Welcome to Harrow Arts Centre

2014 marks 100 years since the start of the First World War and Harrow Arts Centre will be commemorating this significant milestone in world history. Our centenary tribute will include the unforgettable story of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. Stephen MacDonald’s acclaimed play Not About Heroes paints a vivid and moving picture of the friendship of two of the finest ‘Great War’ poets through the letters and poems of these two men. We will also be remembering the courage of those affected by the conflict with morale boosting songs from the early 20th century. Sounds from Wartime is a musical afternoon featuring hit songs from World War I and II such as We’ll Meet Again and Land Of Hope And Glory.

If you’re wondering what to do with the kids during half term, we have an entertaining Half Term fun week filled with workshops, films and sing along shows to keep them entertained. If you fancy treading the boards at HAC yourself and stepping into the limelight then why not audition for our winter pantomime? Open auditions for Jack and the Beanstalk are being held in August - visit our website for more details! Do get in touch with any queries or suggestions for our programme at [email protected]

Taming of the Shrew

The Swinging Sixties: London is quickly gaining worldwide attention for setting trends and creating icons. The world’s best known tale of the battle between the sexes nestles among money, music and beauty in a setting where seduction and exclusivity are the words of the day.

In the shadows, three criminal dynasties are drawn together as suitors vie to woo and wed the wealthy daughters of gangland powerhouse Baptista / Minola. The catch? The eldest is as vicious as the youngest is beautiful.

Cue a riotous struggle for love and power as Immersion Theatre transport one of Shakespeare’s most controversial comedies to 60’s London where Quadrophenia meets the Krays in this larger-than-life, darkly humorous revival of their critically-acclaimed 2011 production.

Harrow Art Society:The Art of Still Life14 - 25 OctoberThe Gallery at HAC & the Corridor Galleries

An exhibition of work from the students of both Cheryl Gould’s Life Drawing Class and Roy Rogers Oil Painting class.

In Cheryl’s well established Friday classes students range from beginners to practiced artists who love to study and draw the figure from life each week, learning about line, form, composition and anatomy. Cheryl encourages her students to use a variety of media, pencils, charcoal, pastels, inks, acrylic paint etc.

Roy teaches all aspects of oil painting in his Tuesday classes. Roy’s students range from complete beginners to professional artists. The subject matter is diverse - the main aim of the class is to develop students own creative ideas and skills through the medium of oil painting, thus expressing their personal ‘language’.

Stephen’s latest body of work is a collection of paintings combining delicate glazes of oil paint worked over spray paint on a variety of surfaces, such as wood, metal and linen. The process of working with the two contrasting types of materials is integral in the artist’s conceptual concerns; the wild spontaneity of vivid spray paint, direct from the can, overlaid with careful glazes of oil paint delicately applied to create a multi-layered image. His choice of bright, seductive and saccharine colours serves to attract onlookers, whilst expressing serious ecological concerns.

underlying concept which resonates throughout the whole body of work. The themes involved in the show explore the relationship between artwork and the gallery space through the use of pieces imbibed with a sense of structural simplicity and conceptualism.

The opportunity for an exhibition with three different people may not be too unusual. However, that changes when you appreciate the combination. The first, an eminent painter, has been doing just that for the best part of 85 years. The other two are best friends - one being the son of the artist. As young children, they would sit together and look on with fascination as the oil paint was applied to the canvas. This was a part of their development that led to their own artistic interest, both becoming known internationally in their own fields of Photography and Sculpture.
