent facilities to further academic, cultural, sporting and musical for our students.

SCHOOL AND CHURCH

Frederick Irwin is located in the Diocese of Bunbury but is not affiliated with any particular Anglican parish; however, links are maintained with parishes from which the School draws students. All students attend Christian Studies lessons and Christian values are stressed in all areas of the curriculum.

The Christian ethos is the foundation of school life and a Chaplain is employed full time in the School to encourage students to be thoughtful and considerate of others, respectful of differences and aware of their own personal worth as individuals.

Worship is given great importance, not only in formal School Assemblies, which are held regularly and include Anglican observances, but also in smaller groups and in innovative ways which appeal to younger children and adolescents, so that it is a natural and enjoyable part of the life of the school community. The School Chapel is available for prayer and quiet contemplation.

PROSPECTUS 4

PASTORAL CARE AND THE HOUSE SYSTEM

Pastoral Care underpins all that we do at Frederick Irwin, and as such the School recognises and respects the individuality of each child by requiring each teacher to be charged with pastoral care.

Before a child starts at the School he/she is allocated to a House. The six (6) Houses are Arnold (Teal), Barrett (Purple), Ellis (Marl Grey), Gordon (Green), Jamieson (Blue) and Rose (Red).

In the Primary Schools, the Head of Primary, Deputy Head of Primary and class teachers take pastoral care responsibility for the students and teachers are assigned to a particular House. House Coordinators are responsible for organising House activities within the Primary School.

In Secondary School, each student is a member of a House Group which is assigned its own teacher. The House Group meets each morning and ideally the same teacher will remain with the group for much of their secondary schooling.

Heads of House have pastoral responsibility for each House, in which their role is to provide support for all aspects of students’ life at school by helping them to achieve academically whilst overseeing their social and emotional health and well-being, and to be the contact person for parents to discuss any concerns regarding their children.

The Principal and Deputy Principals also undertake pastoral care within their roles, while a Psychologist is also employed to work across the School.

Page 6: PROSPECTUS - media.digistormhosting.com.au

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Student leadership, mentoring and providing positive role models are important in all aspects of our School.

At the Meadow Springs Primary School, each House has two House Captains, a boy and a girl from Year 6. Year 6 students also have the opportunity to become Junior Councillors through the City of Mandurah, representing the School through leadership and governance workshops.

The Halls Head Primary School has one House Captain for each House, but this structure will develop in line with the Mead-ow Springs Campus as the School grows.

In the Secondary School, our senior students in Year 12 can be selected as School Prefects or House Seniors. They provide support and leadership throughout the School and also to their House through House Councils. Year 11 students can be selected as House Assistants in support of the House System. Selected Year 11 students also provide support and leadership to our Year 7 students as Peer Support Leaders.

Student leadership, mentoring and providing positive role models are important in all aspects of our School.

Primary students have access to eBoards in every class, iPads which are incorporated into lessons, and specialised Digital Technology classes.

With the introduction of the Bring Your Own Device programme, Secondary students are able to access workable documents, email teachers, monitor their homework and assessments, and research their assignments while in class. Students also attend ‘CyberSafe’ interactive lessons to complement their online knowledge and behaviour.

Additionally, parents of students at the School are encouraged to download the free Skoolbag App, which sends out alerts and notices in real time.

Seqta Engage, the Parent Portal, is accessible through the school website, under ‘Parent and Student Login’, and parents are able to access reports, teacher comments, student timetables and campus events.

As Digital Technologies continually progress, Frederick Irwin aims to stay at the forefront of school technology innovation, for the benefit of all students, staff and parents.
