Happy New Year
Mercy Is a Bridge
“Mercy is a key word that indicates God’s action to-
wards us. He does not limit himself merely to affirm-
ing his love, but makes it visible and tangible. Love,
after all, can never be just an abstraction. By its very
nature, it indicates something concrete: intentions, atti-
tudes and behaviors that are shown in daily living. The
mercy of God is his loving concern for each one of us.
He feels responsible; that is, he desires our wellbeing
and he wants to see us happy, full of joy, and peaceful.
This is the path which the merciful love of Christians
must also travel. As the Father loves, so do his chil-
dren. Just as he is merciful, so we are call to be merci-
ful to each other.” Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus

Evangelization, Stewardship &
Community Building
¡Hola! Hello from Spain. I am enjoying a holiday in
Spain. I have been is Spain only once – in the Madrid
airport changing planes. I will spend New Year’s Eve
traveling back to St. Louis. I wish you a very Happy
New Year; may the coming year be filled peace and
joy.
I wish to sincerely thank all those who did so much to
make our Christmas celebrations so beautiful – the par-
ish staff, the choir and musicians and all the liturgical
ministers. Thank you, thank you!
Today is the Feast of the Holy Family. In the sanctu-
ary of our church we have a beautiful wood carving of
the Holy Family of Nazareth. I am so pleased with the
number of young families present at our weekend litur-
gies. It is a joy to see the love parents share with their
children and to see the parents witness the faith to their
sons and daughters.

Shakespeare’s Tribute to Mercy
Since we’re focusing for the next twelve months on
mercy, I thought it would be appropriate to revisit
what the great English poet and playwright William
Shakespeare said about mercy.
In his 1596 play The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare
wrote a beautiful and oft-quoted passage praising the
importance of mercy as a human quality. Even after
420 years, these words still resonate with us as they
describe the important Christian virtue of mercy.
“The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likes God’s
When mercy seasons justice.
We do pray for mercy,
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy.” (Act 4 sc. 1)
Let us remember these poetic words as we go about
“rendering our deeds of mercy.”
Ministers
The Ministry Scheduler is user friendly. When you re-
ceive your reminder on Tuesday to serve, there is a
link that will take you to the website and allow you to
get a substitute if you are unable to serve. The Ministry
Scheduler allows you to make changes or block out
certain dates that you know you are unavailable. If you
have any questions, please call the office at 993-3194,
opt. 1 and the secretary will be happy to help you.
