279 A Paschal Sermon Given by Patriarch Pavle of Blessed Memory in the Year 2002 EDIOR’S NOE: Patriarch Pavle was the chie hierarch o the Serbian Orthodox Church at a time when many young people in Serbia, disillusioned both by the maniest ailures o Communism and by the emptiness o materialism and hedonism imported om the West, were returning to the Church. Te American-led NAO bombing o Serbia in 1999, during which Serbia’s youth saw the idol o happiness om the West all to dust along with the buildings o their capital city, only increased this infux o youth into the Church. Patriarch Pavle, as a true ather o his people, labored to make a home in the Church or these searching souls. He knew that young people were rebelling against the status quo or good reason, and he rejoiced when this rebellion set them on the path to the Heavenly Kingdom; but he also knew that, in the case o many, this rebellion was leading in the opposite direction—toward death and hell. In the ollowing Paschal sermon His Holiness addresses the condition o young people in his country—which o course is mirrored by the state o youth throughout the modern world—and points to what must be done or them and by them in order that they may share in Christ’s victory over death and hell, which He accomplished through His saving death and glorious Resurrection.
