He said, “Well Mom, St. Paul says in the New Testament, “At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. I’m just getting some practice in.” We take time to genuflect and cross ourselves before going into the pew as a sign of reverence to Jesus Christ the Lord who is present in the sacrament of the altar. Jesus Christ the Risen Lord is present in the tabernacle of every Catholic Church so we bow the knee to Him as we enter church. We kneel to show reverence to the Lord at that point, but we should also make a sign of reverence before we receive communion. Some of us do this, but I have noticed that some of us have forgotten. The sign of reverence before we receive communion should be a genuflection or profound bow. This should happen as the person in front of us receives. Then we step forward to receive the Lord. An increasing number of Catholics are also kneeling to receive communion on the tongue. Often this becomes obstructive to the people in front or behind. If you wish to receive communion kneeling no one will tell you to get up, but it is probably better to simply make a profound bow before your receive. I should point out that the church does not allow individuals to dip the host into the chalice in order to receive the Precious Blood. Instead, either please receive just the host or take the chalice from the minister of communion, take a sip and return it. There are a few other details to which I should call your attention. You should not come to church chewing gum. You should remember to observe a fast from all food and drink for one hour before receiving communion. You should not come to church wearing your beach clothes. Men and women should dress modestly—avoiding short shorts, keeping shoulders and startling tattoos covered, and avoiding T-shirts with offensive messages or images. The main thing to remember is the attitude of reverence—never doing anything to draw attention to ourselves for we have come to worship the living God. In reminding you of this I should also give some praise. Some time ago the bishop forwarded a letter to me from a visitor to OLR. He said that the Mass was so reverent and the people were so much in prayer before and during the Mass that he thought our worship was a model for all Catholic Churches everywhere! Thank you for coming to Mass at OLR, and thank you for worshipping together as the family of God in this place with such reverence and love. Your pastor, Fr. July 23, 2017 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

When my younger brother converted to the Catholic faith my Presbyterian mother asked him why he kneels down before he goes into the pew. The SC Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act (H 3548) is currently in the Committee on Medical Affairs in the SC Senate. It will be taken up again in January 2018. Please go to www.nrlc.org, click on Quick Links:

Protecting Unborn Children from Dismemberment Abortion, and learn about this horrific method of abortion. Please contact your state senators and representatives and let them know you support this much-needed legislation banning dismemberment abortion. Last year abortions were banned after 20 weeks (some exceptions) in this state (SC Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act H 3114, 2015-2016). Let’s keep up the momentum till there is no more abortion. Go to www.scstatehouse.gov to find your legislators. For more information contact Victoria Norris at

[email protected] or 864-967-2713.

In continuation of our

celebration of Our Lady of

Fatima this year, Mass on

August 13th will be held at

5:00 pm followed by a Rosary in the upper church.

Are you in need of a file cabinet? The church office has several

OLD file cabinets that are not being used. They are available to

anyone willing to haul them away. Contact Beth in the church

office for more information.

Information about the Divine

Mercy Shrine will be shared next

weekend. You will not want to

miss hearing the interesting facts

and plans so be sure to be here!

Would you be willing to pick up an extra school backpack (or two?) for the kids at Shemwood Crossing Apartments and the motels? This is the same group to which so many contributed winter coats last year. If you are able to help, please drop off backpacks at the Parish office. Your generosity is so appreciated by folks who are forced to spend most of what they earn or receive on housing.
