" In addition to the Eucharist, the Church offers services (known as TheDaily Office) consisting of the singing of Psalms and hymns, thereading of Scripture and prayer. While the monastic office isconsidered to be the ideal form of daily prayer, it is seldom keptoutside of monastic establishments where the community regularlysings all seven day offices as well as the night office. In Western Ritecongregations of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese thetypical offering of the Office consists of Matins and Vespers, withoccasional use of Compline (the final office of the day). In the 16thcentury, the English Church simplified the monastic office for use inparish churches and for family and private use. This work was notoriginal, but a condensation of the primary elements of the ancientOffice. Our forms for Matins and Vespers make use of this structure, while restoring important didactic content from the monastic use (e.g.the office hymns and antiphons). The St. Ambrose Hymnal providesthe office hymns and Marian anthems; The Antiphoner providescollects and antiphons; the Ordo available from the Western RiteVicariate provides the official daily calendar and lectionary.
