Statement by the Parochial Church Council on the Conditions, Needs and Traditions of the Parish

Kirkby Ireleth is a rural parish in South Lakeland centred on the village of Kirkby in Furness. The church and churchyards are visited daily by members of the community and visitors, and there is active involvement in the school and activities and events within the village. There is also a Methodist Chapel and Church of Christ within the parish. Our Sunday congregation usually numbers around thirty and spans small children to the mature. There

is active lay involvement including a Reader, churchwardens, a sacristan, two organists, a choir, numerous sides-persons, readers & intercessors, a tower captain and ringers. Festival, occasional office and school services see the church full of regular and periodic attenders. There is a weekly JAM (Jesus And Me) lunch club facilitated by the churches and a weekly Youth Club organised by the Ulverston youth team and parents.

The parish of Kirkby Ireleth and the parish of Broughton and Duddon seek to appoint a priest who values the traditional and the contemporary and be able to:

promote the worship and mission of the church throughout the communities and help people grow in faith and the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ

value and develop current traditions and practice

Statement by the Parochial Church Council on the Conditions, Needs and Traditions of the Parish

Worship – Although we are a traditional rural parish, the congregation has embraced a variety of services for a number of years. Our services include Common Worship Communion, Service of the Word, Matins (midweek), seasonal services (e.g. All Souls, Christingle, Remembrance) and occasional offices. Robes and vestments are used by those leading services and the choir. Traditional and contemporary language are used within parish service booklets and weekly sheets. The organist leads the music for services and holds regular choir practices. There is a good stock of Complete Anglican Hymns Old & New, an effective sound system, microphones, CDs and projection facilities.

Ministry - The village looks forward to a new vicar but there is an increasing understanding of the changing role of clergy and a recognition of the contribution of the church community in maintaining the worship, pastoral care and maintenance of the buildings and churchyards.

Mission – The parish has developed links with neighbouring parishes and is currently working with other members of the Furness Deanery to identify a Mission Community within which it can actively participate.

Kirkby Ireleth Parish Mission Action Plan was reviewed for November 2016:

Where we are going – increased profile, presence and participation

in the life and mission of the Parish Church within the community and neighbouring communities

How will we get there - to identify opportunities to develop,

question and consider our faith in worship collectively and individually

to encourage all to live out their faith in their daily lives to demonstrate that as a church, we are a living caring community which

reaches out to all within the parish community and beyond

What we need to do – to review collective and individual worship to identify future service

plans, groups, training to encourage all to live out their faith in their daily lives to find a minister who will guide us in our worship and mission and

further develop the life and work of St Cuthbert’s in our Mission Community

Kirkby Ireleth lies in the south west of Cumbria in the Furness peninsular overlooking the Duddon estuary. Approximately twelve hundred people live in Kirkby and the surrounding hamlets.

The nearest towns, Ulverston and Dalton, are each approximately five miles away. The A595 passes through the village giving access to Barrow in Furness to the south and the west coast of Cumbria. There is also a railway station (West Coast line, Cumbria) and limited bus service. The M6 is thirty-five to forty-five minutes away.

The village is a pleasant mix of farmland, low lying marsh and moorland. The Vicarage affords magnificent views across the Duddon estuary, Black Combe and the Coniston Fells. Within the community there is the Burlington Church of England VC Primary School, two garages, a village shop and post office, three pubs and a modern medical centre. A seasonal caravan site of around two hundred static caravans and chalets is located within farmland south west of the Burlington Slate Quarry.

In addition to St Cuthbert’s Church there is a Methodist Chapel at Marshside and the Church of Christ at Wallend. The P.C.C. is also responsible for The Village Hall, Beckside, an old school building that has been used as a hall for community use and is owned by the Diocese. Within the parish there is also Kirkby Community Centre which is situated adjacent to St Cuthbert’s and affords football and cricket pitches, children’s play area, bowling green, a recently installed MUGA pitch, changing rooms and toilets accessible to the public. There is also a Community Hall within the hamlet of Grizebeck.

There is a wealth of organisations and groups for many ages and interests which meet at the various halls, churches, pubs and homes. An overview of these is available within the annual Parish Calendar. A monthly parish magazine, The Caller, aims to offer a topical letter, information from all the churches, the community and items of interest. These are collated

and published by St. Cuthbert’s and distributed to all households in the parish by community distributors.

St Cuthbert’s dates from the twelfth century and is listed as Grade 2*. It is a traditional stone-built church with oak pews and choir stalls. The Norman doorway, two very old oak chests and a door depicting St Cuthbert’s life are some of the features of our church.

The nave and north aisle were re-roofed in 2007-8 following significant fund raising and grants from such as English Heritage, WREN and Churches Trust. The vestry is housed on the ground floor of the tower in which there is a fine peal of

eight bells and clock. The clock face has recently been re-gilded and the mechanism restored. The funding for this work has been achieved through community fund raising and donations. A faculty to further improve accessibility and

facilities within the building includes outer porch doors, the repositioning of the font, development of a play area for children and to carpet the nave. This work has commenced. There is a cold water outside tap and the side vestry area is currently used as a storage, work and kitchen area. The June 2017 quinquennial does not highlight any significant immediate work. Car parking, other than street parking, and toilet facilities are located at the neighbouring Community Centre which is a few minutes away.

The Vicarage is situated on School Road approximately half a mile away from the church. A 1960’s detached four bedroomed gas centrally heated house set in a mature well-maintained garden with panoramic views across the Duddon estuary. The garden is surrounded by mature hedges and has established feature trees, shrubs and lawns and a small vegetable plot. A short front drive provides turning and parking spaces and access to the garage.

The ground floor offers a first hall with access to the office and a washroom. The inner hall leads to the kitchen, dining room and large lounge which has an open fire. These three main rooms look over the rear garden and have an open aspect. Adjacent to the kitchen there is a utility room and shower. Upstairs there are three double bedrooms, a single bedroom and bathroom with three-piece suite and over-bath shower. There is a large airing cupboard on the landing and integral wardrobe space within three of the bedrooms.

The Burlington Church of England Primary School is a few minutes walk away and there is a choice of senior schools, sixth form and post 16 provision within easily accessible bus service.

It is my responsibility to issue this report on those financial statements in accordance with the terms of the Regulations.

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General instructions given by theCharity Commissioners under Section 43 {7} (b) of the Act and to be found in the Church Guidance, 2006 edition, issued by the Finance Division of the Archbishops' Council. That examination includes a review of &e accounting records kept by the P.C.C. and a comparison of the accounts with those records. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
