PGCE Secondary School Experience 2 Weekly Review & Targets Booklet 1 The Birmingham City University teacher: committed, creative, confident Introduction During your PGCE Secondary course you will have targets set for you by mentors and tutors. You are also likely to set yourself targets. There is a danger that you are overwhelmed with targets from a number of different sources, and that these target cause confusion as you seek to determine which target should take priority. It is good for your sense of progress and achievement if you can demonstrate that you are meeting targets and moving forward to meet new challenges in your professional development. This booklet is intended to bring together the targets, from various sources, for each week of your school experience into one place. By doing so duplication should be avoided and you will have better control over meeting your targets. It is helpful for mentors and tutors to see the targets that you are working towards at any one time. It might be the case that mentors and tutors are able to space target out to support your progress and development more effectively. You should take responsibility for your own targets by collecting them into this booklet. There is one double page for each week of your School Experience 2. Below is an example of what the week’s targets might include. Day Source / Context Target / Action Teachers’ Standard Monday e.g. Discussion with SM e.g. Through observations, identify a number of ways in which teachers make their expectations clear to students 1b 1c Tuesday e.g. Following lesson observation e.g. Develop a wider range of behaviour management strategies by referring to the school’s system of sanctions and rewards and using the consequence system consistently and explicitly. 7a 7b Wednesday e.g. From “pink” feedback sheet e.g. Use the time while students are working to note down evidence of their learning. Do this for 4 or 5 students and use the information to help determine the success of the lesson. 2b 6b 6c Opposite the Target Page is the Weekly Review page which requires you to reflect on the progress that you have made with your targets during that week. During your weekly review meeting, mentors are asked to respond, identifying progress and offering support and guidance. Targets for the following week should be negotiated and written into the space indicated. These should provide the focus for the following week. The intention is that the targets that have been appropriately met are signed off and new priorities identified. All targets should be linked to the relevant Teacher’s Standards. It will be clear to see whether targets are being addressing and progress is being made as each successive page of the booklet is completed. Gathering targets together in this way will enable to you to chart your own professional progress more directly.
