NHPTV Connections April 2015
The War That Changed A GenerationApril 30, 1975 marked the end of
the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. This month, the 40th anniversary, NHPTV has scheduled a number of programs to tell the stories of those who served in the conflict as well as how civilians were affected by the war.
The Draft offers an in-depth look at the ways the military draft,
throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s, shot a lightning rod and lit up every schism of American race, class and culture.
American Experience: My Lai surveys the 1968 My Lai massacre, its subsequent cover-up and the efforts of the soldiers who broke rank to halt the atrocities.
Then revisit May 1970 in The Days the ‘60s Died, which explores when four students were fatally shot during the protests at Kent State University. The following mayhem has been called the most divisive moment in American history since the Civil War.
During the war, The Dick Cavett Show devoted entire shows to generals, POWs, journalists and leaders of the ‘60s anti-war movement. On Dick Cavett’s Vietnam, revisit the pivitol interviews from the show’s archive alongside footage of the time to create a varied and unique perspective on the Vietnam War and its aftermath.
Finally, explore the chaotic final moments of the war in the award-winning American Experience: Last Days in Vietnam. With the clock ticking and Saigon under fire, a communist victory was inevitable. As the U.S. prepared to withdraw, many soldiers on the ground worried that their South Vietnamese allies and friends faced imprisonment or
death at the hands of the approaching North Vietnamese. Follow the brave Americans that took matters into their own hands and tried to save as many South Vietnamese as possible.American Experience: My Lai • April 21 at 9 PM • NHPTV PRIMEThe Draft • April 27 at 9 PM Dick Cavett’s Vietnam • April 27 at 10 PM The Day the ‘60s Died • April 28 at 8 PM American Experience: Last Days in Vietnam • April 28 at 9 PM
