GENEALOGY/FAMILY HISTORY HELPERS AVAILABLE AT PETONE LIBRARY 10am -‐12pm
On duty for November: • Wednesday 20 Nov – Deb Beban & Lynly Yates • December: -‐ No Duties For those new to genealogy and/or who want help knocking down those brick walls, this is an excellent time and place to have our experts help you. Our helpers can show you what is available in the library and how to go about finding what you are looking for.
WANTED –MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY Our membership secretary would really like someone to assist with, and eventually take over this aspect of Branch activity. The busiest time for this role is around the membership renewal period (February to May). However some work is involved throughout the year as new members join or members’ details change. The membership secretary also emails the monthly newsletter and other communications to members. The main prerequisite for the job is that you are well organised, can maintain a simple excel spreadsheet and email lists, and don’t mind spending a bit of time making the membership/library cards, name tags etc. Making new members feel welcome is also a key aspect of the role. There will be plenty of training and support, with as much time as you need before final handover. This is a great opportunity to become more involved in the Branch and support your local genealogy community. You don’t need to be a member of the Committee or attend meetings, but if you would like to do that as well you would be very welcome. If you are interested or would like to find out more, please contact Anita West.

21 November am: Visit to the Home of Compassion, Island Bay Instead of holding the usual morning meeting several members enjoyed a visit to the Home of Compassion at Island Bay. Sister Josephine explained the various displays depicting the life of Suzanne Aubert in France, her journey to New Zealand on a whaling ship and her work in Auckland , Hawkes Bay, Jerusalem ( Whanganui River) and Wellington. We were able to view the displays at our own pace after which we were treated to morning tea. Sister Josephine also explained the archival material that was available for research and we were able to see the bottles of medicine made up by Suzanne Aubert from “secret’ ingredients and native plants know for their healing qualities. We then visited the chapel and finally the garden, which features in the film ‘Gardening with Soul’. There is a gravestone in the grounds in memory of Suzanne Aubert and a grotto that has been built into the hill A donation was given to the home from the branch. Written and photographed by Diane Stinson.
