Mould – a result of incorrect installation

Connecting joints

Introduction

This article contains a number of recommen-dations and explanations regarding the crea-tion of sealing of window, door and AL/glass facade connecting joints that will maintain functionality over a long period of time. You will of course also find materials suitable for general use in connecting joints.

What is a facade and window connecting joint?

The term “connecting joint” classifies the space, of which normally there are tens of metres on the facade envelope of each buil-ding between the masonry and other con-struction sections such as windows, doors, AL/glass facades and roof skylights.

Why pay attention to the sealing of a connecting joint

A connecting joint is a space that should achieve similar thermal insulation properties and durability as its adjacent construction sections in accordance with local norms fol-lowing the EU Council directive 2002/91/EC. This directive implemented on the local level for builders actually means that they will need to provably implement measures in the area of reducing the energy performance of buildings and will apply to the majority of newly constructed buildings as well as in

instances of carrying out greater modifica-tions to existing buildings. The elementary indicators for assessing the energy perfor-mance are thermal and lighting technical properties of structures and the parameters of technical fittings’ operation in buildings. Fulfilment of the requirements will be docu-mented by an energy performance certifi-cate. Therefore, it can be assumed that a greater emphasis will also be placed on durable and high-quality installations of connection details in structures. Should this aspect be underestimated, it would have a negative impact on the building’s overall characteristics and therefore also its value.

Unsatisfactory condition On many buildings nowadays still pre-vails a solution, when a joint is only foamed-in with polyurethane foam and plastered over from the outside as well as from the inside. Although dry polyurethane foam itself provides good thermal insulation, many building contractors still perceive it as a sufficient and effective joint filling solution. However, the reverse is actually true. Ther-mal insulation that is unprotected against the adverse effects of weather and air moisture from the interior significantly increases its moistness and therefore also its thermal conductivity. This, in combination with low temperatures in winter, is usually the star-ting mechanism for the degrading processes of materials and the cause leading towards

the decrease of an overall detail’s life. If any of the connecting joint’s sealing functi-ons is violated, then thermal bridges and plaster cracks appear, the joint’s tightness diminishes and mould grows. Last but not least, sound transmission through the detail increases. This may occur with windows of all common groups of materials ( made from aluminium, PVC, wood and of their combina-tions ) as well as AL/glass facades.

Detail design

It is an absolute necessity to design a solu-tion, select products and consider feasibility together with a coordination of contractors’ works from the point of creating an overall high-quality construction work. This applies especially for the creation of a connection solution for component structures that main-tains functionality over a long period of time. The key to successful implementation usu-ally lies in detailed project documentation, which, if elaborated all the way through to the phase of details, significantly contributes towards an optimisation of the construction progress.

Requirements for the connecting joint’s function

• zero leakage into the joint • zero air transmission through the joint • effective evaporation of the joint; mini mization of potential condensation inside joints • enables dilatation movement • thermal and sound insulation

Materials

Selected suitable sealants, prefabricated round profiles/backing rods, strips, foils, adhesive tapes or special profiles may gene-rally be used as sealing materials. Vapour tight for interior and on the contrary water proof but vapour open, weather resistant tapes or foils for the exterior may comprise of plastics, aluminium, elastomers, bitumi-nous material and their various combinations with verified tightness. The fact that “ther-mal insulation” such as PUR foams or mine-ral wool insulation are only able to compens-ate dilatation movements of construction elements to a limited extent and therefore are not a sufficient solution for connecting joint detail, is an important point that should not be neglected.

Internal barrier Function area External barrier

water-tight membrane thermal insulation

Principle

The most convenient solution is usually to layer several materials in a joint, as stated in the product diagram below, which in mutual interaction maintain the joint in a completely dry and functional condition. The impermeable layer is usually located on the internal side of the insulati-on plane, which prevents air flow into the structure or joint. Highly permeable and at the same time driving rain penetration resistant materials are then located on the external side. Connections and joints must be sealed by effective sealing materials with required life, and weather effects, dilatation movements and volume changes resistance. From the point of view of water vapour penetration and the risk of water vapour condensation in a structure, it is usually convenient to arrange the layers in a structure in order of a gradual decrease of the diffusion resistance factor of the layers in the direction from the internal surface (from the interior). However, this does not apply to all materials available on the market. A sealing foil with a variable water vapour penetration tightness value may be considered as very exceptional amongst the materials on today’s market. Such materials enable application as an external as well as internal barrier of a joint. Their advantage is amongst others in lower requirements for contractors’ competence and facilitation of detail planning.

Advantages of correct sealing

• energy saving thanks to prevention of thermal bridges and close to zero air transmission • maximum reliability and durability of the joint • reduction of the level of sound transmission through the joint • prevention of moisture penetration and growth of mould in the joint• elimination of possible water condensation on interior surfaces

The most suitable materials for forming the primary protection against driving rain penetration into a joint under the effects of weather and are also highly diffusion permeable, which allow for evaporation of the connecting joint.

The space between the window frame and wall should be fi lled with a high-quality thermal and sound insulating material.

Facade sealing system

Professional sealing of facade connecting joints

This complex sealing system for “connecting joints” of facade structures offers time tested and proven materials in a combina-tion, which guarantees that the joint is per-fectly sealed. It meets the criteria of current standards determined mainly by the require-ments on the thermal protection of buildings in accordance with local norms following the EU Council directive 2002/91/EC. The product composition inside the connecting joint complies with the universally applicable principle “inside tighter than outside”, whe-re an air-tight foil is on the inside of the joint, which prevents air moisture (water vapours) from penetrating the joint’s thermal insula-tion material. This function is fulfilled by the illbruck FF 210 Butyl Foil. The outside of the joint is protected by a foil with maximum resistance against the effects of weather, wi-th a long-lasting UV stability, tight against the attacks of driven rain – the illbruck FF 220 or FF 220 HP with optimised water vapour permeability, which allows the detail to be adequately ventilated. The joint between these two membranes must of course be filled with a suitable thermally insulating material, such as for instance mineral wool or PUR foam of suitable properties. Materi-als of both foils are produced on the basis of synthetic rubber, containing also black, filler, antioxidants and vulcanising agents. Thanks

System advantages:

• Excellent resistance against ageing • Long life and UV resistance of the exterior foil • Difference in diffusion resistances of the internal and external barrier prevents condensation and develop- ment of mould inside the joint • 100% waterproof and air tight, guaranteeing correct functioning of the joint’s thermal insulation • High mechanical resistance of the foil materials against puncturing • Transfer of dilatation movements in longitudinal and transversal directions • Integral foil type identification preven- ting interchanging during application

to their chemical composition, the materials are very elastic, resilient, flexible and at the same time puncture resistant. They are also extremely resistant against ageing, even when permanently exposed to the effects of weather, UV radiation, temperature fluctua-tions and various chemicals. EPDM (illbruck FF 220 / FF 220 HP) and butyl (illbruck FF 210) foils do not contain any softeners, and hence there is no risk of migration of these substances into the surrounding surfaces. Both foils have been supplied by our compa-ny to construction projects for more than 10 years as water and vapour insulation for both interior and exterior applications.

illbruck Duo Window Foil – 1 window foil for 2 applications

illbruck Duo Window Foil is the world’s first and only window foil which changes its water vapour parameters according to ambient temperature conditions to ensure the connecting joint’s all year-round dry insulation. The foil’s climatic ability enables a permanent drying out of the connecting joint by altering its permeability towards penetrati-on by water vapour according to ambient humidi-ty. The higher the relative humidity around the foil, the less water vapour-proof it is and vice versa. When the indoor temperature is higher than the outdoor temperature, Duo Window Foil prevents air moisture from penetrating the connection joint and at the same time enables the connecting joint’s ventilation into the exterior. The rule applies that moisture diffuses from the warmer side into the colder side. When the indoor temperature is lower than the outdoor temperature, and moisture transmits through the connecting joint’s thermal insulation from the warmer outdoor side through to the cooler indoor side, Duo Window Foil ena-bles the drying out into the interior!Owing to this unique property, it is possible to use

illbruck Duo Window Foil EW – the simplest application of window foils

In the case of classic standard window foils marked for instance Window Foil interior version E, the adhesive is normally applied to one side of the foil, which can be glued only in the L shape. Version W on the other hand only allows for the foil to be glued in the Z shape. The specification for Duo Window Foil EW combines both standard window foil versions in one and can be applied in either the L shape or the Z shape. Therefore with the new innovative design of illbruck Duo Window Foil EW, you really need only one foil to make a complete insulation of the window connecting joint.

a single foil from the external as well as the inter-nal side of the connecting joint.

Advantages of illbruck Duo Window Foil:

• 10 year guarantee for the connecting joint’s functionality • Dynamic moisture transfer from the con- necting joint thanks to its variable “sd” value • Single product design for interior and exterior usage = removes accidental mix-up possibility • maximum reliability of the connecting joint functionality all year round • optimised stock control • energy saving

Window sealing system i3

Window sealing system i3

It is necessary to pay attention to the correct sealing of a connecting joint when installing windows. It is not sufficient to just fill a joint with PUR foam because it brings numerous problems in the future. To provide preven-tion against a growth of mould and proper thermal fucionality in joints, we recommend that you to use the window sealing system i3. This system complies with all modern requirements on energy saving and joint sealing. It has been verified by independent institutes for window technology. The mutu-al reactions of the components under extre-me conditions were also tested. The system was assessed as a whole. Nine system components for internal, central as well as external sealing may be arbitrarily combined according to the individual needs of a par-ticular construction project. Independently from the window frames material, you can decide, which of the products from the sys-tem illbruck „i3“ you wish to use.

Advantages of the window sealing system i3

• 10 year guarantee for the connecting joint’s functionality • return on investment within the guarantee period thanks to energy saving • substantial reduction of noise level • prevention of moisture penetration and growth of mould • 3 options of foil installation • the EW variant of foils enables easy installation and detail formation

illbruck PUR gun foam

Forms the primary protection against driving rain penetration into a joint under the effects of weather. The designed materials are also highly vapour-permeable and allow for evaporation of the connecting joint, in which water vapour may accumulate and condensate.

The space between the window frame and wall should be fi lled with a high-quality thermal and sound insulating material.

Serves as an air as well as moisture penetration resistant barrier for the joint and at the same time, the principle “inside tighter than outside” applies. The differences in window sealing system i3 materials’ tightness are selected with an emphasis to the greatest possible difference between the joint’s exterior and the interior side. The recommended difference in the tightness of both materials indicated by the Sd value should be at least 10x.

All manipulators supplied by our company operate on the principle of a vacuum bet-ween the base surface and the manipulator’s rubber vacuum sleeve. Firstly, place the manipulator on a prepared surface and then use the integrated lever or the built-in vacuum pump to suck. The next step is the object’s transportation itself. To release the manipulator, use the integrated lever or the vacuum pump valve (differs by type). The base surfaces must be dry, clean, free from any grease and loose particles. It is also ne-cessary that the base surfaces are air-tight, i.e. impermeable.

Vacuum Manipulators

We also supply:• clamps – ideal help e.g. for the temporary fixing of bonded or otherwise worked objects. Clamps are supplied with metal as well as plastic jaws. • spatulas designed to tool and wipe off any excess material • setting blocks – durable and strong plastic setting blocks suited for glaziers, window/ door frame manufacturers etc.
