PALM SUNDAY SUNDAY OF THE PASSION

The Cross-Shaped Throne

April 14, 2019

AS WE GATHER

Today’s liturgy is full of contrasts. We recall Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, with its pomp and pageantry. Then we plunge into the Passion, which ends with Jesus’ burial. There is a unifying factor: On Sunday, the crowds hailed Jesus as the King of Israel, and on Friday He reigned from His cruel throne, the cross. There He destroyed death for the sake of His subjects. We offer thanksgiving for His royal, benevolent rule over us and all who bend the knee and call Jesus Lord.

† PROCESSION OF PALMS †

GREETING

P: The grace of our Lord † Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: Amen. P: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna to the Son of David.

COLLECT

P: Let us pray. Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His Holy City,

C: grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He comes again, may go forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts and follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life;

P: through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL John 12:12–19

(Jesus enters Jerusalem.)

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. P: The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to

Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, crying out, C: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” P: And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, C: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” P: His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they

remembered that these things had been written about Him and had been done to Him. The crowd that had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet Him was that they heard He had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another,

C: “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him.” P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. P: When the crowd was greeting Jesus, the people were quoting a verse from Psalm 118, which

Luther said was his favorite. Verse 25 begins, “Save us, we pray, O LORD!” “Save, Lord” is the meaning of “Hosanna.” As we process into church, let us join our voices to the crowd’s, using that psalm and then singing, “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.”

P: Let us go forth in peace, C: in the name of the Lord.

The procession begins.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” LSB 443

1 Hosanna, loud hosanna, The little children sang; Through pillared court and temple The lovely anthem rang. To Jesus, who had blessed them, Close folded to His breast, The children sang their praises, The simplest and the best.

2 From Olivet they followed Mid an exultant crowd,

The victor palm branch waving And chanting clear and loud. The Lord of earth and heaven Rode on in lowly state Nor scorned that little children Should on His bidding wait.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P: We cannot come closer to God as we are. It is only through the gracious forgiveness Christ won for us that we are considered righteous under God’s Law. Let us confess our sins, pleading, “Lord, have mercy” and “Save us, O Lord.”

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and our sinful condition. P: Father in heaven, David thanked You for answering him and becoming his salvation. C: Your Son humbled Himself and became a human being to die in our place. But we

confess that in our disobedience we have sinned in thought, word, and deed. Lord, have mercy.

P: He was obedient to death and took our sins with Him to the cross. You have exalted Him, that

every knee should bow. C: We confess that without Your help we are bound to continue in sin as Your rebellious

children. Hosanna! Save us, O Lord! P: For Jesus’ sake, our gracious God has given us His Son’s own righteousness. The stone the

builders rejected has become our salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Deuteronomy 32:36–39

(The Lord is the only God.)

36 The Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone and there is none remaining, bond or free. 37Then he will say, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge, 38who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you; let them be your protection!” 39“See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.” P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE Philippians 2:5–11

(“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”)

5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

PASSION Luke 22:1–23:56

(Jesus suffers, dies, and is buried.)

Note to our worshippers* This weekend is “officially” Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion. This change was made to address the historically declining attendance at Good Friday services. Christians are not hearing the account of our Lord’s crucifixion. We invite you to join in the corporate worship at the Horizon Conference Center, Saginaw at 1pm, or join us here at Immanuel for noon or 6:30pm worship. Because of the length of the reading, congregation will remain seated until directed to stand at the account of our Lord’s death.

Him. They also blindfolded Him and kept asking Him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck You?” And they said many other things against Him, blaspheming Him.

CREED Explanation of the 2nd Article of the Apostles’ Creed

C: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from all eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

P: Let us pray for the people of God here and around the world and for all people in their various needs.

Lord Jesus, although knowing about Judas’ plans, You arranged for the Passover, which foreshadowed the Lord’s Supper.

Strengthen the faith of Your people here and wherever the Sacrament is celebrated, as we receive the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation, which come to us through Your body and blood. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: Lord Jesus, although their Lord, at table You taught Your disciples the nature of true servanthood.

Guide and direct all who work in the healing professions, in police departments and armed forces, in all levels of government, and in the cultivation and distribution of crops, that they see themselves as Your servants for the common good and be given the wisdom and guidance they need. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: Lord Jesus, although Peter spoke confidently, You knew that in weakness he would deny You; yet You said he would turn and strengthen his brothers.

Strengthen all whose faith is weak, those who face this day burdened by their past errors, and all who cannot comprehend the depth of Your love, that they realize and rejoice in the forgiveness You so freely offer. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: In the garden, although You prayed in anguish, You asked that the Father’s will be done.

We remember before You especially . . . Grant courage to them and all who struggle with sudden crisis or long-term illness, all who are near death, and all who languish, unjustly imprisoned or discriminated against, that they rely on Your gracious plans. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: On the cross, although facing death Yourself, You promised paradise to a criminal and proclaimed the payment for our sins finished.

Grant that Your Holy Spirit open the ears of those who have not heard the Gospel in terms they can understand and believe, that they rejoice with us in the forgiveness of sins and the paradise that awaits all who rely on Your grace and love. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: At the end, although You could not do anything physically, You committed Your spirit to the Father. Into Your hands, heavenly Father, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

We greet one another, saying, “Peace be with you.”

PROPER PREFACE

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who accomplished the salvation of mankind by the tree of the cross that, where death arose, there life also might rise again and that the serpent who overcame by the tree of the garden might likewise by the tree of the cross be overcome. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Matthew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24; Luke 22:19–20;

1 Corinthians 11:23–25

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My † body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My † blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He

comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20 P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to

drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

LORD’S PRAYER Matthew 6:9–13

ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

HYMN “No Tramp of Soldiers’ Feet” LSB 444

1 No tramp of soldiers’ marching feet With banners and with drums,

No sound of music’s martial beat: “The King of glory comes!” To greet what pomp of kingly pride No bells in triumph ring, No city gates swing open wide: “Behold, behold your King!”

2 And yet He comes. The children cheer; With palms His path is strown.

With ev’ry step the cross draws near: The King of glory’s throne. Astride a colt He passes by As loud hosannas ring, Or else the very stones would cry “Behold, behold your King!”

3 What fading flow’rs His road adorn; The palms, how soon laid down!

No bloom or leaf but only thorn The King of glory’s crown. The soldiers mock, the rabble cries, The streets with tumult ring, As Pilate to the mob replies, “Behold, behold your King!”

4 Now He who bore for mortals’ sake The cross and all its pains

And chose a servant’s form to take, The King of glory reigns. Hosanna to the Savior’s name Till heaven’s rafters ring, And all the ransomed host proclaim “Behold, behold your King!”

Stewardship Corner

“When He rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from

sorrow. ‘Why are you sleeping?’ He asked them” (Luke 22:45-46). Jesus was exhausted too. After

all, He was human. He got hungry and tired, just as His disciples did. We are prone to shake our

heads at those lazy, disloyal disciples, but how often do we say we’re too tired to serve, too poor

to give, too inadequate to help? Like the disciples who were transformed on Pentecost, we have

received the Holy Spirit Who equips, enables, and energizes us to be God’s stewards.

About the Palm Crosses

Palm Crosses are not only an aid to our observance of Palm Sunday, these particular crosses are a

way for us to help support self-help programs and community project in East Africa. The crosses

are imported by a volunteer-run program of fellow Christians in this country. All of their net

proceeds and any donations are returned to East Africa in the form of non-denominational grants.

These grants have enriched the lives of hundreds of Africans who desperately need assistance,

encouragement, and hope for a better tomorrow. Projects supported through the palm crosses

include agriculture and vocational training schools, safe community water systems and emergency

relief for victims of civil strife, drought and other disasters. Total grants from African palms have

exceeded $1,000,000. The crosses are made throughout the year in seven mud villages in Tanzania,

often involving entire families in the process. Tanzanian workers who make the crosses are paid

generous wages for their labor. Please take a cross home with your following the Palm Sunday

services. Immanuel Lutheran Church Mission Outreach through Palm Sunday Cross Distribution
