The following is from Deacon Ron Meyer. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The second Sunday of Advent is at hand. Amid the secular preparations for the coming day of the Nativity of the Lord, it is helpful for us to think about the spiritual meaning of this time in the life of the church and in our lives. A good way to do this, aside from spending more time in prayer, is to try to understand the Sacred Scrip- tures for this time, as presented to us each Sunday during Advent. We will find in the scriptures much to reflect on as to how and why the Nativity came about. The scriptures for this Sunday contain a long first reading from the prophet Isaiah. At first glance, this reading might be a little confusing; who is Isaiah speaking to? Whose voice is crying out in the desert? Who or what is Zion? What mountain is referenced? But, when read as a sequel to last Sundays reading, also from Isaiah, the sequence begins to make sense. Last Sundays first reading reveals a chosen people in anguish because it appears that God has abandoned them. Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down”; “Oh that you would meet us doing right”; “Behold You are angry and we are sinful”. With this state of things in mind, todays first reading speaks of Good News for the Israelite people. Its very first words, Comfort, give comfort to my peopleare a clue to what is to follow. Their prayers will be answered. The promise of the first paragraph gives way to Isaiahs description of the good things to come and the first indication of a forerunner (“A voice cries out”), one who is to announce the good news. The Gospel for this Sunday identifies this forerunner as John the Baptist. The final paragraph urges the Israelites to proclaim the coming of the Lord God, who will feed His flock and gather the lambs to His bosom”. Proclamation of the Word to all nations was a task specifically assigned to the Israelite people. We begin to see in this reading, then, the revelation of Gods tender love for His people. The Israelites had a long history of offending God following their liberation from Egypt. They intermarried with pagan tribes, resorted to many pagan practices that were specifically forbidden, and suffered many harsh punishments because of their disobedience. Regardless of their actions, God always forgave them. Despite their bad behavior and unfaithfulness, God had a final plan, a plan not only to forgive them again, but to redeem them once and for all through the death and resurrection of His Son. The Advent Sundays describe their longing for God, and His response, leading up to the Nativity itself. What a loving God we have! He is not a vindictive God who punishes, but a loving God whose face is Mercy. How can we not love Him and want to serve a God who loves us so much? Advent is our time to truly deepen our relationship with Him. The second Sunday of Advent is at hand. Amid the secular preparations for the coming day of the Nativity of the Lord, it is helpful for us to think about the spiritual meaning of this time in the life of the church and in our lives.
