This fantastic multi-use centre designed by world renownedarchitect Will Alsop offers a series of airy, interconnected, flexiblespaces which make The Public the region’s most exciting newvenue. Our gallery features exhibitions by local, national andinternational artists.

The Public is ideal for workshops, conferences, events, live musicgigs, exhibitions, meetings, award ceremonies, trade shows,charity galas, weddings and parties. There is a fully fitted theatrefeaturing state of the art audio visual facilities, several bespokeconference areas or rooms and a cafe bar to cater your event.

The Public is 15 minutes from Birmingham city centre by car(a mile from junction 1 of the M5) and Metro (West BromwichCentral). There is adjacent parking both outdoor and multi-storey.There is disabled parking on New Street adjacent to The Publicalong with a drop off point at the entrance to the building.

The building is fully accessible with hearing loop system inthe main conference spaces, lift access across all floors anda commitment to support access for all.

During October half term (25 October – 31 October) the interactive artworks and galleries are open Monday – Sunday, 10am-6pmThe Public will be closed for Christmas on the following days: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, 27 and 28 December. The interactive artworks and galleries are open on 29, 30 and 31 December. The Public will also be closed on Monday 3 January.

We’ve brought you a great programme of activities showcasing the best in local art and entertainments alongside national and international artists.

The Public has gone from strength to strength throughout the year and is rapidly becoming a great place for both daytime and evening activities – somewhere to learn, create, experience, delight and most of all a place for all members of the family to have fun. We now accept all major credit and debit cards for ticket bookings. The building also has superfast wi-fi in all public areas!

Over the next few months this outstanding programme will be bringing a great mix of art, music and family activities especially during the October half term and the lead-up to Christmas. Join us at Arts Fest in Birmingham City Centre on Saturday 11 September and Sunday 12 September 2010.

ExhiBiTiONSDon’t miss the chance to see The Fall into Paradise by leading video artist Bill Viola or the A for Animation exhibitions bringing you the best from this exciting

art form. October sees displays from local photography archives supporting Black History Month and the highly regarded photographer Martin Parr returns to The Public with his Black Country Stories.

ENTERTAiNMENTFrom the high-energy Latin dance craze Zumba to a gentle afternoon of tea dancing our programme offers a range of events for everybody. Two acts return to The Public following their sell out gigs last year so be sure not to miss popular Comedian Shazia Mirza or the UK’s leading tribute act Kings Ov Leon. Muso Music Month October features an amazing selection of three of the world’s foremost and influential musicians in their genres– Mouse on the Keys, Erik Mongrain, and Catfish Keith.

SEASONAl FuNAs Christmas approaches, why not come to The Public for a

festive and party atmosphere at one of the region’s most inspiring venues.

Finally, don’t miss our family activities throughout October, the return of Photo Booth, the Human Photocopier and the chance to get festive in our do-it-yourself grotto throughout December.

ThE FAll iNTO PARADiSEBill ViOlA(until 17 October)A rare chance to see work by the world’s leading figure in contemporary video art. The Fall into Paradise is part of a series inspired by Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. This video projection visualises the transformation of the lovers from material to spiritual beings. This exhibition coincides with the UK premier of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde at Birmingham Town Hall (23 September).

AN EyEFul OF SOuND – SAMANThA MOORE(until 26 September)Funded by a Wellcome Trust Arts Award, Samantha Moore’s 10 minute documentary looks at audio-visual synaesthesia – when people experience sounds as colours and shapes.

ThE KNiTTiNG SAlON: A PROJECT By TREVOR PiTT13- 31 OctoberThe mobile Knitting Salon designed by Kate Pemberton includes 8 knitted benches made by groups throughout the UK. Enjoy the benches and share your knitting skills whilst chatting to others.

Experienced local knitters will be on hand to share their skills. Learn ‘how to knit’, brush up your skills or just come and have a natter.

BlACK COuNTRy STORiES – MARTiN PARR(10 November – 23 January) One of Britain’s most influential photographers returns to The Public, having spent a year documenting life in the Black Country.ShOW ME A SECRET(10 November – 23 January)Martin Parr worked with students and tutors from Sandwell College’s Photography Department and has selected some of the best work to be featured as part of this exhibition.

STiTChES AND hOS AT ThE KNiTTiNG SAlONSaturday 23 October, 11am-4pm For one day only Sara Fowles and the crew of notorious knitters from the Birmingham based knitting group ‘Stitches and Hos’ will take over The Knitting Salon. Come and join in the fun, they’ll have you ‘in stitches’.

We’ve developed an ongoing programme of great music for all tastes with our regular Seamless, Soul and Motown, Jazz and Dine and Acoustic Bites gigs and performances. From September, we’re proud to introduce Live Box as part of this programme – blending hip hop, jazz and live beats.

KiNGS OV lEON(Saturday 11 September)The amazing UK Tribute band Kings_Ov_Leon make a welcome return following last year’s sell out evening.

uK CiGAR BOx GuiTAR FESTiVAl(Saturday 16 October)Join the Cigar Box Revolution for a whole day dedicated to this dynamic musical madness. Learn how cigar box instruments are made and experience the phenomenon of music using ‘found objects’ with some of the UK and Europe’s foremost performers.

MOuSE ON ThE KEyS(Saturday 2 October)This Japanese instrumental rock band have a unique style and sound. Drums, pianos and keyboards combines the sense of urgency from rock, hardcore and heavy metal with contemporary classical, jazz and various dance music. ERiK MONGRAiN(Tuesday 19 October) Famed for his distinctive lap tapping technique, this self-taught musician has appeared several times on Later with Jools Holland. With over 5 million views of his internet video ‘Air Tap’, Erik produces memorable melodies and mesmerising live performances with great

talent and the ability to recall and execute complicated patterns, timings and rhythms. Together we can uncover some of music’s most fascinating secrets, be it rock, classical, salsa or jazz. No previous relevant education is required, just a passion for music! ‘hOPE’- A BENEFiT CONCERT FOR ViCTiMS OF ThE PAKiSTAN FlOODSSaturday 16 October, 7.30pm-lateAs a result of the devastating events in Pakistan, the ‘hope’ charity event will help raise money for Birmingham based DEC partner charity Islamic Relief who are helping people affected by the Pakistan floods.

There will be a variety of performances on the night. including live music, comedy, story telling and poetry – a great event for all ages. Family tickets are available in advance at £18 for 2 adults and up to 3 children.

CulTuRAl DANCE FESTSunday 31 October, 2pm-6pm Cultural Dance Fest comes to The Public at the end of October bringing fun and entertainment for all the family.

There will be a drama production and a variety of dance workshops, stalls and activities to tickle your fancy. Two dance performances will take place at 3.30pm and 5pm to showcase the talents of several dance acts and people involved in the 8-week Dance Delight programme.

You will also be able to get involved in activities from rangoli, henna and diwali card making to diva and aarti designing.

Tickets are £3 per person or £10 for a family of four people, plus food and drink.

iSlAM AWARENESS WEEK Monday 1 November – Friday 5 November, 10am – 6pm, freeIslam Awareness Week aims to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the Muslim Faith. The exhibition at The Public promotes a greater understanding of Islamic artefacts and texts as well as being an excellent opportunity for schools and young people to get involved.
