CHRISTMAS SEASON – DECEMBER 2019
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. I’m sure that
you are as bewildered by the fact that we are already into
December, as I am. It’s either that or been blown away by all
the wind we have been experiencing!
Now that silly season is upon us, I hope that everyone is feeling
the Christmas spirit, but if not, then get along to one of your
league Christmas parties. It will be a busy week for some of our
members as there are a number on next week. Enjoy!

Congratulations to Aryav Bhawan!
Ary competed in the Tennis NZ Junior Masters over
Labour Weekend. He played
u12s in the 9-16 group & came second. Meaning he
placed as number 10 in the country.
Ary then competed in u12s
nationals at the end of
November. Well done Ary!
Time for a Christmas Joke…
RON IS RETIRING.
It is with great regret that our grounds man is hanging up his tools.
Ron and Fay are our wonderful neighbours at the club and have had a long association with us, especially Fay who was a regular
player along with her children; Owen who was junior champion for 2 years running.
Ron was a Post Office manager until he retired 10 years ago and kindly offered to maintain our extensive grounds. Ron has taken
care of the lawn mowing, weeding, clipping, planting, spraying and collecting people’s rubbish. We haven’t paid Ron a
Elf: I’m so strong I could lift a reindeer with one
hand.
Santa: Great, but where are we going to find a
one-handed reindeer?
cent, he has only been reimbursed for petrol and weed spray etc.
Ron does get a bit of liquid product from the club but it’s a very small price for his massive effort.
My association with Ron over those 10 years has been very
rewarding for me and I have formed a very strong relationship
with him. We talk often and Ron would pop over when I was at the club and would bring me up to date with various issues
concerning the club like a broken lawn mower, various noxious weeds, who stripped the Olive tree and unsavoury characters
parking up in our car park! I also enjoyed a social side with Ron and Faye and have spent many a time having a tipple on their
deck discussing world events, politics and life today!! This side
will continue I’m sure!
On behalf of the club, a huge thanks, Ron, for all your hard work. We’ve been so lucky to have had you, your efforts will be sorely
missed.
Merry Christmas to you and Fay, I’ll catch you soon on the deck!
Best wishes Graeme
(Ed. Many thanks to Graeme Josephson who penned this thank you to Ron on behalf of the club)

2019/20 Membership Fees – Renewing Members
The club fees have remained unchanged since 2017/18.
** Any full year subscription payment made after 31 December
2019 will incur a $30 late payment fee. This is to encourage
prompt payment and to cover any cost of administration in
collecting overdue fees.
2019/20 Membership Fees – New Members
For new memberships dating from 1 January 2020, the following
fees will apply.
LOVE TENNIS WEEKEND: SAT/SUN 7TH/8TH SEPT 2019
The Love Tennis weekend was held on Saturday 7th - Sunday 8th
September with 50/50 weather but still up to 150 new players playing games in our organised events.
The club gained 11 new senior members, and 11 junior members during the event and we believe this raised the profile of LHTC for
the 2019/20 year. Up to six other Lower Hutt clubs participated in the event and based on informal feedback from new members,
'LHTC still provides the best venue and opportunities for social or
competitive tennis as the biggest club in Lower Hutt'.
Thanks to all the volunteers, in particular head coach Michael McGlinchey and his crew including Simon and Alexander, plus
Steph Fuller, Jackie Clarke, Mark Cullen, James Lord, Trevor Dine, Duncan Hutchinson, Grant Yarrall, Julie Scott and all the parents
and other club members who contributed on the day.

The Sunday introduction clinics with Michael McGlinchey are very popular, with over 60 kids attending the two sessions. One of the

WOMEN’S WEEKEND INTERCLUB
Women’s Pre-Xmas Interclub
Great results by both women’s teams in the pre-Xmas round of
interclub.
Premier 1 team finished 5th – Amelia Harris, Rachel Baxter,
Rebecca Clarke, Emily Dine, Rebecca Harkerss, Hanna Baxter (reserve)
Premier 2 team finished 3rd – Julie Scott, Emma McEwan, Sophia
Cave, Amelia Cave, Ella Watson, Hanna Baxter (reserve)
Congratulations to both teams.
Julie Scott – Women’s Interclub
MEN’S WEEKEND INTERCLUB
Our Premier 3 has had a great pre-xmas competition, convincingly
winning the grade. Great effort guys. It is unfortunate that the
pre-xmas competition does not lead to promotion, therefore they
remain in Premier 3 for the post-xmas competition.
With one round still to play, the Lower Hutt teams are coming 3rd
and 8th in the Men’s Division 1 competition. In Division 2 the
competition is extremely close. Our team is tied with 2 other
teams for 1st place.
Good luck to all the teams for the final round.

MIDWEEK - TUE
The midweek club meets on Tuesday mornings from 9.30 for
casual games of doubles. All are welcome to join us, no matter
what level. The group will restart next year following the
anniversary weekend.
We run social events every so often, and congratulations goes to
Shirley for making the winning dumplings at the Masterchef
morning. The Melbourne Cup day is always popular and saw a
variety of hair accessories on the catwalk! Congratulations go to
Zelma, Lynne, and Judy P who were the lucky punters on the day.
The Best Hat winners were Jeanette, Steph and Judy.
The annual Christmas ham and bubbly lunch is on 10th December.
Tennis starts at 9.30am and lunch will follow from 11am. Please
let Jackie know if you are coming.
Jackie Clarke – Midweek Convenor
On Wednesday mornings, there is a ladies interclub team playing
in Hutt Valley B Grade. It has been a fairly windy pre-Christmas
season and some of the games were very close, we won on
countback. The team of Barb van Baarle, Jackie Clarke, Steph
Fuller and Tina Hudson (reserve – Julia Stephens) has finished
the season off in first place.

MONDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
On Monday nights we operate a mix of some singles matches and
mostly doubles. You don't have to be available for singles either -
you can play all doubles if you want. Send me a message if you
are keen and get on the Monday Night League list, even if you
only want to play occasionally.
The plan is to have a Christmas tennis night for us on the evening
of Monday 16th of December. I will organise some food but you
will need to bring your own drink. We will have two rounds of
tennis then we'll have the Christmas party. Starting time is the
normal starting time of 7:30pm. If the weather is bad for tennis -
we will start the Christmas party early. Please RSVP me by Sunday
noon so I get an idea of the numbers.
The draw system will be working for the 9-Dec-19, 16-Dec-19
(Christmas party night) and then it will start up again on Monday
27-Jan-20.

TUESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
Tuesday night singles usually has two to four matches each week,
playing the best of three sets. There's a mix of ability and it's
always a great runaround.
Current leaders are:
1. James Lord
2. Harry Josephson
3. Stephen Macris
We'll finish up on the 17th of December and be back on the 7th
of January.
James Murphy - Tuesday Night League Organiser
WEDNESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
Seasons greetings to all Lower Hutt
tennis club members.
Wednesday Night League is
humming along nicely, with the
warmer and lighter nights upon us.
During the last few months we have
welcomed a number of new
members with an array of tennis
ability, giving all players challenging
tennis.
We end this year’s WNL with ham and trimmings, BYO and a plate
on Wed 11th Dec 6.30pm, as well as having a wee tourny.
The league officially resumes Jan 29th …. Although, the usual
email will be sent out during January if you would like to play.
Feel free to join us, just email [email protected] to be added
to the invite list.
Cheers and have a jolly one.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON TENNIS
The Saturday League has been running
consistently over the winter months, with some nice crisp dry days. A big thank you to
Zelma and Yeap for running the League while
we were away.
The league still runs from 1pm till 3pm over 4 courts in a mixed doubles format. We’ve welcomed some new
players to our group which makes for a high standard of play,
which is well received.
Overall everyone seems to be enjoying the casual organising of the games and the catch up on the deck afterwards so this will
continue into 2020.
We wish everyone an enjoyable Christmas break and Saturday
League will restart on 1 February 2020.
Tinie and Simon Jellie - Saturday League Organisers
SUNDAY MORNING MEET-UP
The Sunday Morning meet-up is a new group for adult beginners and has been running since October when our club coach,
Michael, began running his Tennis Xpress Adult Beginner courses.
The meet-up provides an opportunity for those new to tennis to hone their skills and learn game play in preparation for joining our
senior leagues in a friendly, relaxed environment. It runs from 9:15 – 10:30am, to coincide with the Sunday Junior Introduction
clinic – so come and join us instead of watching your kids in the
clinic, or tell your family and friends that might want to give tennis a go to come along (racquets available to borrow).
We have a great group of enthusiastic players who have been
coming along, and it’s great to see how much their tennis has improved since October. The format is a tennis warm-up, short
drills and then we get into playing short double games. We have
adopted a casual turn-up and play approach, there’s no commitment to attending each week – but the more you play, the
more you improve!
We will have a Christmas morning tea on Sunday 15th after a
shorter playing session (probably finish playing around 10am and then head into the clubhouse for morning tea).
If you would like to come along and have a go just turn up on the
day. If you want further information then send me an email.
Steph Fuller - Sunday Meet-Up Organiser

let Graeme know. If we don’t know about something, we can’t
fix it!

FIRST AID
First aid supplies can be found in the kitchen cupboard as well as
an icepack in the freezer for any minor injuries.
FACILITIES
Please remember that if you are socialising after your game of
tennis it is your responsibility to clean up after yourself e.g.
bottles in the recycling bin, glasses brought inside and placed in
the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is full please empty it if it is
full of clean dishes, turn it on to wash if dirty and then wash your
own dishes.
If you are using the BBQ or heater please remember to turn off
the gas bottle.
When you are playing at the club you need to leave the
clubhouse and the grounds tidy.
A reminder that we are not allowed to use the lights on Sunday
nights due to the resource consent.
