End of Year Party Celebration We were so happy to enjoy another fun end of year party with all our learners, tutors, volunteers and staff. It is great for us to come together to celebrate all the successes and achievements of the year and to be entertained by cultural performances from our learner communities. The support of Mayor Ray Wallace, Deputy Mayor David Bassett and councillor Margaret Willard in attending and participating in this event is much appreciated by us. The Mayor spoke to us about the importance of appreciating difference and diversity in our community but also the importance of staying true to our cultural identity. We also acknowledged an historic moment in farewelling present and past committee members as we leave our incorporated society status behind and move into a new era of being part of English Language Partners NZ Trust. Sessions

We plan to resume these sessions from

Friday 27th February.

They take place in our meeting room (next

to the office), 9.30am to 10.30am usually

on the last Friday of each month. The

sessions are informal and interactive and

offer practical advice and ideas for home

tutors.

Tutor Workshop—journeys to New

Zealand and beyond...... At the tutor workshop we held in November we invited some

of our learners to speak about their countries of origin and how

they came to NZ. We heard very interesting stories of why and

how people had come here and

what they had been doing since

arriving. The session was so

interactive, that some audience

members joined in and shared

their stories as well!

Gerson from Colombia

Marina from Serbia Nanubhai from India

Susy from England Doudou (Sophie) from China

Tial Bik from Myanmar Vladimir from Russia Ikram from Somalia

Congratulations to Julius Gazo for

completing his ESOL Certificate in

Home Tutoring and winning the

Christmas hamper!

Farewell to Noel Chadwick

We recently farewelled our accounts clerk Noel who worked in

the office every Wednesday. Noel has been with ELP Hutt

since 2002 and has ably overseen our finances throughout this

time however as part of the Centre’s amalgamation to English

Language Partners NZ Trust, our accounting and payroll

functions were centralised.

We wish Noel all the best for the future and thank him for all

the great work he has done for ELP Hutt.

...and to Vera Xu

Vera was an English Language

Group tutor for our Chinese

Beginners class for several years

and more recently the coordinator of

our Certificate in English Language

course. We had also worked with

Vera for many years in her role as a

Settlement Support Coordinator.

Vera has moved to a position with

NZQA and we thank her for her

hard work and contribution to ELP

Hutt.

Central Literacy Group's Walk to Avalon Park As part of an exercise on giving directions we went on a guided walk of the area surrounding our new classroom at the River of Life Centre. We turned right into Lincoln Avenue and then right again into Dyer Street. We walked straight down the street until we got to Dyer Street school where we saw playing fields, a playground, the netball and tennis courts, the classrooms and a kindergarten. We went back down Dyer Street, turned left at Lincoln and right into High Street. We saw some big houses and a small house selling for $480,000! We saw 5 fast food shops, 4 superettes (dairies), a computer

shop, a barber, a flower shop, a butcher, a baker, a paint shop, an ATM and a post shop. There were three churches—Catholic, Assemblies of God, Seventh Day Adventist and a meditation centre for our spiritual welfare. To keep us healthy we spotted the podiatry Clinic for our feet, the medical centre and pharmacy and a physiotherapy clinic for our stiff muscles and joints. For our cars we found the Z service station and a car repair shop.

We crossed High Street at the pedestrian crossing, turned left into Fairway Drive and walked to Avalon Park which was on our right. We rested at the picnic tables beside the barbecues and counted 85 ducks on the pond—some were asleep. We went over the bridge to the swings and slides and climbing bars. NgaiNgai and Thang had a go on the flying fox. Mary was not quite brave enough to go down the big slide.

What a lot of things there are to do in Avalon!

OUR TREASURES – by the Moera Tuesday English Language Group

We read a story called “Treasures” and wrote about our own special things.

My treasure is a pair of earrings. My friend who lives in Japan gave them to me before I came to NZ. They were made

by her. Making jewellery was our hobby and we often met to make these accessories together. She chose the blue beads

when she made them because it is my favourite colour. I sometimes wear them when I go out. By Mayu Sugita

My treasure is a monk locket and gold necklace. The monk is a favourite in my city Nong Khai. My mother gave it to

me for my 15th birthday. She went to work in Japan and after that she bought my locket. She wanted to give me good

luck. By Kanittha Promsakhan

My treasure is a pair of earrings. They are made from real diamond. My husband gave them to me when I married him. I

always wear them and remember him. It reminds me about when I married and I want to pass them to my daughters.

By Rangrak (Aoo)

My scarf and gloves are my treasure. They are woven by my mother for me ten years ago. They are made from thick

wool thread to keep me warm in winter. She spent her time to make something special for me. I really like them because

when I wear them I remember my mother and feel how she used to love and care for me. By Suha Abu Saad

My treasure is a monk locket and gold necklace. It has two Buddha lockets and two Hindu lockets on a gold necklace.

My father gave me two Buddha lockets and two Hindu lockets for luck and to protect me and my family. When I am

old, I will give it to my son. By Thanadol Poungsang

My treasure is a Thai costume. It is a beautiful pink Thai costume made from silk. My friend gave it to me six years ago. When I wear

it, I remember her. By Phanon

My treasure is a 1 carat diamond ring. It is a high quality ring. My husband gave it to me for my 7th wedding anniversary. It reminds

me of very special good times. By Sarah Kang

My treasure is a special Enrico Caruso music CD. It is a rare compact disc and hard to find. When I travelled Europe I searched the

music stores for classical CDs. I found it in a music store in Belgium. Caruso was a famous tenor who lived over 100 years ago. He was the first tenor in Italy. By John Kang

Resource Update

The start of the new year can be a good time to think about how your tutoring is going and whether

you need to freshen things up a bit. Often it just takes a small addition –(introducing a new game/an

old favourite/ an activity) or using a different teaching strategy, (letting your learner select or lead

the activity/ introducing a sense of competition/ a checklist) to give your sessions a new energy.

New activities can be a little threatening so don’t be put off if there is not a great reaction the first

time you introduce it.

Check out the new resources listed and the many more we have in the resource room.
