The Peace Prize is one of five prizes that have been awarded annually since1901 under the auspices of the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm for outstanding contributions in thefields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. Starting in 1969, aSveriges Riksbank Prize in tutus for princess Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel has alsobeen awarded.</p><p>Nobel Peace Prize Significance: Whereas the other prizes are awarded by specialist committeesbased in Sweden, the Peace Prize is awarded by a committee appointed by the Norwegian Storting.According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize is to go to whoever "shall have done the most or the bestwork for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for theholding and promotion of peace congresses". The prize includes a medal, a personal diploma, and alarge sum of prize money (currently 10 million Swedish crowns).</p><p>Nobel Peace Prize Significance: The Nobel Peace Prize has been called "the world's most prestigiousprize". With the award to Al Gore and the IPCC in 2007, a total of 95 individuals and 23organizations have been awarded the Peace Prize. The Prize is awarded at a ceremony in the OsloCity Hall on December 10, the date on which Alfred Nobel died.</p><p>Nobel Peace Prize Significance: 1) The peace movement (leaders of the International Peace Bureauand the International Arbitration League); (2) Humanitarian work (Albert Schweitzer, MotherTeresa, the Red Cross, the UNHCR); (3) International Organisations (UN agencies such as the ILO);(4)Disarmament (Alva Myrdal and Alfonso Garcia Robles, Joseph Rotblat and the PugwashConferences); (5) Statesmen (The largest group, including: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson,Willy Brandt, Henry Kissinger, Anwar Sadat and Menachim Begin , Mikhail Gorbachev, NelsonMandela and Willem de Klerk, John Hume and David Trimble); (6)Human Rights (Desmond Tutu,Martin Luther King, Andrei Sakharov, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, the Dalai Lama).</p><p>Nobel Peace Prize Significance: During the war the Nobel Peace prize was not given. Actually theyears 1939-1943 there was no recipient. The year 1944 saw the International Committee of the RedCross accept the prize. In the year preceding the war 1938 the prize went to Nansen InternationalOffice for Refugees, an organization authorized by the League of Nations in 1930.</p><p>Nobel Peace Prize Significance: Extract from Alfred Nobel's Will:</p><p>"The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way:</p><p>The capital shall be invested by my executors in safe securities and shall constitute a fund, theinterest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during thepreceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. The said interest shall bedivided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to the person who shall</p></li><li><p>have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics; one part to theperson who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to theperson who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology ormedicine; one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the mostoutstanding work of an idealistic tendency; and one part to the person who shall have done the mostor the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies andfor the holding and promotion of peace congresses.</p><p>The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that forphysiological or medical works by Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm; that for literature by theAcademy in Stockholm; and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be electedby the Norwegian Storting.
