Generous LionsThis year again, the Lions Club of Newman donated $5,000 to Telethon from their fundraising efforts around town. They will be donating a further $5,000 to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. “We feel that both these causes are very worthy as they service this town,” wrote Club President Anthony Middleton on Facebook. As the Lions Club is a volunteer organisation, they are always looking for new members to assist with their projects. Anthony also wrote that “one person equals 2 hands that will help out our current members who work tirelessly in the community to be able to help our services in this town and those that service us directly.”

Annual Bulk Verge CollectionThe Shire of East Pilbara will be holding the annual bulk verge collection on the week commencing 9 November. All household bulk rubbish and green waste that is neatly stacked on the verge for collection prior to this date will be picked up. There are restrictions as to what can be collected and the size and placement of the rubbish. Details can be found at http://www.eastpilbara.wa.gov.au/Shire-Services/Waste-management-services/Rubbish-disposal-and-tipAs mentioned in the previous edition of Newman News, twice weekly rubbish collection with the green lids began in October and will continue until the end of April.

Car Colour CrashesAccording to RAC, a recent study was undertaken into whether the colour of your car influences the risk of a crash. Black, blue, grey, green and silver were found to be more likely to be involved in a crash. The comparative risk was greater during daylight hours. The risk was up to 10% greater than that of white cars, with yellow coming in second. Perhaps supporting the call for using headlights even during the day. However, neither study could confirm if the crashes were related to the behaviour of the drivers who chose a particular colour or solely the colour itself.

Pink Ribbon EventOn 19 October Newman House was transformed into a sea of pink to host the annual Pink Ribbon morning tea for breast cancer research, with some 50 to 60 people attending. The event was organised by Georgie McInerney, with Naomi Ahmedi and Lynne Craigie being instrumental in making the morning a success. The morning raised $1,855 for the cause through donations and raffles. Georgie would like to thank the community who were so very much involved; with donations of prizes received from businesses and individuals, help setting up, baking for the event, helping the event run, and the big clear up afterwards. Well done to all who participated showing how generous our community is.

NAIDOC SoftballBy Nicole Willis

On Sunday 18 October, Newman hosted its first NAIDOC Softball Carnival proudly supported by Fortescue Metals Group. While NAIDOC week is celebrated in July, the carnival was delayed due to the availability of many of the Indigenous teams out at country for the Western Desert Carnival.

Five teams attended the 7-aside round robin game, starting at 2 pm and finishing with the grand final at 6 pm.

It was a very competitive afternoon of softball with the ladies giving it their all and it came down to the last two games determining the teams for the grand final, with Rangers winning three games, Hawks 2 winning three and drawing one and the Dream Team just missed out by winning two.

The grand final was a real nail biter with it being won by just one run, with Hawks 2 taking the victory.

Overall winners for the day were:• Winner: Hawks 2• Runner up: Rangers• Best on Ground in the Grand Final: Jackie

Bickendorf• Rising Star in the Grand Final: Gavina• Best on Ground Overall: Kelli Jones • Rising Star Overall: Renee Clifton

Special thanks to Jen Cumbers from the East Pilbara Softball Association and Jackie Bickendorf for assisting in the organisation of the event. To the umpires on the day Tina Wilson, Jen Cumbers and Michael Kendrick and to all the teams that fielded a side on the day it would not be made possible without you all. Here’s to 2016 being bigger and better.

Reflections TourBy Sonya Matheson

The 2015 Reflection Tour in Newman was held on Sunday 27 September at the Newman Golf Club with free entry courtesy of the Shire of East Pilbara. First up was Newman’s songstress Desiré Burger. The band followed with their unusual mix of didgeridoo, guitar, harmonica, percussion, flute, violin and cello creating an unique sound with original songs and a few interpretations of covers. Delicious food was made available by the Newman Golf Club Whole Foods Cafe.

Teddy Bears’ PicnicIf you went down to the woods (a.k.a. NNC) on 20 October, there sure was a big surprise, for every child that ever there was (well lots anyway) had gather there for certain because that was the day the teddy bears had their picnic.

The Newman Neighbourhood Centre held a Teddy Bears’ Picnic during their ‘Time Out’. Parents were included in the morning tea on the front grassed area of the centre for the first hour and a half, then the children moved into the designated crèche area where they did craft and colouring in.

The special morning tea included teddy bear sandwiches, jelly, teddy biscuits and fruit. The children brought along their favourite teddy and were encouraged to participate in games, dancing and singing all about teddy bears.

It was really great to see the children enjoying the morning and they all looked delightfully exhausted upon leaving. Each child received a laminated Teddy Certificate highlighting something unique about their Teddy.

NNC is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Monday to Thursday they offer a crèche service available for three hours while parents can participate in study, craft or timeout, this is at a small cost $3 per adult, $5 for first child and $3 each additional child in creche.

NNC also offers Friday morning family craft also weekend and evening craft sessions. Please feel free to drop in to 2 Mackay Street or call 9175 1516. Thank you to all NNC patrons who utilise the facilities.

Meet Jay AhmediBy Sonya Matheson

Amongst our renewed and new Shire Council members is Jeton (Jay) Ahmedi. He was born in the Newman Hospital at a time before new mothers were encourage to go to larger locales. His father was driving haul trucks for over 30 years, retiring three years ago.

He and his two brothers went to Newman Primary School and then he progressed to Newman’s high school. He says of Newman that he “had the best childhood in this town and feel I am the person I am today because of the life this community offered me; acceptance, safety and family.”

His first ever job was at the old Chicken Treat in Newman spending his first pay cheque buying a ‘Savage Garden’ CD.

After graduation, he moved to Melbourne to study hospitality management. During his seven and a half years in Melbourne he met his wife, Naomi (known throughout town for her work in the community). In 2009, planning his move back to Newman to help with the family business, he asked Naomi, who he had been dating for less than a year, to join him. Six and a half years later they still reside in Newman.

“Having returned after so many years, it was no longer the quiet town with a population of 3000 people. It was the beginning of a mining boom and a very dynamic and diverse community. It was nice though to see so many familiar faces still residing in the town,” said Jay.

In addition to his new role as a Councillor for the Shire of East Pilbara, Jay is the Business Office Manager for the Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), which represents and supports local businesses. He is also a volunteer for some clubs in town and undertakes committee roles.

Jay has the support of his and Naomi’s family members living in Newman. They have adopted two S.A.F.E. rescue cats (Saving Animals from Euthanasia) and a dog, Milo. He says that “If it was up to my wife, we would have a farm living in our home.”

His hobbies include golf, soccer (Liverpool apparently!), cricket, football, movies and international travel with the objective of exploring more of Western Australia in the coming year.

Our Councillors, including Jay, welcome your suggestions and comments and are available at the Boulevard Shopping Centre on dates that will be announced soon.

The Pilbara Development Commission (PDC) aims to support sustainability in the Pilbara by investigating a broader economic base and improving social infrastructure attracting population growth.

The PDC’s Board visited Newman in October for their two-day meeting. They meet bi-monthly in different locations in the Pilbara to view progress and challenges.

The Board took a tour of Newman visiting investments and developments underway including the revitalisation of the town centre and the delayed completion of the East Pilbara Arts Centre. Both projects have been supported by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities programme administered by the PDC.

Mr Terry Hill, Acting CEO of the Commission said Newman is much more than just a mining town, it is a vibrant community were people are choosing to live and work.

“Newman is an important regional centre, and the developments and plans to revitalise and grow the town reflect this.

Small and medium businesses will play a key role in ensuring the town captures new opportunities for growth” Mr Hill said.

“The local communities within the region are pivotal to achieving a prosperous and sustainable future for the region, and working together is key to implementing and achieving all the objectives set out in the Blueprint” Mr Hill said.

The PDC’s website reports that the East Pilbara has a population of 11,950 of which 57.32% are eligible for the potential workforce. 16.01% are below the age of 15 and 1.56% are 65 years and older.

The PDC reports the population growth through the whole Pilbara region as being:41,009 in 200659,897 in 201167,503 in 2014

Golf for CharityThe Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) held a golf game for charity on 26 September. The game was held in the traditional Ambrose competition.

Forty-four players were in the competition and raised $2,400 to support the Newman St John Ambulance and the Newman Volunteer Fire Brigade. NCCI is looking at making this an annual event due to its great success.

This provided a great opportunity for organisations to undertake team building. NCCI holds regular monthly events to benefit business members through business support, advertisement, networking, information sharing and advocating on their behalf. For further information please contact them at [email protected] or 9175 0042.

This golf competition and funds raised would not have been possibly without generosity shown by Caltex Star Mart, Fortescue Golf Club, WA Fire and Rescue, Newman Bakery Takeaway, Newman Golf Club Whole Foods Café, St John Ambulance, Red Sands, Galvins Plumbing Supplies, Newman Hotel, Seasons Hotel and, of course, NCCI.

Meet Andrew PriceBy Sonya Matheson

If you have not already met Andrew Price around town, we hope you make his acquaintance.

Andrew moved to Newman in June 2009 with his lovely wife, Nano, and their dog Tom Yum, when he started work at the Newman Aquatic Centre. As Coordinator Aquatic Services he looks after the year-round activities at the pool.

He also volunteers with many sporting events in the community including fun runs, triathlons and the like. He has also dedicated his time as a St John Ambulance Volunteer for six years.

Andrew likes to keep fit with healthy lifestyle and is currently training for 14 day Everest base camp trek in April 2016.

This October, he chose to take part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer with the goal of riding 800 km.

His motivation is the fact that cancer is the largest killer disease of children in Australia. Three children die of cancer every week in Australia.

Andrew says of his 800 km cycling, “It will be tough, but it's nothing compared to what these kids face every day of their lives as they battle this terrible disease. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.”

He is putting a call out for sponsorship to raise funds that get donated to the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI), which was formed in 1988. They have since made strides into DNA diagnostics and are researching cancer inhibitors in order to kills cancer cells without harming healthy cells. Through a partnership, CMRI are also working on anti-cancer therapeutics with fewer side effects.

Greg Johnson from the Great Cycle Challenge said they raised $2.15 million in 2014. This year 8,700 cyclists are registered which is two thousand more than last year.

While the challenge officially ended on 31 October, the platform stays open for people to complete their challenge and raise further funds for this important research into childhood cancers.

If you are able to sponsor Andrew’s goal, please consider donating at this website where you can also track his progress.https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/AndrewPrice

Mitchell Outram, at 15 years of age, has had an extremely successful year in motocross. He won two state junior motocross titles and then went on to win the heavily contested 85cc class at the 2015 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championships in Bunbury.

Between April and September this year, Mitchell attended six rounds of motocross in Perth racing in both the 85cc and 125cc classes undertaking three races per class each time. This culminated in him becoming the 2015 WA State Junior Champion in both classes. This takes both intense physical and mental dedication. He attributes this partly to the support received by Yvain Agir from the Newman Boxing Club who directed his training programme throughout the year and to his mother’s lolly bag of sugar for energy.

Outram’s National Championship SuccessBy Sonya Matheson

At the end of September, Mitchell competed in the national championships over six days and was declared the 2015 National 85cc Champion in the 14-U16 class. He also placed an impressive seventh out of a field of 50 of Australia’s finest competitors in the 125cc class which included major Australian team riders who filled out the remaining top ten positions.

During the series, he drove the round trip from Newman to Perth each time. Well, his parents did. He claims to have slept much of the way. Despite all this travel, winning both of dual state and the national championship titles is an extremely rare feat.

Mitchell, having been racing competitively since he was seven years old, is already focussing on next year’s State and National competitions. After some well-earned rest he will return to the boxing gym and the local Newman motocross track in preparation.

Mitchell would like to thank the local support he received this season. Without them he would have been unable to secure these championships. Thanks to the Newman Boxing Club, Lend Lease Newman Operations, the Shire of East Pilbara, the Newman Motorcycle Club and, of course, his family and friends.
