The Cause of ConflictThe Cause of Conflict

• Yugoslavia was split up into many different ethnic groups.

• In 1992, hatred between the different ethnic groups eventually led to a civil war outbreak.

• The war mainly consisted of a three-way battle between the major powers (Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia).

UNPROFOR to the rescue!UNPROFOR to the rescue!

 

• In 1992 the UN deployed the united nations protection force (UNPROFOR) when they heard the conflict taking place in Yugoslavia.

• UNPROFOR consisted of roughly 40,000 soldiers from many different countries attempting to bring peace to the warring country.

• Soldiers were situated at the borders between the conflicting countries in attempt to uphold a cease-fire between them.

• During the Bosnian war, Canadian Major General Lewis MacKenzie opened the airport at Sarajevo to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

• Due to his efforts in Bosnia, Lewis MacKenzie became one of the greatest Canadian heroe's of Yugoslavia

The ResolutionThe Resolution

Yugoslavia flag as a peace symbol.

• By 1995, the UN had stopped the civil war in Yugoslavia.

• Canada and other countries withdrew their forces from UNPROFOR.

• Although the civil war is over, there are still a few forces left in Bosnia to watch over the armed conflict.
