June 5, 2016 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

If you do a bit of “church shopping” around the Catholic churches of Greenville you’ll realize that this city is an amazing and unique place to be a Catholic.

St. Mary’s is the historic church downtown. With a fine liturgy, an excellent choir and solid preaching, many find St. Mary’s to be “high church.” Across the river at St. Anthony’s parish the church is a simple building, the spirituality is Franciscan and the culture African American. With lively preaching and vital mission to the underprivileged, St. Anthony’s is popular for its informal and relevant style. The two churches in the city could hardly be more different.

The same can be said of the two large suburban churches. In Taylors, Prince of Peace is home to an energetic and committed traditionalist Catholic community. With many Masses in Latin and with a good school and music program, Prince of Peace celebrates traditional Catholicism with beauty and reverence. Meanwhile, St Mary Magdalene parish in Simpsonville is now the largest parish in the diocese. With thousands of families it is a humongous community with a wide range of activities and family friendly worship. In Mauldin, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish accents the activities at its bigger neighbor, but with a smaller, but zealous congregation.

Does it matter that there is so much variety? Isn’t Catholicism supposed to be the same everywhere? Not really. In a country like ours where there is so much individualism and diversity we should expect a lively and dynamic mixture of different expressions of the Catholic faith.

The different expressions sometimes reveal a clash of opinions among different Catholics. Instead the different expressions should express a different emphasis. In the pastor’s letters this month I would like to share with you the essentials of the faith that should bind us together despite our different emphases.

The Catholic faith is “ever ancient ever new.” This means we hold certain truths to be timeless and unchanging. At the same time we are always seeking fresh expressions of those truths. The truths remain the same, but the method of their application and the emphasis we place on them varies according to the culture and personalities involved.

There are three areas in which this balance needs to be worked out: Worship, Works, and What We Believe. Over the next three weeks I’ll be writing about these three points and how we seek to live them out at Our Lady of the Rosary parish.
