Crowning Glory

With the recently concluded Olympics at Beijing, the world is wrapped in awe of the splendor, grandeur

and magnificence with which the biggest sporting event in the world was conducted.

All eyes are now shifting to India in anticipation of the Commonwealth Games to be held in 2010.

And we at Era are proud to be an intrinsic part of India's moment of glory.

Our Construction & Contracts Division has been awarded the prestigious project of upgrading,

project has been awarded to us by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

The scope of work includes civil works, dismantling, internal electrical installations, lifts and escalators,

This is our second project for the Commonwealth Games and an extremely important and prestigious

On joining the Era Group of Companies, one of the most crucial mandates given to me was to take the 'Era' brand to the next level.

A challenging and exciting assignment - one, which had me devouring books on brand leadership in no time.

While doing so, I came across an excellent article on 'building a leadership brand' – an article which I would love to share with all my colleagues at Era and which is a must read for anyone interested in the subject of branding.

Authored by Dave Ulrich and Norm Smallwood for the Harvard Business Review, they start by drawing on the common aspects / elements shared by great global brands.

General Electric, whose motto is “imagination at work”, is a diversified company with a $163 bn in annual revenue. It is famous for developing leaders who are dedicated to turning imaginative ideas into leading products and services.

Johnson & Johnson, whose credo begins, “We believe our first responsibility is to the doctors, nurses and patients, to mothers and fathers and all others who use our products and services,” earned $ 53 bn in revenue last year.

It is celebrated for developing leaders who provide scientifically sound, high-quality products and services that help, heal and cure disease and improve the quality of life.

“Good help to those in need” is the mission of Bon Secours health System, a nonprofit health care firm based in Marriottsville, Maryland, that operates a variety of hospitals and nursing care facilities.

That means Bon Secours expects its managers to do more than just run health care units. They must also balance the business of health care with compassion and caring.

One obvious connect ion among these firms – and others such as PepsiCo, Goldman Sachs, Disney, Boeing, and Herman Miller – is that they

turn out strong leaders, in some cases becoming “leader feeder” firms, whose managers are well equipped to run other organizations.

Evolution of cinema viewingAt the fag end of the 19th century, the Lumiere brothers held the first public screening of a film in the darkened basement of a Paris café. Their invention, the cinematograph was a camera, a projector and a printer all rolled into one. However, Louis Lumiere's expectation was that “cinema is an invention without a future”.

The first ever feature film made in India was the silent black and white epic of 'Raja Harishchandra', a popular and legendary figure who is still considered as an icon of truthfulness. The film was made by Dadasaheb Phalke, the man who is credited as being the, Father of Indian Cinema.

The first talkie was made in 1931, when sound swept through the new & inexperienced movie industry. 'Alam Ara' was the first of the Indian talkies. Today, here we are in the 21st century defying Louis Lumiere's expectation of “cinema - an invention without a future”, with the cinema representing the most potent art.

We at Era E-Zone with our unique brand of “Era Cinemas Star Box Office”, are all set to redefine the concept of cinema viewing, giving it a whole new dimension under the promise of “Era Cinema Experience”.

Present business scenario and fundamentals…A talkSince the last four to five months we have seen weakening of markets and low

industrial growth. We have also seen weakening of the US economy along with

a one time high of global crude oil prices.

US stock markets along with Indian stock markets have seen huge corrections.

In fact Indian stock markets have been corrected to the extent of 30 - 35%.

All the facts stated above are well known to us and I am mentioning these just to

highlight that the above factors may adversely hit any economic growth and put brakes to industrial

growth.

But if the fundamentals of a company are strong and are based on robust rules, policies and procedures,

the impact will be much lower as compared to the actual impact.

Corporates, which follow strong systems, well laid down policies and take decisions based on present

economic and business scenario will survive long and will ensure that shareholders' value will not be

affected in long run.

Era Group has got a unique business environment by virtue of having a prudent mix of construction,

infrastructure, real estate, pre engineering building systems, hospitality and entertainment businesses with

expansion plans and diversification plans into the power sector.

This gives Era a strong platform for multifaceted growth options, keeping in view the fact that the future

belongs to infrastructure and power sector growth.

The responsibility of capitalizing the growth option available remains with the management of the

company which can sense the market and take timely and appropriate decisions.

Our Era Group is one such Group, which with its diverse business activities is poised for steep growth in

the coming years.

To take the group to greater heights, we need to have strong corporate governance, adherence to

corporate rules and policies, focused business plans for every division, implementation strategies for the

business plan and a strong desire to accomplish the plans.

Diversification options and investment decisions need to be taken based on our expertise and also based on futuristic business growth scenario.

Growth of any company depends on profitability, growth in turnover and strong cash flows.

While each and every employee of the company must see himself/herself as an entrepreneur and they should also think for the growth of the company in any of above three points as if they themselves are the owners of the company.

This will lead to full involvement of employees within the day-to-day business of the company with smart thinking of strong cash flows generations and profit maximizations.

Our E-Zone business comprising running of multiplexes and food court is also doing good with firm expansion plans in the pipeline with the aim of taking the business on a national level.

We are also looking for some business partners and JV's so that the branding is also done for the business for a rich valuation of business.

Our construction division has a very strong order book and is poised for excellent growth; our EPC division is executing big highway projects and other sector projects; aggressive plans have been chalked out for the RMC and EMD divisions; we have already signed an MOU for a power plant of 1200 MW; Buildsys is soon expanding its capacity with a plant at Nagpur and E-Zone is drawing out blockbuster plans...what else do we need, we need a strong and dedicated/motivated team to deliver and take the Company to the heights, where we all feel proud that yes we have done this and are a part of the Era Family.

My best wishes to all for achieving the plans with fully dedicated efforts.

Safety firstFire awareness and safety should be an everyday practice. Each employee should go through his/her work area, cleaning out any accumulation of old papers and boxes paying attention to the storage of flammable; eliminating unnecessary items like extension cords; watching for overloaded circuits and using care when smoking (smoking however is nowhere permitted inside the premises).“Employees should know the location of fire extinguishers and hoses in their general area. Most importantly, employees should know the location of fire exits”

In case of an evacuation - employees should never panic and perform the following:

1. Secure sensitive material.

2. Doors and windows should be closed, but unlocked.

3. All electrical items should be unplugged.

4. Visitors should be directed/escorted to the nearest exit.

5. Assemble outside the main gate and ensure nobody is left (check toilets also).

6. Count number of personnel with the daily attendance register kept with security.

7. The security manager or the building administrator will notify everyone where they should gather and notify all personnel when it is safe to re-enter the building.

8. Do not re-enter buildings until it has been determined that it is safe.

9. In case of a major fire, fire brigade will be called by the management/security/facility. In such a case, wait for the chief fire warden announcement before reentering into the building/premises.

Safety always,

Let the spirit fly highIndia is a nation with a very rich historic background. The Independence Day, India (Swatantrata Divas) is celebrated on the 15th August to commemorate its independence from the 150 years British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on that day in 1947.

Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs take place across the country. And we at Era are no different.

This day was celebrated with full enthusiasm in all our offices a day in advance.

The results were declared at 5:00 pm during the award giving ceremony.

Celebrations at Era Building Systems
