EATING TIPS FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL CHIDREN

School age is the perfect time for children to learn

about healthy food, bodies and activity. This is the

time they start a busy social life, have pocket money

and begin to help choose their own lifestyle. Children

of this age learn quickly and are also influenced by

their friends and popular trends.

Children need a wide variety of foods for a well-

balanced diet. The amount of physical activity they

have in a day will be an important part of how much

they need to eat. When children are busy and active,

snacking is important to keep energy levels high. A

healthy morning snack at break (recess) and one after

school are usually needed each day.

Breakfast is important

It is important to encourage breakfast. A good night’s

sleep followed by food in the morning helps your child

to stay active and concentrate at school. It also means

your child is less likely to be too hungry during the

morning and it can help with performance at school.

Be a role model and let your child see you eat

breakfast too. A bowl of cereal with milk and fresh

fruit is a great starter for the whole family.

Refer to the PHKI Poster “Parents…Get Straight A’s

with Healthy Breakfast”

School lunches

Many private schools in Nigeria have a canteen that

offers a range of food choices. Most schools do not

follow any particular guidelines to encourage healthy

food choices. The food your child chooses might be

high in cost and energy, but low in nutrients

sometimes. An alternative is a packed lunch from

home, which is a great way for your child to learn about

healthy food and to help with preparation.

School lunches – foods to limit

Highly processed, sugary, fatty and salty foods should

only make up a very small part of your child’s diet.

Foods to limit in everyday school lunches include:

Processed meats such as ham and pressed

chicken

Chips, sweet biscuits, and breakfast bars

Fruit bars

Juices and soft drinks.

Water Works D over half of your body is made up of water! Just like a plant, you need plenty of water to stay alive. You may not know it, but your body uses water to do almost everything-like eating, breathing and moving your arms and legs - even your blood is based on water! It’s important to drink lots of water every day to refill all the water you use!

DON’T DRY UP - DRINK MORE WATER!! Keep water cold in the fridge

Try sugar free flavored or sparkling waters

Add a slice of lemon or even mix in a little bit of

your favorite juice

Carry a water bottle around with you, for when

you’re on the go.

Understand the basics of nutrition There are three major nutrients that you eat every day. This table will show you what they are, how many calories are in one gram of each, what their primary function in the body is and what foods they are found in.

Nutrient Cal/gram Function Foods Found In

Protein 4

It is the body's main structural nutrient.

All muscles and tissues are made from protein.

The immune system uses protein.

Eggs, meats, fish, beans, dairy products, soy.

Carbohydrates 4

This is preferred energy source of the body.

Carbs supply fast energy to the muscles for activity.

Grains, pastas, cereals, breads, vegetables, fruits, corn syrup, anything with sugar in it.

Fat 9

This is the energy storage nutrient in the body.

Fats are also used as a source of energy for low-intensity activity.

All oils (e.g. olive, peanut, canola, vegetable), butter, margarine, meats, junk food.

tunde,

I went to a nutrition and fitness class at my

school. Afterwards the nurse examined me

and talked to me about my weight. She said

I needed to learn how to take better care of

myself.

I knew I was a little overweight, but I never

really thought about it. In the group I

learned what choices I could make to eat

better and how important it is to exercise.

Also the word exercise used to make me think

that it would be tough and hard to do. I learned

that exercise can be fun and good for you at

the same time. I used exercise bands to stretch

and move and that was my favorite part of the

class. I also learned that eating fruit and

drinking more water is good for you and you

don’t have to eat low fat food or fat free food

all the time to lose weight! Learning how to take

better care of my body helps me feel better

about myself.
