President’s Corner Dear Members of the Antioch Woman’s Club, Our summer has been eventful and hopefully we are all surviving the heat. Your new board and chairwomen are continuing to work during the

summer to get started on the right foot for the coming club year of 2012–2013. We are all new in our positions, and we all are striving to make our club fulfilling and successful in our endeavors. Please be kind to us as we start our new journey. We are going to try to start a reading program under the direction of the new Education Chairs, Mary Beth Walsh and Jean Haling. Hopefully, we can start soon with your help. We will need committed volunteers. We rely on all our members volunteering their services for the club activities. Even though we all are growing in age, we must not stop growing in mind and will. We have talented intelligent women in our club. We would like to use your talents in order to be a successful club. New members don’t be shy; ask how you can be of help. Don’t wait to be asked. We have many ways to put your talents to work. The Art Committee Judy Schieck LADIES!! DON'T FORGET TO BRING

YOUR WONDERFUL PHOTOS FOR THE 2013 CALENDAR IN SEPTEMBER. The photos will be judged by the membership at the September meeting. If possible, try to submit horizontal photos, preferably in color, and 5" x 7" in size. Only 2 photos per person, please. At least 13 photos will be chosen: one for the cover and one for each month. We may need 12 more, depending on the cost. This means more of you need to submit your photos. So come on, Ladies, show us your artistic flair--that eye that equals a camera’s lens! Any questions call Judy Schieck 847-395-8120 See you in September!!!!

Public Issues Susan Straley Pam Brown As in prior years, Public Issues has a number of projects planned for the fall. We look forward to your participation and generosity in the projects we sponsor. The focus of these activities is assisting those less fortunate than we are. At the September Opening luncheon, we will be collecting items for Operation Backpack. Please bring backpacks (new or slightly used) or school supplies. These will be donated to Open Arms Mission for needy children in Antioch, Lake Villa, and Lindenhurst. October’s project is “Make a Difference Day.” Please bring paper products and/or toiletries to the October meeting. These will be donated to A Safe Place, which is our local Domestic Violence Shelter.

In November, we will pass a basket for cash donations to be used for Christmas gifts for the VA Hospital. During the December Christmas Luncheon, our committee is requesting donations of unwrapped Christmas gifts for A Safe Place. Coupons Throughout the 2012-2013 year, we will be gathering coupons to send to military posts. This is one way of showing our overseas military families that we appreciate the sacrifices they are making for the defense of our country. This activity will be headed up by Sigrid Brueggemann. Please deliver your coupons to Sigrid at the monthly meetings. The coupons should be sorted into five categories: (1) Baby Products, (2) Food, (3) Health and Beauty, (4) Household Goods, or (5) Pets. Please place in and envelope labeled with the appropriate category. Coupons must be within 3 months of the expiration date. Also, be sure to include your name and the number of hours you spent cutting and sorting with your coupon submission. Veterans Affairs The first Monday of the month (October through May), volunteers from our club will car pool to the North Chicago Veteran’s Medical Hospital to play Bingo and serve a treat to the veterans. Please contact Bonnie Bakutis if you are able to participate in this worthwhile activity. International Outreach Mary Ware Lee Anderson and I would like to thank Joanne Dugenske, Tiffany Voracek, Karen Floeter, Hilda Wollschlaeger, Lois Werner, Barbara Beese, Marilyn Bies, Erika Rehberger, Kitch Pecci, Karen Noland, and Nancy Morici for all of their work in cutting, sewing, and coming up with great color schemes for 17 quilts. A special shout out goes to Evelyn Miller who tied all of them. We are so grateful for your support and hard work. We will try to meet the third Wednesday of each month at the Meeting House from 9-12 AM beginning in September and going through May (not December). If anyone has any material they would like to donate, we can always use it. Everyone is welcome to come; if you do not sew, we need your eye for color, cutting and pinning, and putting together kits.

Our Spring Art Show was a huge success!

This year besides the quilts, we will try to work on pillowcases for our soldiers, children's dresses, and children's hospital gowns. If you have any questions, call me at 847-838-5677

International Affairs Lorraine Oren In July, 2012, 1907 stamps were mailed to the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Frankfort, Illinois. The Sisters sell these stamps to collectors and use the

monies to support their areas of service to the poor of Brazil. However, I received notice today that the Franciscan Sisters are no longer collecting stamps for the missions as postage has increased and they have no sisters who can cut and sort the stamps. They thanked us for our support and said the stamps I mailed in July will be processed. Stamp donors for this mailing were: Linda Bakula, Sigrid Bueggemann, Judy McKillip, Nancy Morici, Karen Noland, Lorraine Oren, Florence Pedersen, Erika Reinberger, Sally Rodgers, Mary Ware, Hilda Woelschlaeger, and several anonymous donors. Thanks to all who have helped with this endeavor.

Health and Home Life Joan Foss During the coming club year, the health committee will be starting a new project: we will be forming a group that wishes to

learn CPR from the Antioch Rescue Squad. I will be giving more details during our opening lunch. We will continue to support breast cancer awareness by participating in the Relay for Life and wearing pink in October. In February we will encourage everyone to wear red in recognition of heart health month. In January we will be going to Winchester House to throw a birthday party for the residents. Everyone is welcome, and the time and date will be announced later. Every club meeting I hope to have some information to pass on that will involve ways to keep us happy, healthy and active. I'm looking forward to my new position and hope that if you

have any suggestions for topics or projects, you will let me know. Domestic Violence Audrey Lyle

It may sound like a long time away, but it will come fast. We will be holding another clothing drive in November. We hope you start accumulating both winter and summer clothing for women and children. They use and appreciate everything we give them. Below is an excerpt from one of the thank you letters we received from Safe Place.

"It is not just monetary donations that ensure that our organization can continue to provide for victims. It is also the items that so many supporters provide us on a daily basis - the paper products and toiletries that make everyday life possible, the clothing that keeps victims warm, and the food that nourishes women and children who left everything behind when they fled violent homes seeking safety. It is the special touches like Mother's Day gifts and holiday toys that help to brighten lives during times of turbulent change, those momentary bits of pampering in the midst of struggle; and those sunny afternoons spent playing basketball while participating in a summer camp that helps children who are homeless to have a summer "just like any other kid."

This year let's try to be as generous as possible to help these families in need.

Chair Betty Chornoby chat at an AWC meeting.

Conservation Karen Nolan Hope you all are staying cool and enjoying your summer. I am happy to have Betty Chornoby as my co-chair for the next two years. We are

hoping to start at least one new program involving conservation this year. Our first project will be our Fall Adopt-A-Highway cleanup. We have chosen Wednesday, September 19th with a rain date of Thursday, September 20th. Please sign up at the opening luncheon to join us. The more the merrier!

Book Club Marlene Fernandez Just held our Annual Club Picnic and it was a fun time (in spite of being a tad bit warm out there…okay…sweltering). Audrey Lyle was a super hostess (after all it was her house). She had everything organized just BEAUTIFULLY to go with her beautiful home. Thank you so much, Audrey. Lunch was outside on her patio and the book exchange was indoors (air conditioned of course) and we did a water balloon toss in the front yard (for all her neighbors to see!) Let it be known we still have great giggling ability. Since it was a "Luau Theme," we had our share of pineapples, salads and fruit. We also had chicken tenders and fantastic desserts. All excellent. Sorry some could not attend, and we missed you all. We really missed Fran Groff but understand she was having fun elsewhere!

Our next book club will be the 3rd Thursday of the month, September 20th, at the Senior Center. Hope to see you there. Everyone in the club is welcome to attend. All you need to do is bring a book and a short review on it and be willing to pass the book. Book reviews will now include all types of e-books or Library media. Book reviews start at 1pm. Bag lunch or order out at noon! The Book Club Scholarship Committee has named Oksana Hawryluk for the $2,000,00 scholarship. She is the daughter of Eva Hawryluk, one of our club members. She is currently a Teachers Assistant and attends Dominican University. I have invited her to our opening luncheon and she has accepted to come and meet with everyone. I would like to thank the committee for an outstanding job. See you in September. Call me at (262) 862-2767 for more info. Operation Afghanistan Pat Rung In September, November, February and April, I will be collecting for Operation Afghanistan. Our troops are still over there and in harm’s way daily. They need our support now more than ever. I once again remind all that we have many female military members, so female hygiene products are very much appreciated and needed. Sample sizes are great; small packages are easy to put in one’s backpack. The troops appreciate everything; I will have a list on the table for members to take for future contributions. The list includes things like note pads, pens, notebooks, stationery, stamps, and envelopes of all sizes. Ladies, check your stashes and see what you can share. If you are unable to bring the items to the meeting, give me a call at 847-356-9398 (Pat Rung), and I will gladly come by and pick up your contribution.

Senior Fall Prevention A simple fall can change your life. Just ask any of the thousands of older men and women who fall each year and break a bone (sometimes called fracture).

Getting older can bring lots of changes. Sight, hearing, muscle strength, coordination and reflexes aren’t what they once were. Balance can be affected by diabetes and heart disease, or by problems with your circulation, thyroid or nervous system. Some medicines can cause dizziness. Any of these things can make a fall more likely.

Then there is osteoporosis, a disease that makes bones thin and likely to break easily. Osteoporosis is a major reason for broken bones in women past menopause. It also affects older men. When your bones are fragile even a minor fall can cause one or more bones to break. Although people with osteoporosis must be very careful to avoid falls, all of us need to take extra care as we get older. There are simple things you can do to help prevent most falls.

Take the Right Steps Falls and accidents seldom "just happen." The more you take care of your overall health and well-being, the more likely you’ll be to lower your chances of falling. Here are a few hints:

• Ask your doctor about a special test called a bone mineral density test that tells how strong your bones are. If need be, your doctor can prescribe new medications that will help make your bones stronger and harder to break.

• Talk with your doctor and plan an exercise program that is right for you. Regular exercise helps keep you strong and improves muscle tone. It also helps keep your joints, tendons, and ligaments flexible. Mild weight-bearing exercises such as walking, climbing stairs may even slow bone loss from osteoporosis.

• Have your vision and hearing tested often. Even small changes in sight and hearing can make you less stable. • Find out about the possible side effects of medicines you take. Some medicines might affect your coordination or

balance. • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink. Even a small amount can affect your balance and reflexes. • Always stand up slowly after eating, lying down, or resting. Getting up too quickly can cause your blood pressure to

drop, which can make you feel faint. • Don’t let your home get too cold or too hot...it can make you dizzy. In the summer if your home is not air-conditioned.

Keep cool with an electric fan, drink lots of liquids, and limit exercise. In the winter, keep the nighttime temperature at 65° or warmer.

• Use a cane, walking stick, or walker to help you feel steadier when you walk. • Wear rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes that fully support your feet. Wearing only socks or shoes with smooth soles on

stairs or waxed floors can be unsafe. • Hold the handrails when you use the stairs. If you must carry something while you’re going up or down, hold it in

one hand and use the handrail with the other. • Don’t take chances. Stay away from a freshly washed floor. And don’t stand on a chair or table to reach something

that is too high. Use a "reach stick" instead. Reach sticks are special grabbing tools that you can buy at many hardware or most medical supply stores.

• Find out about buying a home monitoring system service. Usually, you wear a button on a chain around your neck. If you fall or need emergency help, you just push the button to alert the service. Emergency staff is then sent to your home. You can find local "medical alarm" services in your yellow pages.

Helpful Hints for Printing Your Newsletter Sign-Up Sheets When you click on your print button (either the icon or from the menu), there is a pop-up window that appears. If you only want to print a single page or range of pages, before clicking on “ok,” select the pages you want to print in the print- range section of the pop-up window or select “current page” in the pop-up window to print the page you are looking at. In a similar fashion, there is an option in the pop-up window not to print in color. It usually says something like “Print color as black” or “Print in grayscales” or something similar. Chose one of these options if you do not want to print in color. ****You will find the forms you need to print and mail on the next page.
