itisastrongtemptationforustocelebrateChristmasbeforeChristmas.Sooften,whenChristmasfinallydoesarriveweareleftwithanemptyfeeling,becausewehadbeencelebratingChristmasforweeksprior.Wethentendtoignoreandmisstheimportanceofthefeastforwhichwehadbeenpreparing.Asweenterintothisperiod,maywedoourbesttoleaveandpre-pareaplacewithinourheartsforthecomingoftheKing.Christnolongerwalksthisearthasheoncedid,buthisIncarnationalpresenceremainshereamongusintheHolyEucharist.ThereceptionofHolyCommu-nionisacallforustocontinuetheworkofChristinthisworld.MaythisAdventSeasonserveasaperiodofrestandreflectiononhowwearetocontinuebeingthehandsandthefeetofChristinthisworldtrans-formedbyHisIncarnation. Onechangetopleasenote,theAdventwreathhasbeenre-donethisyear.Wearereturningtothe

moretraditionalGermantraditionofusingredcandles,ratherthanthepurple/rosecandles.IfyoulookupimagesofPopeBenedictandhisAdventwreath,youwilldiscoverthispractice.TheredservestoremindusofthepurposeforChrist’scomingintotheworld,theredemptionofmankindthroughthecross.ThusservingasawaytoconnectChristmasandEaster. Finally,pleaseseethisnotefromBr.BrentregardingmusicduringAdvent:AsweentertheseasonofAdvent,atimeofpenanceandpreparation,theorganwillonceagaingo“silent.”Thismeans,inaccordwiththeChurch’smandates,theorganwillonlybeusedtoaccompanysinging.Therewillbenopreludes,postludes,orimprovisationsduringanyoftheMasses.Theextrasilenceisagoodopportunityforextraprayer. Inaddition,theorganwillhaveamuchmoresubduedsoundthroughouttheseason.Thisdoesn’tmeanyoushouldsingsofter!Youmayjusthavetolistenhardertonotdragbehindtheorgan’sspeed.Partofcongregationalsingingisthatweallmustsingtogetherandatthesametime–individualsshouldn’tbeheardaboveanyoneelse–theentirecongregationshouldsoundasonebodywiththeorganleading.
