President’s Message

February 2018

What's your elevator speech??

Here are some great ones from fellow GFWC clubs…

Let me tell you a little bit about what I do with my woman’s club, GFWC! That stands for General Federation of Woman’s clubs. GFWC has a positive and powerful impact globally, nationally and locally! We’ve been around for over 100 years! In my local club, we like to socialize, playing Bunco, ice cream socials, field trips and luncheons! (It’s a great group of ladies of all ages!), but what we really enjoy is doing service projects. We support Hacienda Girls’ Ranch, Canine Companions for Independence, the Linus Pro-ject and many more. We have fun doing fund raisers, getting out in the community for hands on service and going to workshops and conventions. We’re extremely well organized, have fantastic leadership and each club has autonomy to work on projects that are meaningful to them. If I had to sum it up in a few words, I’d say GFWC is FUN, FELLOWSHIP and MEANINGFUL SERVICE! Why don’t you come with me to our next meeting? I’ll pick you up! “GFWC Melbourne Woman’s Club”.

If you have a minute, I’d love to tell you about a wonderful organization in which you can make friends for life while also volunteering to make your community a better place. It’s called GFWC Florida, and the GFWC stands for General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The GFWC is an international organization; but since we live in Florida, your membership would be in a GFWC Woman’s Club in your local Florida District. With the great variety of service projects, you can do alone or in committee, long term or short term you’re sure to find the best way to use your interests

An elevator speech does not have to be long it just needs to be to the point and relay an effective message to the person you are talking to. With a new year comes new members, so what’s your eleva-tor speech?? I would love to hear it

Heifer International is another of our Partnerships that we have donated money to. This pas year we have

donated a total of $600.00 to Heifer which has enabled them to empower women in Cambodia, Vietnam,

Haiti and Rwanda by educating them about sustainable farming and sound business practices and give them

the gift of an animal, trees or seeds Heifer works in partnership with communities to give people the tools

they need to help themselves – over the long term—in ways that lead them toward true security, self-

reliance and prosperity.

They have found that empowering women, in particular , has an especially strong return on investment.

Tapping into their innate abilities = showing them and their families the intrinsic value of their skills and

contributions – builds confidence and inspires respect from husbands and children.

Our gift of $600.00 this past year empowers women to become a force for positive change that reverber-

ates across communities, national borders and generations. This is definitely a way we, the Tampa Wom-

an’s Club make a difference in the world.

Upcoming Activities – we are working on planning the brunch for the English Language Students at Tampa

University later this Spring. More on that later.

As announced at the January, 4, 2018, general membership meeting our rental rates have changed. We

made this change hoping we would garner more interest in our venue and so far we’ve had exactly that.

Our new rates are as follows:

Sunday - Thursday $975 + 7% FL state sales tax.

Friday, Saturday and Holidays $1,975 + 7% FL state sales tax.

Deposit required to date: $500.

TWC also offers a 10% discount to active and retired military personnel with a current military identification

card. We also offer the same discount to non-profit organizations.

Rentals include use of the entire building, kitchen (including refrigerator and freezer + ice in icemaker) and

grounds; security; set-up and clean-up of tables and chairs inside the building. TWC furniture is not to be

used outside on the grounds.

Rentals do not include use of TWC cooking utensils; flatware; china; glassware; pitchers; ice buckets.

Members may rent our venue at a 35% discounted rate of the above stated rates. Member rentals do not

include security, hence the discount. If a member chooses to utilize our security personnel they will pay the

above stated rates or they may receive the 35% discount and hire security personnel of their choice.

Please remember this clubhouse is supported through our rentals, not through donations from the public.

Therefore it’s important that we all “sell” our clubhouse at every opportunity. There are rental brochures in

the office that state all of this information.

When you have questions or concerns about rentals please be sure to share those with me either through

an email or a call to my cell phone. This information is included in our TWC yearbook.

USO Which stands for United Service Organization is not just a Hollywood Program Organization.

Since 1941, the United Service Organizations has stood by our troops through every step of their service. From deployment to rehabilitation and reintegration, we're there for soldiers and their families. Because we are not a government agency, we rely on generous support

of funded programs and services that best fit the needs of our troops.

Their MISSION OF CONNECTION

The USO strengthens America’s military service members

by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.

USO Transition Services

When Americans complete their military service, the USO is there to support the transition back to civilian life. Those leaving the military need a plan to reintegrate into the communities they are returning to, a civil-ian career path and a strong family. USO Transition Services exists to help the nearly half a million service members and their families who start the process of transitioning out of the military each year. Designed to help the young, single service member,

as well as the 25-year careerist with a family, USO Transition Services is a roadmap to help navigate whatev-er transition journey lies ahead.

250,000 Service members will transition into civilian communities each year during the next four years.

There does not have to be a war for the USO to continue to support our military and their needs.

GFWC TAMPA WOMEN'S Club is proud to support this organization.

Domestic Violence ~ Linda Reece

February is Teen Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we have a special treat for you. Home Life chair, JoAnne Leal, has agreed to allow the domestic violence committee to perform a play. Many of you remember Tomi Reneau and her play 3 Ladies. We are going to share that with all of you—with a slight addition: We will call it 3 Ladies and a Girl to honor Teen Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Hope to see you all here!

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART AWARENESS MONTH

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. Every year, one in four deaths are caused by heart disease.

The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. We can make a difference in our community by using this month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it-- both at home and in the community.

Here are just a few ideas:

• Encourage families to make small changes, like using spices to season their food instead of salt. Lead by example. Five numbers that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: T

Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their health care provider determine their risk for developing, or controlling, cardiovascular diseases.

• Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of our school day. This can help students start good habits early.

• Ask our doctors and nurses to be leaders and their communities by speaking out frequently about ways to prevent heart disease.

• Support women by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 2nd, 2018. By doing so, you help support educational programs to increase women's awareness and critical research to dis-cover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.

For additional information, and to learn more about "Know Your Numbers", go the American Heart Associa-tion website. Our hearts depend on it!

During his priesthood, Emperor Claudius II banned marriages because he thought married men were a bad sol-dier. But he, St. Valentine defied the order and arranged marriages in secret, and this led to his arrest and sen-tence to death. He suffered a very painful death… was beheaded.

How Did Valentine Day Start? There are various theories on how the Valentine Day came to be. Some of them include:

While in prison, he fell in love with a jailer’s daughter, and when he was being taken to be killed on the 14th Feb-ruary, he wrote a love letter to her and signed it “From your Valentine” and there, the name Valentine for the lover was born.

Another theory has it that the Catholic church used St. Valentine’s martyrdom to Christianize the old Roman Lu-percalia, a pagan festival held around the middle of February, Valentine’s day in remembrance of this Marty.

Another theory links Valentine to two Roman saints, both known by the name Valentine and both unconnected to romantic love. The first mention of St. Valentine as a romantic holiday is seen in Chaucer’s writings of 1382. During this period, there was concentration on a certain love which was referred to as courtly love. Here, the Knights gave to their maidens and celebrated beauty in songs while they are far away. By 1840s Valentine Day as a romantic holiday had taken root in most English speaking countries. This was referred to as the cupid’s golden age. Cards and gifts were exchanged.
