In the last few issues, I have recommended some YouTube tutorials. A new one this month, that I like a lot is Simon Booth at https://www.youtube.com/user/jellybelly2009/featured. He is a pragmatic Lancastrian who does mainly British landscapes, and who shows you how he makes his excellent images. A month or two ago, I managed to damage my faithful Vanguard tripod. It gave up the ghost eventually and became a bipod. A landscape enthusiast without a decent tripod is severely handicapped in my opinion. I did a lot of Googling and was very discouraged by the price of the familiar brands endorsed by the big names (Manfrotto, Benro, Really Right Stuff, Three Legged Thing, Gitzo, etc). At last I found one called the Beike Q999H. It is aluminium, not carbon fibre, but the price was much lighter than many others. I found it was available on AliExpress freight free for NZD$127. I found it was available from a New Zealand retailer for a mere $299. As much as I would like to support the locals guess where I went. It is a very adequate and versatile tripod for a very modest price. I found an unsophisticated on-line review which gives a good overview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bd-XlY0ne0 Elsewhere in this issue will be a request for candidate images for the annual Hutt/Karori Battle. I hope everyone is appropriately proud of our annual exhibition which ends this week. Thanks to everyone who submitted images and especial thanks to Iris Kauffeld and Chris Parkin who so ably curated a very fine exhibition. candidate images to Helen ([email protected]) no later than 30 October. No more than two images from each member for each of the four topics:

1. Wellington - my city in ruins. This topic covers the greater Wellington area, so not just confined to the ruins of Wellington Central!

2. Seeds 3. Making music 4. SOOC (One click and you’re done!)

This topic specifies a technique rather than a subject. In this case, it’s SOOC – Straight Out Of Camera. You can set your camera up however you want – whatever white balance, exposure, flash, special effects, whatever… the only stipulation is that you can only press the shutter once and your image must be the resulting jpg. No cropping or further alteration allowed except for downsizing it to the maximum dimensions below. It would be easy to resort to our old friends LR and Ps but the challenge is to take a “great image” under these restrictions. You’re welcome!

Early notice: it’s just a few short weeks away, so I have booked the Speight’s Ale House in Petone (again) for our annual Christmas meal together. There are 30 seats available at $40 per head for a set menu dinner. Drinks extra. Partners welcome. This is not funded in any way by the club. First in first served. If you want to join in, send your requests to me ([email protected]) So ends my penultimate presidential rambling.

Coming up in October and Peeking into November Tuesday 9 October – Jo Moore We have made sure that this month’s guest speaker has remembered the booking. Jo specialises in Weddings and pet photography (see http://jomoorephotographer.co.nz/information-and-pricing-for-pet-photography/).

Tuesday 23 October – Judging for Ladder Round 4 We don’t always agree with our judges but they put a lot of effort into assessing our images and there is much to learn from their opinions. Judging sessions are well worth attending even if you didn’t enter. Entries are due on the 23rd for the Dorothy Comley and the Cliff Perry portfolio competitions. Each of these requires a set of six mounted prints which form a coherent set. Frames and glass are not permitted. The Cliff Perry is for people who have been a member for three years or less, who do not have any PSNZ Honours, are not professionals, have not won it previously and who have not won the beginner grade competition previously. Everybody is eligible to enter the Dorothy Comley competition. See http://huttcameraclub.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Hutt-Camera-Club-Competition-Rules.pdf page 7 for the exact rules.

Tues 30 October - submissions for the Hutt/Karori Battle Send images to [email protected].

Wednesday 13th November – Annual Hutt/Karori Battle This is always a fun night. This year, the Karori is host and they are out for revenge after two consecutive losses. We, on the other hand, want to establish a pattern, so come along to the Karori community centre prepared to yell and cheer in support of our entries. Karori is a very small club, so if you are coming, I know they would appreciate a contribution towards supper by way of a plate of food to share. Car-pooling is encouraged.

Articles Finding my Photography by David Coxon I was very pleased to find that my first attendance at a PSNZ convention, the recent Central Regional held in Whanganui, was an enjoyable and inspiring experience. While I learnt some new tricks about Lightroom, saw some amazing photo essays and found out all about judging and going for PSNZ letters, it was the thinking that I did about my own photography that really added value to the weekend.

I have been involved in photography for about 50 years now, and in the club scene on and off for most of that time. However, it has only been recently that I have moved from a focus of wanting to take good personal memory photos, to asking myself why am I taking photos at all? A presentation at the conference on urban landscapes, by Antonia Sims, made me realise that she had an emotional connection to the gritty urban environment that I don’t have, but that I have a similar connection to the great outdoors. I also realised that I am not very interested in portrait or street photography because I have no real emotional connection to those subjects, especially images of people I don’t know. Conversely, I realised that people who can happily spend all day photographing random strangers on the city streets must have a connection to people in general that I lack.

So where does this leave me in terms of my thoughts of going for my licentiateship? One of the requirements of the portfolio is to show diversity – but am I sufficiently interested to focus on those genres that I have no connection to? Would doing so develop skills that were transferable to my interest in landscape photograph and the great outdoors or would I do better to follow the line of a number of presenters I heard over the weekend, who stated very positively that they worked in a specific genre that was defined by their interests, and that was their niche. In going for my PSNZ letters, would I simply be playing to my weaknesses to meet someone else’s expectations?

At this stage I really don’t know. Luckily there is plenty of time to mull this over and just focus on improving my photography. I think that next year I will make a small step forward by entering the club contests in the Open section and just see what happens. Perhaps that conference will be the catalyst for major growth in my photography.

Blue and Gold and Places in Between by Brian Harmer Over the last few months, I have mentioned a number of people whose work on YouTube I admire as online landscape photography tutorials. One of the things they all seem to have in common is that their recorded shooting sessions are almost always in the blue hour (the hour prior to sunrise or after sunset) or the golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset). It’s pretty rare for any of their images to be made in the middle of the day, and especially not if the sky is clear and blue. Usually, they are downright disparaging of daylight shots.

The fact that they are teaching, famous and making money whereas I am not, speaks volumes. That said, I cannot bring myself to waste all the daylight hours. If, for example, I am driving from Wellington to Auckland, should I stop taking photos after Waikanae and not resume until Pukekohe? I find that I am often in places where I want to make an image at other than the blue or gold hours. Should I refrain from making a picture because the time is wrong? It is simply not practical for me to visit every candidate landscape location at sunrise or sunset. On the other hand, there are many beautiful places stored in my list of places to visit at sunset sometime. Apart from thinking “I must go back there at dawn or dusk”, my other trick is to look for some small part of the whole. I look for something that represents an area without pretending to be the totality. The boat image above was shot at the Hikoikoi reserve at 9:43 am, well past the golden hour. The shot below of the boat sheds in same area was shot from the other side of the river a week later at 9:05 am. The final shot in this article was made at the superb Aston Norwood Gardens in Upper Hutt at 9:45 am on a rather flat grey day. I don’t suppose for a moment that any of these three images will get honours, but they each please me in their own way. I think they were worth making, and either way, I had a lot of fun making them.

7

So, can I make worthwhile landscape images in the middle of the day? I believe I can, whether or not judges agree with me. I concede that they would probably be better images if they were made in the blue or gold hours. On the other hand, I recall working for an electronics company where it was often said “perfect is the enemy of good”. Can I still make a daytime image that gives me pleasure? Yes, of course I can and so can you. You don’t have to leave your expensive equipment idle except at sunrise and sunset.
