READINGSFIRST READING IS 25:6-10AOn this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. On that day it will be said: "Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!" For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 23:1-3A, 3B-4, 5, 6 R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul. R.
He guides me in right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage. R.
You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. R.
Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come. R.
READING 2 PHIL 4:12-14, 19-20 Brothers and sisters:I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.
My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.
GOSPEL MT 22:1-14Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. The king said to him, 'My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?' But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen."
VALUE THEM BOTH WHAT IS “VALUE THEM BOTH?” VALUE THEM BOTH is the proposed state constitutional amendment for life supported by the Catholic Bishops of Kansas. The amendment is crucial because the Kansas Supreme Court recently created a nearly unlimited “right” to abortion, including taxpayer-funded abortion, teens seeking an abortion without parental knowledge or consent and late-term abortions. Once passed, the VALUE THEM BOTH will help protect mothers and their unborn babies from the abortion industry. Please pray for passage of VALUE THEM BOTH. Chuck Weber, the executive director of the Kansas Catholic Conference, will be offering a presentation on the "Value Them Both" Amendment on Thursday, Oct 22 at 7pm in the SMC Auditorium. Chuck Weber serves as the public policy arm of the Catholic Church in Kansas. Chuck is a former Kansas State Legislator and held various legislative leadership roles while at the Statehouse. A former news reporter and executive, Chuck is an independent writer and short film producer who has been commissioned by a wide variety of secular and Catholic Church clients including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, several State Catholic Conferences, the Pope Saint Paul VI Institute for Human Reproduction and Courage International. Chuck and Cindy Weber recently celebrated 35 years of marriage and have five children, including a special needs son. They are longtime members of Church of the Resurrection in Wichita. He can be reached at [email protected].
TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERSIf anyone is interested in giving a parishioner a ride to church, please contact the transportation committee via email at [email protected].
FROM OUR PRIESTS: FR. JEROME
PRO-LIFE MONTH (PART 2 OF 2 FROM LAST SUNDAY)Here are some quotes from our universal Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.' [Jer. 1:5] 'My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth.'" [Psalm 139:15]
Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law: 'You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish. God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.' [Gaudium et spes]
Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. 'A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,' 'by the very commission of the offense,' and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society'” [Catechism of the Catholic Church # 2270-2272]
Because of these clear statements, the Bishops of the United States have written in their document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship that, “A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who favors policies promoting an intrinsically evil act, such as abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, deliberately subjecting workers or the poor to subhuman living conditions, redefining marriage in ways that violate its essential meaning or racist behavior, if the voter’s intent is to support that position.” (#34).
28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMESunday, October 11, 2020pg 3
God gives us an invitation to have an abundant life. The banquet is ready, and the tables are set. Come! There is so much to attend to in the everydayness of our lives. We have plans, after all. There is never enough time and so much that needs to be done. There is work, children, and grandchildren, paying the bills, planning for retirement, figuring out the details of our next vacation, making sure we are on top of our game with work, planning social engagements, answering emails, texts, and getting our latest pictures on Facebook. There is always something. What is this about some banquet?
I need another party and commitment like a hole in the head. I can’t manage what I already have, and someone is asking me to do more! Seriously? I saw the invitation; I think it came in the mail the other day. Did I leave it on the table? Oh wait, it may have gotten thrown away. I can’t remember. In any case, I’m managing things pretty well on my own, I think. Thanks for thinking of me, but no thanks. My life is only as good as I make it and I have to be sure that all is in order! Oh, another invitation came today! This guy’s being persistent. Now, I’m getting angry. I wish he would just leave me alone and stop with this invitation nonsense.
I woke up feeling a bit unsettled this morning. The kids have left the house, the grandchildren are busy with their lives, my retirement fund is losing ground, I’m worried about my
health, folks have moved away, and I find myself alone. I am unhappy. I remember getting an invitation some time ago to a banquet promising new life and life in abundance. Did I miss something? I think I may have. I am finally discovering that life is not about me and my world. I think I’ve ignored the God who made me and the God who is the reason for my life, my hope, and my joy. It’s always been about me. I have not really discovered Eternal Love.
Is the invitation still open? Can I come to the banquet? I think I’d like to come. ©LPi
