What is Scouting?• The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young

people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law

The Scouting Programs• Cub Scouts• For boys First through Fifth Graders

• Boy Scouts• For boys 11 through 17

• Varsity• For young men between the age of 14 and 17

• Venturing• For young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20

The Cub Scouts

• First Grade : Tigers – introduction to scouting

• Second Grade : Wolfs – • Third Grade : Bears –

• Fourth Grade : Webelo I – preparing for boy scouts• Fifth Grade : Webelo II –

National Organization But Run Locally

• 2011 national membership:• 223,003 Tiger Cubs (first grade) • 747,429 Cub Scouts (second and third grades) • 612,734 Webelos Scouts (fourth and fifth grades) • 1,583,166 total Cub Scouts • 45,962 Cub Scout packs • 1,002,832 Cub Scout leaders

A Family Program

• Family involvement is key • For Tigers – an adult partner is required at all

events• You are Akela and can sign off on completed

achievements• Families are welcome at nearly all scouting

events• Family camp in October

Safety Is Paramount• Trained Adult Leaders • Two Deep Leadership • No one-on-one adult contact with a scout

• Background checks on all adult leaders

Youth Focused Program• “Scouting Is A Game With A Purpose” • It’s about Fun• It’s about Values• It’s about Learning

• It’s our responsibility to put on such a program

Planned Fun Activities• Map and Compass : October• Family Camp : October• Halloween Party : October• Pinewood Derby : January• Overnight Outing : February (tentative)• Multiple Hikes• Campfires• Campouts : July and August

Planned Civic Activities• Springhill School Clean-up : TBD• Scouting For Food : November• Caroling At Retirement Communities (tent) : December• Church Clean-up : TBD• Marching in the Fourth of July Parade : July

General Time Commitments• 1 Pack Meeting A Month (1 hour)• 1 Pack Event A Month (2-3 hours)• 1 or 2 Den Events A Month (1-2 hours)

Advancements and Badges• Scouts work to earn their rank advancement badges by

completing set requirements• Other badges and awards are earned• Academics• Athletics• Other achievements

Additional Requirement• We are asking all new parents to take the on-line BSA Youth

Protection Training.• Takes about 10-15 minutes• Go to http://www.myscouting.org

• Create an account• Click E-Learning and take the Youth Protection Training

• We are encouraging all new parents to take Fast Start training for Den Leaders to get a better understanding of the program (30 minutes)
