THIS MONTH'S EVENTS: 14 November Evening Meeting: Sherayl McNabb – New Zealand Military Nursing
Sherayl McNabb is an historian who specialises in the history of New Zealand Nursing in the military. In 1990 Sherayl was a co author in the book "A history of the Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps Boer War to Present Day". This book is now in the process of being re-‐written.
Sherayl will talk about the history of the nursing movement in the New Zealand Military and that there were military nurses from WW1 onwards. She will also talk about the research she did and is currently doing, where she researched and how she put this research together. Working from the basic name and building on that. This research has often bought out inconsistencies of information between the different resources and will provide an insight as to where to go for information.

A gold coin donation towards the cost of petrol would be appreciated. Tea and Biscuits will be provided at the Home of Compassion Contact: Diane closer to the date, if unable to come.

Brad Patterson Unpacking the Kists: The Scots in New Zealand.
Brad Patterson was formerly director of the Irish – Scottish Studies Program at the Victoria University of Wellington. Tom Brooking is Professor of History at the University of Otago. Jin McAloon is Associate Professor of History at the Victoria University of Wellington This book is scheduled for publication in November 2013.
Historians have suggested that Scottish influences are more pervasive in New Zealand than in any other country outside Scotland, yet curiously New Zealand's Scots migrants have previously attracted only limited attention. A thorough and interdisciplinary work, ‘Unpacking the Kists’ is the first in-‐depth study of New Zealand's Scots migrants and their impact on an evolving settler society. The authors establish the dimensions of Scottish migration to New Zealand, the principal source areas, the migrants' demographic characteristics, and where they settled in the new land. Drawing from extended case-‐studies, they examine how migrants adapted to their new environment and the extent of longevity in diverse areas including the economy, religion, politics, education, and folkways. They also look at the private worlds of family, neighbourhood, community, customs of everyday life and leisure pursuits, and expressions of both high and low forms of transplanted culture. Adding to international scholarship on migrations and cultural adaptations, ‘Unpacking the Kists’ demonstrates the historic contributions Scots made to New Zealand culture by retaining their ethnic connections and at the same time interacting with other ethnic groups

Can You Identify this Photograph
The photographer F G Barker, 71 Courtney Place, Wellington The man beside the trailer could be my late Father in Law Ben Philpott. He lived in Wellington and could have been working at this timber yard in the late 1930’s. Any ideas appreciated. Contact Helene Philpott [email protected] Maybe other members can help you identify that old photo. I’m happy to put one photograph in the newsletter each month for you, space permitting. Request for Information: Has anyone had personal dealings/results with genealogical DNA? Any suggestions or personal recommendations, as I would love to try it. Many Thanks. Yvonne Airey

The gravestones at St Mary's Cathedral are an important memorial to New Plymouth's history. However, some of the headstones are in a poor condition and (branch member) John Pickering is organizing restoration efforts. John is also seeking information on the people buried at St Mary's. If one of your ancestors is buried there, or you have some information, Please get in touch with John at [email protected] or (06) 758 4952. The restoration also needs funds, so all donations are gratefully received New Plymouth Branch Newsletter Christchurch Photo Hunt Once again this year, Christchurch City Libraries would like you to lend them photos connected with the heritage of the city so that can digitally scan them and display them in ‘Kete Christchurch’. The busiest time for this role is around the membership renewal period (February to May). However some work is involved throughout the year as new members join or members’ details change. The membership secretary also emails the monthly newsletter and other communications to members. The main prerequisite for the job is that you are well organised, can maintain a simple excel spreadsheet and email lists, and don’t mind spending a bit of time making the membership/library cards, name tags etc. There will be plenty of training and support, with as much time as you need before final handover. This is a great opportunity to become more involved in the Branch and support your local genealogy community. You don’t need to be a member of the Committee or attend meetings, but if you would like to do that as well you would be very welcome. If you are interested or would like to find out more, please contact Anita West
