“Christ Our King” Every weekend, we worship in anticipation of the eternal kingdom of God where Christ reigns as our King. The last week of each liturgical year is highlighted by celebrating the feast of Christ the King. Next week, we will be starting a new liturgical year that highlights the Gospel of Mark. In the first chapter, we read of Jesus proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is at hand. In the Hebrew imagination of the time, this was expected to be some sort of glorious perfection of the Kingdom of David that had existed a thousand years before Jesus. It involved political triumph with its implicit temporal power. To others, the idea of Kingdom carries weight – we cannot all be royalty. We fear oppression and loss of liberty. In our time of broad historical perspective, we recognize monarchy’s history of political abuse. Indeed, the freedom of our Western world is rooted in heroic reaction to human corruption of the power that defines kingship. On this side of God’s kingdom, even governments structured to avoid the abuses of monarchy retain problems between the ruling class and the citizenry. The ever-present differences of political opinion often involve fear or abuse of another’s power. Many claim that political suppression exists in every form of human government. I have often heard political scientists say

that a benevolent dictatorship would be the ideal form of government – but they know that history has a scarcity of benevolent kings, and such is unsustainable on earth where kings change. In heaven, Christ, our benevolent and eternal king, will redeem us all to royalty – not possible on earth but possible for God who wants our communion, not our ranking. The baptized join Christ as priest, prophet, and king. The Kingdom is not about power over others, it is about fulfillment of being. It is not achieved by power on earth, but by our free will pursuit of what is good. In heaven, we have ultimate freedom, freedom from evil. In pursuit of this freedom, we are told to serve each other – the last will be first, the leader of all must be the slave of all. These concepts are not rooted in earthly monarchy, but these reflect the life of Christ our king. Our time on earth is not always easy and we all will suffer. But our king, who shared our human experience of suffering and death, grants us freedom and is patient. He had to keep teaching his disciples, and for the most part, they stayed with him; but he never abandoned them – and our King will not abandon us. If we seek what is good, if we repent, if we forgive, if we love – the kingdom is, indeed, at hand. Christians understand that the Kingdom of God is rooted in our faith; we worship in pursuit of God’s kingdom; for us the Kingdom starts here!

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Office to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. Enjoy your extra time with family and friends this week and remember to thank God for all of your blessings you and your family have received this year!

Will you be traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday? Call 1-800-MASS TIME or go to www.masstimes.org to find a Catholic Church and the times Mass is celebrated.

Confirmation Year 2 reminder – Don’t forget before you leave for your Thanksgiving break we have a parent student sponsor session THIS Sunday at 7:15 p.m.

Remembering our veterans! Thank you to our Wednesday Evening 5th grade class who spent their evening honoring those in the military.

GA has helped make Christmas special for many poor, disadvantaged and/or disabled members of our community. In the last 20 years, parish members have generously donated over 3,750 gifts!

How does the GA Giving Tree work? At this weekend’s Masses, there are two trees in the back of church filled with ornaments. Each ornament has the needs/wants of someone less fortu-nate. Pick an ornament from the tree and purchase a gift(s) for $20-$25, using the list of ideas on the ornament. Then, bring your gift, concealed in a gift bag, to church, with the ornament attached to the bag. Please remember to attach the ornament to the gift bag so we are able to match the gift with the recipient.

When/Where are the gifts returned? Put your gift (s) under the tree in back of church. Please return all gifts no later than SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4th. All gifts will be organized and delivered that week. Your loving generosity is greatly needed and appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Jean at 952-227-4095, [email protected] or Cheryl at 612-366-3953.
