Marti’s Message
Dear Member Friends, The summer has just flown by and I have been kept busy with a family reunion in New Jersey and family visiting with us here in Deerfield Beach. Grand Kids, nieces, and neph-ews are growing like weeds; don’t know where the time goes. Rita Masi, Angela Comotto, Sally Coleren, and I proudly represented our club at the GFWC International Conven-tion at the Hollywood Westin Resort. We met so many in-teresting women as we volunteered as hostesses at the Saturday Banquet. It was a Class One Act! District 13 was well represented as were all the districts in Florida. I am really looking forward to our September meeting and planning with you some of the things we would like to do this year. Come ready to make suggestions for activities: Arts, Conservation, Home Life, Education, International Is-sues, & Public Issues. Don’t forget to send items to Bett Willett ([email protected]) for our newsletter. Your input is greatly welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks for all you do! Marti

Smart Thieves Some people left their car in the long-term parking at an airport while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car's registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people's home and robbed
it. If you are going to leave the car in long-term parking, do NOT leave the registration/insurance cards in it or your remote garage door opener.

Love
Love is an attitude,
Love is a prayer
for a soul in sorrow,
a heart in despair.
Love gives water to
a cup that’s run dry.
Love reaches low
as it can reach high.
Seeks not her own
at expense of another.
Love reaches God
when it reaches
our brother.

Wow, where did the summer go. I know the heat is still with us but it will be fall be-fore we know it. I am planning on the best year ever. Just a reminder, since I will be do-ing scholar- ships this year it is not too soon to keep an eye out for our best and brightest students from the Deerfield Beach area. If you know of anyone we will keep them on our radar to consider for our scholarship.

Marti McGeary
Marti joined the GFWC
Woman’s Club of Deerfield
Beach in 200, because of its
long history in the city and its
focus on education, self-
improvement, and safety and
well-being of women and chil-
dren. Since joining she has
worn many hats serving as an
officer. She is now President,
2012-2014. Marti has been GFWC/FFWC District 13
Director and President’s Project Chair. She has repre-
sented our club many times at the GFWC/Fall Board of
Directors and Spring Convention in Orlando.
Marti (Martha Ann Boyd) McGeary was born on
April 13, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA. She is the youngest
of five children. Her family moved around for a few
years before buying a home in Darby, PA in 1951. She
entered the 2nd
grade at Ridge Avenue Elementary
School. Her fondest memories there were painting the
school windows for holidays, especially Christmas, fun
at scout meetings, playing sliding board tag and gully
tag across the street from her house, and of course, jump
rope, jacks, step and wire ball. All the kids, Marti in-
cluded, were always fascinated by the Tarzan rope that
someone managed to put up. Every summer some kid
managed to fall off and break an arm. It was scary to
swing out in a wide circle, but oh, so much fun! If you
didn’t do it you were sure to be dared. Games were sim-
ple, friendships lasting, and school and church were at
the heart of all activities.
Junior High began in 7th
grade and meant a dif-
ferent school and many new friends. Making the cheer-
leading squad was special, along with sporting events
and “dances in the gym.” In Senior High Marti’s interest
in sports and cheerleading continued, but also getting
good grades and planning for college was important.
Marti was President of the Future Teachers of
America, a member of the National Honor Society, a rep-
resentative to the Model United Nations at University of
Pennsylvania, and on the Yearbook Committee. She was
fortunate enough to get a teaching scholarship and grad-
uated with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from
West Chester University.
In 1963, Marti married her grade school “boy-
friend”, Jim McGeary. They moved to Washington
Twp., NJ and raised three children. She was active in the
community, involved with her children’s activities, and
enjoyed sewing, art, and refinishing furniture. She taught
eighteen years at Wedgewood Elementary School before
retiring in 1998 and moving to Deerfield Beach, FL.
Marti is a member of St. Ambrose Parish and
volunteers each year for the carnival to raise funds for
the school. Her love for the environment and the beach
led her to join The Original Save Our Beach PAC and
then form the not-profit organization which she serves as
Co-Chair. After losing her bid for mayor in 2004, she
served four years on the Deerfield Beach Planning &
Zoning Committee. She regularly attends Commission
Meetings and volunteers for other charitable events.
Marti and Jim celebrate their Golden Wedding
Anniversary this year. They have five grandchildren,
three boys and two girls. The oldest granddaughter, De-
vany McGeary, now lives in Deerfield Beach and is a
club member.
