Off limits for nowA 32-year-old Thomastown woman had her car impounded last Thursday night after she was caught speeding nearly 20km/h over the limit and with a blood alcohol reading of 0.205 per cent. The womans car was intercepted by Epping highway patrol on Edgars Road about 8pm after being clocked travelling at 87km/h in a 70km/h zone. Officers breath-tested the woman, who returned a reading more than four times the legal limit. She was also found to be driving on a disqualified licence and will be charged on summons to appear before the courts at a later date.
Ramadan doneMelbournes largest Eid festival celebrating the end of Ramadan will be held this weekend in Dallas. The two-day event will run from noon-10pm on August 2 and 3 at Ilim College, 30 Inverloch Street, Dallas. For more information, call 0413 098 133.
Bikies not all badMotorcycle and scooter riders from across Melbourne will gather at Browns Corner Hotel, Coburg, next month to address recommendations of a parliamentary inquiry. Organisers, the Independent Riders Group, claim the recommendations contradict a number of aspects of new Victorian government laws banning some common overseas riding practices and slapping special taxes on motorcycle owners. The free seminar will start at noon on Sunday, August 9. www.facebook.com/independentridersgroup

Craigieburns State Emergency Service is recruiting new members.
With six graduates having just completed training, the unit has a new course starting August 19.
Craigieburn SES controller Martin Ledwich says volunteering is a great way to know what to do when disaster strikes.
There are roles for everyone, from working the chainsaw to communications and even public education, Mr Ledwich said.
New recruit Sam Boult has just completed training and is keen to get out in the field.
I wanted a new challenge in life and to give back to my community, Sam said.
SES was the perfect avenue for that. Its very welcoming, challenging, fulfilling and I love it.
Volunteers receive accredited training for their roles, including learning rescue skills, how to operate chainsaws and how to secure a roof in a storm.
Inquiries: [email protected] or go to www.craigieburnses.com

Do you want a rigorous academic program situated in a safe, serene learning environment dedicated to your daughter?
The National Broadband Network (NBN) has come to Tullamarine.
More than 10,000 homes and businesses in parts of Tullamarine and Shepparton were switched on to the NBN last week, including flight and driving simulator manufacturer CKAS Mechatronics in Tullamarine.
CKAS managing director Chris Kasapis said the NBN would allow the business to increase productivity.
The NBN is a big deal for us, he said. We work with customers in pretty much every country you can imagine, which means we need the highest speeds and the most reliable data connections we can get.
We have already been able to use new applications, such as real-time desktop sharing.
allowing better collaboration, support and training for our employees. We expect to see savings in time and money as we reduce the need to travel to international jobs because we can connect with overseas clients instantly.
About 50,000 Victorian home and business owners are now connected to the NBN.
The NBN has the potential to be a key driver of growth in Australias declining manufacturing industry, NBN Co spokesman Trent Williams said. Access to fast, reliable broadband can provide new opportunities for innovative businesses to create niche products, expand into new markets and reduce operational costs.

A gay man claims he was bullied and belittled by Hume council youth workers at an event for people attracted to the same sex.
The council denies the claim, which stems from incidents at Glitter Ball, a council-based initiative established late last year to replace the Same Sex Attracted Friendly Environment (SSAFE).
The SSAFE program, which promoted safe places for same-sex-attracted people aged 14-25 to interact and meet their peers, had closed because of funding cuts.
Craigieburn man Harley Merson, 20, told Star Weekly that youth workers had belittled and babied people who attended last years Glitter Ball.
I wasnt treated very fairly, Mr Merson said. There were two youth workers. One treated me like I didnt know anything and the other one didnt pay me and my ideas any attention.
Mr Merson said that after struggling with coming out during high school, he had hoped the councils new initiative would bridge the social gap and dissuade the community from hurling homophobic slurs.
But he alleges the youth workers acted like high-school kids.
I felt very uncomfortable and unwanted, he said. I wanted to make a change, but the youth workers were not trained or equipped to deal with same-sex-attracted people.
Mr Merson said he had had a lot of personal difficulties around his sexuality during the time he was involved with the Glitter Ball.
Being bullied, harassed and belittled by youth workers only added to his sense of isolation, he said.
Mr Merson claimed the verbal harassment continued during this years youth services forum.
He said he was refused speaking rights and forum leaders spoke horribly of [him] in front of everyone in the room.
The youth workers concerned would not comment. But a council spokesman, Michael Sinclair, said Mr Mersons complaints had been followed up and treated at all times with the utmost seriousness and confidentiality.
He said a mutual agreement had been reached by both parties.
But Mr Merson denied there was a mutual agreement. He said he was told he would be considered for positions with the councils youth services program should any become available.
I was bullied,gay man claims
They were not trained to deal with same-sex- attracted people - Harley Merson

Victorias paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times.
Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012.
To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.
This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes:
a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) this is twice as much as the previous offer
an immediate 6% wage increase
an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 a 12% increase in total.
Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commissions arbitration of their work value claim.
Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive:
10 weeks paid leave annually
10 weeks paid parental leave
6 months long service leave after 15 years service
tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year.
Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service.
These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment.
The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers.
This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives.

Craigieburn kept alive its hopes of staying in division 1 of the Essendon District Football League with a win against Hillside on Saturday.
The Eagles flew out of the blocks at D.S. Aitken Reserve with four goals to one in the first quarter and raced to 49-point lead by half-time.
The Sharks cut the margin in the third quarter, but the Eagles did enough in the last term to win 17.13 (115) to 11.14 (80).
The Eagles are still on the bottom of the ladder but are now only one game behind Oak Park and Hadfield.
Elsewhere, Westmeadows defeated Hadfield by 29 points.
The Tigers kicked five goals to one in the final quarter to extend a five-point three-quarter time lead to the final result of 13.13 (91) to 8.14 (62).
In division 2, Roxburgh Park bounced back from its first loss of the season last week to beat Keilor Park 11.5 (71) to 3.14 (32).
The opening quarter saw the Devils have more scoring shots but wasteful kicking saw them trail by 13 points.
The Magpies stepped up in the second quarter and kept the Devils goalless while kicking 2.1 to lead by 22.
That lead was extended to 40 points at three-quarter time and both kicked only one goal in the last quarter.
Reece Tarczon was best on ground with three goals for Roxburgh Park.
Jacana remains in fifth position on the ladder despite losing 18.10 (118) to 15.9 (99) against Coburg Districts.
The Jaguars were made to pay for a goalless first quarter and couldnt reduce the margin after that. Craigieburns hopes of staying in division 1 are boosted with a win against Hillside. (Wayne Hawkins)
