tive development and marketing of new products.

Project management isn’t just indispensable to global players and market giants. Small and medium-sized companies can also benefit from consistent and properly ap-plied project management practices. Sometimes, even a small construc-tion site or a new store opening can lead to unforeseen and seem-ingly insurmountable problems that well-trained project managers know how to avoid. People who manage projects, no matter how big or small, need project management skills be-cause surveys regularly confirm that a project’s success or failure depends, most of all, on the competence of the project management personnel.

In our globalised world, projects are no longer location-specific, which means that project participants from different countries with different cul-tures often find themselves on the same team. This only works if the team members’ activities are efficient-ly coordinated. Organisations around the world are now coming to realise how important it is to have quali-fied and competent project man-agers on their payroll if they want their projects to be effectively and efficiently implemented. All kinds of sectors of industry use project man-agement tools. Correctly understood and applied, they can provide an or-ganisation with a distinct competitive advantage. They help it to save valu-able time, they facilitate the smooth implementation of mergers and they enable the faster and more cost-effec-

he word ‚management’ is derived from the Latin term, ‚manum agere’, which

means ‚to lead by the hand’. ‚Project’ is a term that means ‚something thrown forth’ and it also has Latin roots in the word ‚projectum’. So the meaning of project management is to direct and implement something that is currently in progress and will continue into the future. That’s no easy task. Also, there is more to lead-ership than simply leading the way. A project manager has to understand the project’s complexities right from the outset so that he can coordinate and direct it appropriately. Regular checks guarantee that the project will, for the most, run smoothly.

Why project management

Everybody uses the term project management these days. Most people would say they ’ve heard of it and that they know what it’s all about. Yet project management covers a vast field of knowledge and it involves more than just the haphazard imple-mentation of projects.

People who work in complex projects, which means they are in-volved in project processes, regularly encounter new requirements and problems which can be quite chal-lenging for the project manager. In addition to the general management skills and decision-making routine that they learn over time, project managers have to be persevering in-dividuals who can cope with stress and heavy workloads. They have to retain an overview of all aspects of the project so that they can make sustainable decisions. A project man-ager doesn’t just need the technical know-how to implement the project but also, and very importantly, the right social competences. Soft skills should never be underestimated or neglected. Project management pro-vides a practical range of tools which the project manager can use in a va-riety of methods and approaches that are essential to a successful project.

Project managers often have to be self-reliant

„I urgently recommend any-one with project responsibility to be consistent in learning project management skills and applying them properly.“

ttmann & Partner was founded in 1992 and it has always been headquar-

tered in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz near Nuremberg. Dr. Ottmann and his trainers provide project manage-ment training to the employees of or-ganisations that implement projects. Ottmann & Partner’s clients profit from the trainers’ extensive knowl-edge and experience. They teach course participants about develop-ments in the rapidly changing envi-ronment and demonstrate possible solutions. Ottmann & Partner per-form project assessments as recom-mended by GPM Deutsche Ges-

ellschaft für Projektmanagement and the IPMA International Project Management Association (Project Excellence Model) to assess the sta-tus of an organisation’s project work. This assessment identifies any actions which have to be taken in the project. Ottmann & Partner then discuss the results of the assessment with the relevant manager so that they can jointly define project optimisation measures and provide support in their implementation. As a result, standard project management and project con-sultation structures are created directly within the organisation.

Ottmann & Partner’s project management training products and services are supplemented by fur-ther project-related services such as project analysis and statements of work, project planning and control, project documentation, project as-sessment and project coaching. Project coaching gives managers and future managers the opportunity to brush up their knowledge and learn project man-agement skills that are tailored to their organisation’s specific requirements.

About Ottmann & Partner

What does Ottmann & Partner do

...and do they have good coffee?

Don’t worry. We have good coffee. But that won’t be the only thing keeping you awake. Our workshops, coaching, advice and analyses ensure that you derive maximum be-nefit from your work and that you embark on your next projects refreshed and reinvigorated.

O

Page 7: Opmc Katalog En

In their courses, Ottmann & Partner make every effort to give participants a hands-on experience of „real“ projects. They don’t just in-volve a trainer standing at the front of the room like a schoolteacher. Par-ticipants actually work in small teams on transfer projects over a several week period. Initially, they are taught the theory so that they can use it in the transfer project, which helps to deepen their understanding of it and its practical application. Participants also learn methods of discussion and argumentation in small teams, and then to present the results of their work. The workshops help them to assimilate the material they have learned and they also promote team-work, which is absolutely indispensa-ble in projects, as well as communicating methodical competence in management and the essential soft skills.

In addition to the weekend cours-es and workshops, Ottmann & Partner provide preparatory courses for IPMA certification. At the end of the courses, participants can take an examination leading to an interna-tionally recognised certificate at their competence level.

„We received some excellent advice from Ottmann & Part-ner. Our project processes are now much more efficient.“

ounded in 1965, the IPMA International Project Management Association

was originally a discussion group for international project managers, though it soon developed into an organisation with over 60,000 mem-bers around the globe. As an umbrel-la association with over 50 national project management associations as members, the IPMA is responsible for ensuring uniform international standards for project management certification. This is important to ensure standardised project manage-ment quality. If you decide to obtain IPMA certification, you know that you’ll be getting a valuable certifi-cate that is valid all over the world.

IPMA, GPM and PM-Zert

All about the IPMA...everything you always wanted to know but never dared ask

If you already know everything about the IPMA, you can skip the next few pages. If you don’t, they’ll provide you with quite a lot of interesting information about the associa-tion. After all, you may be planning to obtain certification soon, and it’s good to know who you’re getting it from.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pro-jektmanagement, GPM, is the largest professional association for project management in Germany. The GPM is networked with project management associations around the world via the IPMA. It is a non-profit association which has been providing services to science, research, business, politics and associations since 1979. Members in all sectors of industry with all types of organisations ben-efit from the comprehensive range of services offered by the GPM. As a result of its involvement in the devel-opment of international project man-agement standards, the GPM makes an important contribution to the advancement and professionalisation of project management. It also has an award scheme, the German Project Excellence Award, which pays tribute to people who achieve project manage-

ment excellence. It was initiated by Roland Ottmann and implemented as a project for the GPM and IPMA.

In addition to the national as-sociations, the IPMA also has certification bodies (PM-Zert). These provide independent certifica-tion to project managers in accord-ance with standard procedures. They are assessed by the IPMA and, as is customary in Germany, they are ISO 9001 certified and accredited. As the GPM’s independent certification body, PM-Zert issues various project management certificates. PM-Zert is financially independent from the GPM and it has its own organisa-tional units. PM-Zert uses a team of assessors at each certification level to test certification candidates in accord-ance with a range of parameters such as knowledge, ability and personality.

ur Level D to A courses specifically prepare par-ticipants for their chosen

IPMA certification level. During the assessment, the candidate’s knowl-edge is tested. At Levels C to A, their actual project management experi-ence is also examined and evaluated. Soft skills are also important in the assessment process. It is important that the candidates demonstrate their project management skills, irrespec-tive of whether the project is internal, external, national or international, simple or complex.

GPM Deutsche Gesellschaft für Projektmanagement functions as the IPMA’s representative in Ger-many. It only certifies people as PM-Zert trainers if they can demonstrate an excellent knowledge of project

management and have proven project management experience.

Perhaps you are wondering how you will benefit from a certification course at one of the four levels and from the certificate that you will re-ceive when you have completed it. The answer is very simple: our cer-tificates are internationally recog-nised and highly respected. If you complete one of the courses and pass the examination, you will be a certi-fied project management expert. The certificate will help you to advance in your career and provide you with better opportunities in the labour market. Certification enables you to consider and improve your knowl-edge and skills and receive objective and impartial verification of your project management competence.

The certificate can also mean greater job security for you.

If you have personnel responsibil-ity in your organisation and your staff have participated in certifica-tion courses, your projects and your staff’s personal development benefit. Your entire organisation’s value is en-hanced because you can prove to cus-tomers that it has certified expertise. Not only does this boost your organi-sation’s image, it also provides it with distinct competitive advantages.Level D is the IPMA system’s entry level and all certification candidates have to achieve certification at this level before they can obtain higher-level certification. Level D certifi-cation courses communicate basic project management skills.

Our certification courses D - A

Know how to do it right

… and why things didn’t always work out in the past

How do you get started?

he more than 10,000 project managers who have partici-pated in our courses are al-

ready successful in their new functions after obtaining a first-rate qualification. Gain initial project management com-petence by taking part in this course and acquire the necessary methodi-cal competence to manage successful projects, whatever level of certification you are hoping to achieve.

Who are the trainers?

The charismatic and competent train-ers at Ottmann & Partner have dec-ades of experience in the field of project management. They are all cer-tified by PM-Zert (the GPM Deut-sche Gesellschaft für Projektmanage-ment’s certification body) and are experts in their field. In the GPM’s trainer benchmarking, Ottmann & Partner’s trainers have been the highest rated project management trainers since 2001!

T

Our certification courses are explained to you on the following pages. We have provided information about entry requirements, course content, the methods that Ottmann & Partner use and what you can expect.

What does the assessment mean for you?

You receive independent confirma-tion of your competence! The GPM Deutsche Gesellschaft für Projekt-management, the German member of the IPMA International Project Management Association, has a cer-tification body called PM-Zert which performs project personnel assess-ments. Certificates are awarded at various competence levels in accord-ance with the internationally recog-nised IPMA Four Level Certification System (IPMA 4-L-C).See diagram on the right

Page 17: Opmc Katalog En

The PM-Zert assessors are proven project management experts. They have gained practical experience as managers or consultants in many projects and they have a knowledge of all theoretical/scientific aspects of project management. They have dem-onstrated their project management competence and their ability to assess

project managers at all certification levels in a comprehensive assessor val-idation process. The assessors remain in regular contact with each other to discuss experiences and new findings. PM-Zert uses their knowledge to optimise the assessment process and to improve the assessor team’s com-petence. Two assessors are assigned

to each certification candidate. Each of them assesses the candidate inde-pendently. In this way, PM-Zert en-sures an independent process which satisfies IPMA requirements at each certification level and guarantees maximum objectivity in the assessment process for all candidates.

Sometimes, you feel as if your project is like a ship that you have lost control over. It veers off course, takes far too long to arrive at its destination or – the worst thing that can happen to a project manager – it sinks. But you can do lots of things to regain control as captain of your ship. And our course shows you how.

„Sometimes it’s really diffi-cult to work effectively in a team. Some members feel over challenged, others feel that they aren’t being chal-lenged enough and some give the impression that the only reason they attend meet-ings is to catch up on their sleep. I learned a lot about team building, motivation and conflicts in the course. I also learned how to deal with stressful situations and what I can do for MYSELF when I get the feeling that everything’s getting to be too much for me.“

„Roland Ottmann is author and trainer in the project management scene with an excellent reputation as certification trainer. He has written a textbook that stands apart from conventional ones (...). It’s a completely original publication with a clever didactic concept. The textbook is based on a consistent story. (...) The author aims (...) to prepare candidates for PM-Zert certification without them having to process „vast quantities of reading material“. (...) Although the textbook reads just as fluidly as a novel, the story contains a great deal of im-portant material that is conveyed in a practical and interesting way. (...) There’s no easier way to acquire project management knowledge. Hopefully, other project management authors will follow his lead.“
