MISSION STATEMENT Sacred Heart Parish is a welcoming people, nourished by the Eucharist,

inspired by the word of God, engaged in lifelong learning, with outreach to the poor.

Colors play an important role in presenting and understanding the images within a stained glass window. While in some pieces, colors can have any number of meanings, in religious

stained glass, color plays a very particular role in communicating a symbol. See inside bulletin for the meaning of each color.

Deacon Dan’s Corner: God’s Children Living the Father’s Word

This week we will continue to build on faith as one of the three theological virtues. Faith, hope and love are

the three theological virtues.

Scripture Passage: 1 Corinthians 13:13 “So faith, hope and love remain,

these three, and the greatest of these is love.”

Brief Commentary on the Scripture Passage: This verse is St. Paul’s powerful and beautiful conclusion to his

famous love chapter, in which St. Paul talks about how agape love, which is from God, behaves. It is a statement of character. It is a

chapter of the character of God.

Building on our theme of faith, faith’s relationship to love and hope is that faith is forward looking and moving. Faith “moves” by riding on the “wings of hope” to its final destination, its longing, its home, which is the Person Love. The Person Love is God. That is why the greatest of the three is love, because love is our final destination.

God is our Home and our heart’s desire. St. Augustine said that our hearts are always restless until they rest in Thee, meaning God.

Bible Study opportunities: Deacon Dan leads bible study on Tuesday nights, beginning

September 10. We are beginning our study of the Letter to the Hebrews. It is a rich book where you will come to know the Risen Christ Jesus, and our life in Him. We join for Mass at 6:30, and

gather for study afterwards, concluding about 8:15.

Fr. Don leads bible study at St. Bernadette on Fridays at 6:30am and they conclude with Mass at 7:45am.

Sacred Heart Parish has an on-line personal bible study resource subscription called FORMED. Login information is available to all

parishioners on the next page of the bulletin.

Recommended Book: “The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence

Recommended Daily Devotional: “Jesus Calling” In closing this week, I encourage you to actively pursue faith. It

takes action and commitment to enter into the interior life. My pray-er for us this week is that we all actively pursue our God this week.

The Week at a Glance

PARTS OF THE MASS - The Eucharistic Prayer - Bells

Bells are permitted at Mass, but not mandatory but they add something beautiful to the experience. The

bells ring only three times: once at the ‘epiclesis’ when the priest puts his hands over the gifts and invokes the

blessing of the Holy Spirit, again for the second time when the priest elevates and shows the host to the

people, and third time is when the priest elevates the chalice and shows the Blood of Christ to the people. We

ring bells to get people’s attention and let them know something important is going on and something has changed. Bells at Mass tell us that a miracle has just

happened: the transubstantiation. By Fr. Rocky
