PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD March 20, 2016 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR: Palm/Passion Sunday - March 20, 2016 The Passion of Christ according to Luke 22:14-23:56 Five weeks ago, we received ashes on our forehead and were once again reminded of our sinfulness and our need for radical change in our lives. But those ashes did not just come from the bottom of someone’s fireplace. They were the result of blessed burned palms. Today we are five weeks older and our Lenten preparation for Easter has ended. The palms we now hold in our hands are new green leaves ready to as a reminder that we are part of this great story; that it isn’t just something that took place 2,000 years ago; that this drama is ongoing; that we are each involved in our own way in being part of the conspiracy and the betrayal that happened that night. These palms we wave today in jubilation can remind us, for example, that we have played the role of Peter in our own lives: lying and denying. They can remind us that we have played the role of John: abandoning. They can remind us that we have played the role of all the rest: arguing about who among us is the greatest. They can even remind us that we have played the role of Judas: betraying. But here’s the good news about these palms: they can also re- mind us of the miracle of mercy and reconciliation that can be ours. They can do that by reminding us of Jesus’ words of inde- scribable mercy spoken to the thieves crucified on either side of him: “Today you will be with me in paradise.” These palms that five weeks ago reminded us that we are dust, and to dust we will return, now remind us that we are also graced by love, an abundant love that goes before us and beck- ons us to follow. Lent, my friends, begin with palms and ends with palms. The question is: What will we do with their promise and their challenge? Have a blessed Holy Week, Father Miguel Ceja New Schedule of Weekend Masses From our Pastor... It is with love and respect that I communicate with you. Father Anthony Bui and I have expressed our desire to serve our community in a much more effi- cient way. We need your patience and understand- ing. Our parish has had an average of 4 priest in its past. Now, only Fr. Anthony and I are responsible to re- spond to the overwhelming pastoral needs of our parish and school. We’d love to be present at every meeting, activity and mass, but it’s practically impossible. So, we’ve discussed it thoroughly and consulted with all the main councils and ministries at our parish and the decision is to eliminate the 7:00 pm Sunday mass. We now have an average of 10 masses between Sat- urday and Sunday. Three of our four English masses are low in attendance. By eliminating this mass will give us an opportunity to combine the remainder English masses, will en- hance the liturgies by moving the youth choir and ministers to the 9:00 am mass. And hopefully will increase the attendance. Another necessary change is to move the 4:00 pm Saturday evening mass to 5:00 pm. The reasons? The Saturday mass in order to canonically be a Sun- day’s vigil mass has to be no earlier than 5:00 pm; It will offer us a smaller gap between the 5:00 and the 7:00 pm masses and will, therefore, help us to save energy. Also this change will give us more time between weddings, and the evening masses. In Summary: The Saturday 4:00 pm evening Mass will be changed to 5:00 pm and the 7:00 pm Sunday mass will be eliminated. The rest of the masses will remain the same. OUR CHANGE IS EFFECTIVE ON THE SEC- OND WEEK OF EASTER. Starting the weekend of April 2 nd and 3 rd of April, the 4:00 pm Saturday mass will start at 5:00 pm and the 7:00 pm Sunday Mass will be eliminated. I am very grateful to all the ministers, especially, Mr. Lincoln Mena and Josh Larios and the youth choir for their faithful leadership in this mass. I thank you for your understanding. Peace, Father Miguel Ceja
