From the earliest times the Fathers of the Church began to see that the Blessed Virgin Mary had a vital role to play in the redemption of the world. In Galatians chapter four St. Paul observed that “in the fullness of time God sent forth his Son born of a woman.” The first theologians noted that Jesus was born “of” a woman and not “through” a woman. In other words, Jesus took his human flesh from Mary. Because he was God, this means God established a unique and amazing bond with Mary. Mary is rightly called in Greek theotokos or “God bearer”. In English we translate this as “Mother of God.” We don’t call Mary “Mother of God” because she is the mother of God the Father, but because she is the mother of God the Son. She is the mother of Jesus and Jesus is the second person of the Trinity in human form, therefore Mary is “Mother of God.” Her unique relationship with God means Mary is the most exalted of all God’s creations—greater even than the angels. This is why the most ancient hymns to Mary extol her as “Higher than the cherubim, more glorious than the seraphim.” The church’s first theologians called Mary “the second Eve,” and the name “Eve” means “Mother of the Living.” As the second Eve, and the first to be redeemed by her Son, Mary becomes the Mother of All Believers. Mary is therefore not only the Mother of Jesus, she is also our Mother. On the cross Jesus affirms this as he says to the Apostle John (and by extension to us) “Behold your mother.” Mary is our Mother in the faith, but she is also called “Mother of the Church” because she was present at the foundation of the church on the Day of Pentecost. Mary offers us the rosary as a way to stay close to the mysteries of our redemption, and to therefore stay close to Jesus and Mary. We are blessed that our church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, and on this Mother’s Day I encourage you all to renew your own commitment to pray the rosary. As you do, you will find yourself drawn into an ever closer relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord through the intercession and assistance of “Mary, Help of Christians.” Your parish priest, Fr. Longenecker

Dear Brothers and Sisters May is Mary’s month and today is Mother’s Day, so it is appropriate to not only thank God for our mothers and ask for their protection and blessing, but also to take time to ponder the mystery of Mary in the plan of salvation. From the earliest times the Fathers of the Church began to see that the Blessed Virgin Mary had a vital role to play in the redemption of the world.
